AE94 Toyota Corolla 4AGE 20V Silvertop - Engine clicking sound

  • After completing this conversion and rectifying the idling issue, the engine constantly makes a clicking sound.. i have yet to work out what it is. but it doesn't seem to affect driving also a new engine side mount is needed as the car does vibrate quite a lot from the running motor. the current mount has around 270,000kms on it! other than that, the car is coming together slowly, i have installed some digital gauges in the meantime...

    I've worked at Toyota dealership for five years now and seen this issue more than once... What not to many people know of is that often it's repairable... You will need to remove the VVT gear, then disassemble the gear itself. Inside you will find a bushing/small cushion thats attached to the camshaft itself. The reason most get a DTC is because the cushion itself gets worn out. After the disassembling just turn the bushing 180 degree. The worn side is now pointing inwards, usually lasts for several years.

      thank you so much for sharing that, there are so many watching this video waiting for this response!

      I hope it will help! I've had this procedure done several times on friends and family's cars. Haven't failed yet (haven't at least until this day had any of the cars return with the same issue), and since a VVT gear is around 500€ it's worth the shot. If you/someone has already decided to remove the gear, the actual modification is not that hard.
      For obvious reasons we do NOT use this method to repair a customers car, and i doubt any Toyota dealership will... Just a tip to save some money for you Toyota enthusiasts out there unfortunate to stumble upon this issue.

    That sound is from the VVT pulley. When they wear out they make the engine sound like a diesel at idle. Very very common but fortunately doesn't affect driveability or performance. Not too much of a major to swap out for a new one but the pulley itself is quite expensive to buy brand new. Typically only makes that noise on idle, so for now I wouldn't worry about it, unless it starts driving you mad, lol. Make sure you keep your oil level topped up as the 20v's have a habit of burning through it.

  • @HRPMProjects
    @HRPMProjects  11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    cheers!! i really appreciate it. This is the first 4AGE in the family..
    but yeah i have noticed it does go through oil..i thought maybe piston rings..but as other and yourself have told me not to worry about it as it's normal..
    again much appreciated :)

  • @HRPMProjects
    @HRPMProjects  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    thats alright, sorry for late reply. you will need engine, gearbox, wiring loom and ECU. then the rest is pretty much installation. it is a great project and a great learning adventure, dont give up! good luck! :)

    1:34 the engine makes a pretty good beat

  • @Cordia4G63T
    @Cordia4G63T 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No worries mate :). Usually the cause of the oil usage is the valve stem seals. At 8,000rpm the amount of pressure through the engine is enough to force the oil past the worn seals, which gets burnt and comes out the exhaust. So you just have to keep an eye on the oil level or you'll run a big end bearing and be out of action completely. Changing to a thicker grade of oil (such as 20w-50) might help, but as long as you just keep an eye on the dipstick you'll be fine ;)

    It was like rocket taking off. anything after 3500rpm was fine save for the unholy tickkity tick noise roaring from under the hood (almost sounded like it was coming from under the car, really low down in the engine even though it's not) so long story short, if you are racing off dropping the clutch etc you really notice it unless your a real smooth driver etc but if it's just daily driving you'll be at your wit's end at the end of the working day. This was my experience with the BT 4age 20v

  • @rvgr12
    @rvgr12 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had this same setup. The clicking is there to stay. I can't quite remember what causes it but its something you've gotta live with. If memory serves me, something to do with the lifting of the pistons.... dont quote me

    • @HRPMProjects
      @HRPMProjects  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nah, the sound was definitely coming from the head. with these motors regular services is a must..this was the result of poor oiling of the VVT gear..still runs fine nonetheless(granted running decent oil in the motor)..just the annoying sound that goes with it.
