These ghosts are the 3 outriders knight that you can find in dark souls 3 (you fought one of them just before the first bonfire of the road of sacrifice) and also one of the boss that you will encounter later in the game (you can recognise her, she is more slender than the other and she walks with another ghost alongside her
I don't know if it's him, it can be because the description of his soul say that he was always near the dancer, but if it's him, one ghost is missing since there is 4 ghosts and 5 Irithyll minions across Lothric (including Vordt and the dancer)

yup @zman, when pontiff took over he forcefully made vordt and the dancer his outrider knights and with the rings he gave them to make them stronger they became mutated asf and became beastly monsters. The ice knights at the bottom of that tower where the giant is and the one in lothric and the grand archives are slightly less mutated outrider knights. Theres a lot more lore to it thats just the basics.
Probably one of my favorite areas in the game. After the relatively easy Catacombs, you walk down the street into Magic Christmas Land and the game's like, "Okay. We're not fucking around anymore."

dude...some suggestions: 1) swap to a faster weapon. Straight swords are there for a reason: that being pve...Estoc is also a decent choice. 2) level up some: faron keep bonfire, kill the 3 mobs on the bridge, rest, repeat. if you've done smoldering lake; kings antechamber bonfire, kill the mini demon thing, rest, repeat. 3) if you're not gonna parry, swap to a great shield, or a medium shield with weaponskill (stone parma, silver kite, shield of want) 4) weapon upgrades, man. weapon upgrades...and infusions. 5) slumbering dragoncrest ring is your friend in pve 6) no aimable ranged weapon? divide and conquer, my dude. divide, and conquer. 7) block! weaker enemies will have their attack rebounded, giving an opening. 8) enemies have pretty much infinite stamina 9) rage??? 10) profit

There are 3 of them, 1 of them I don't know the identity of, 1 of them is Vordt of the Boreal Valley, and the last one is the Dancer of the Boreal Valley. Before being an outrider knight, the Dancer was, well, Pontiff's dancer. Vordt was an ordinary man as far as I know, but the affects of Pontiff's eye's(left and right are collectible items) sent him mad with power. That is the story of those ghost knights, and no, you can't interact with them. Also- "Makin' my way up these stairs, lookin' nice", I died!
The two ghosts are The Dancer of the Boreal Valley and Vordt of the Boreal Valley. They were friends/lovers and were never far from each other in life. The ghost form is what they looked like after they became Outrider Knights but before Pontiff Sulivan corrupted them with the abbyss and turned them into beasts.

FireBird58 in my first play through I didn't even know cathedral of the deep existed, I went straight to abyss watchers and then irithyll but got stuck at the bridge

Those Pontiff Knights and Fire Witches done straight up rekt your ass. I can't complain, though. That gauntlet run to the Church from Central Iyrthil can be a challenge.

Bit late but those "shadows" are the souls of vordt and the dancer before they get transformed by pontiff. Sure other people knew this already but since you asked thought I'd post anyways

Nope, died about 23 times to the Pontiff Knights before finally beating them, then I saw there were more. That's when I booked it.
I still do it on every playthrough. Much easier to work backwards from that bonfire if you want the items
