My father was a programmer in the 80s. When I was a kid I used to go to his office sometimes, and sit under the greenish monochrome monitors glow, revel in the ambient electronics smell in the air, look at my father code and think "This. I want to do this." And thus, I became a programmer. I'm 47 and my own teenage son is now learning to code, I couldn't be prouder, even if the world has changed with everyone working from home, and with the rise of AI-assisted programming. I still miss the old 80286 days.
I enjoyed reading your story
your story is so amazing,
A career that will last to the third generation in this family。
@@HIEHIMIKO Im a traditional woodworker, its funny for me to think about a third generation of programmer, like a trade being passed down. My father was an early programmer he worked on Dbase 3+ , but alas I inherited none of that ability.
It jobs are heavily overrated. They are a big source of stress and they lead to a fast burnout.

imagine it's like October, 1988, and you're working an overtime night shift all alone in the office in this video, saving up to get your kid an NES for Christmas
To everyone who's studying with this music:
Checklist:
• A bottle of water, at least 1liter. Your brain works better if it has enough water and drinking helps you to concentrate
• Your charger. You sometimes don't even notice that your device's battery is going down, so better have it plugged in all the time
• Your headphones. You will be able to focus more with headphones, because it blocks background noises. Also, if it's a late night study session, you won't wake up anyone
• a tea or coffee. Coffee keeps you awake, green or black tea can make you feel more awake as well.
• Your study/work stuff: your laptop/tablet/phone , a few pens, paper or whatever you need.
•Anything else you could need, what about a heat pad, a blanket, a good lamp, your pet so you have a study buddy
Reminder:After an hour, you should stand up and walk a bit around. Better stop the music or put on different music for the break. Open your window, even if it's cold outside. Fresh air will make it better, trust me.
You could also lay your head down on your desk for ten minutes and listen to a podcast. Or, if you have to read a book, listen to the audiobook of it. You can also listen to the audiobook while doing another thing, that's even better than listening to music while reading the book.
I hope y'all had a good day, if not, that's okay too.
Remember to take care of yourself and try to get some sleep tonight
My mother started her sales/pre-sales job back in 1989 in a office exactly like this. She is now approaching her retirement age but when she shows me some photos of that period she is always a bit melancholic and nostalgic. The last five or so years she has been working exclusively from home meaning that her new colleagues are all split in three different countries and multiple timezone, she does not know a single one of them and her new "boss" is a computer software who does not care nor understand human feelings. For my mom, her office meant everything. She met her best friends there, it allowed her to meet my father, she had the opportunity to met many people, to travel and even to go abroad. And after all these years and all these memories, she's now confined in a room, completely alone for most part of her day. I wonder what would have happened if she were to start her career in today's work environment...
It’s clearly a different world now
Her "boss" is a computer software? That's kind of...dystopian. Has it been that way since Covid?
@@ryanlak1234 I mean, obviously she has a supervisor like everyone else, but most of her work is done without human interaction. A software assigns her a task and then evaluates the result.
Thank you for sharing this very thoughtful story. I wish your mother well, writing this on Mother's Day 2024.
Back in those days people had negative views of office work(Office Space, The Matrix) I think we look back at this time with rose tinted glasses, as well there were definitely a lot of pros over what we have today. People are more connected and also more disconnected. I miss the pre social media world too.
This is what the 80’s felt like. Very dreamy. I miss it soo much.
Two computers at one desk? This is unrestrained opulence
Its an Ai image.

@@DreamStation33 This model has a surprisingly good concept of what a DOS app looks like! Can I ask what you used?
@@mortenjorck Thanks a lot !! I did it with Focus. It's an opensource visual AI completly free. It's quite good tbh

That graphic looks like the office of my first programming job, 1987. I had to go through stacks of line printer green bar with COBOL (IBM/ANSI) and JCL and document code because veteran programmers coded and didn't document anything, so nobody knew where bugs were. I used a WANG word processor to document where I thought bugs were, (Page 23, "bug"). I really disliked the job and left. I ended up working for a defense contractor next coding PASCAL and not like that either. I eventually ended up working as a 3D artist and returned to coding when the WWW was invented. I drove a 1986 Pontiac Fiero. Nope, I don't miss any of it. I'm much happier today. :)
I'm sitting in my hotel room far away from home in Hong Kong about to go to work. I'm looking out my window at one of the many skylines and this ambient music is hitting just right.
Love the vibes. I used to spend time in my dad's office back then, when he would go to work on Saturday sometimes. I would operate the paper shredder in the supply room, shredding their massive backlog of documents, which would be in massive piles (a lot more paperwork in those days). Simple but happy memories.
We all miss old days I guess, really glad you like the vibes
My brain feels cleaner.
❤️
This is the perfect way to describe this sensation
this is how it feels staying at the office on a rainy friday at 6 pm
Somehow it is consistently nicer than most of the other parts of the week.
@@apedreus rainy friday will never not be nice
I worked in an old building in the 2000s. Much of the 80s was still there: the furniture, computers, dull florescent lights, padded walls and hallways that had a faint smell of cigarette. Just being there gave me a sense of calm that I don't feel in today's modern buildings. I was born in the 80s, grew up in the 90s. From time to time I get this overwhelming yearning for the past. It's comforting to know that I am not the only one who gets this way. I wonder if I will feel this way about this present time?
I can smell this office, the stall air, smell of lingering perfume and cologne, if they were present it would be intense now we are left with ghost scent. The green glow off the computer screen setting the mood. The sound of the water cooler bubbling up. And the ghost workers getting ready for their coffee break the smell coffee burns my nose. The chit chat in the office of workers going vacation, getting married, having child, retirement, people living in the moment and unaware of future. Shadows play on the walls, workers just sliding through the daydream world just passing the time wish they were some else, wondering if what they do is meaningless, wishing for the next adventure, not realizing this is a dream and the next adventure waits soon, just not the form they expect but it feels like forever. Ghost of another time, of all time. We're moving though time, just ghosts of another time.
This makes me nostalgic for a workplace I am too young to have ever experienced.
Stop it lol. I'm sitting in my cubical right now. Trust me, it's pretty much the same and it ain't that great. Just be happy wherever you are. 😀
Reality: no music whatsoever, telephones ringing nonstop, and people you loathe swinging by unannounced for a 15-20 min “chat”
It sucked. Not that workplaces don't suck now.
It was kind of a cool time, when computers were still new and thrilling. Stick that flopping disc in there and play black & white pong.
Indeed and this was before the arrival of the Lunbergs.
This office space would have been right at home in the Twin Towers since the 1980s were when the World Trade Center was at its prime, before the bombing of the parking garage of 1993. Everything about the aesthetic fits perfectly, allowing for ambiguity as to whether this space would have been in the North Tower or the South Tower, as well as whether the space could have been on the fifth floor just above the lobby or near the top on the 100th floor.
If you ever get the chance to visit Canberra, the capital city of Australia, be sure to visit the Museum of Democracy at Old Parliament House. Its set up as a museum and a large section has been kept to look EXACTLY as it was on the day when parliament moved to their new building in 1987. So you can walk through all the minister's and staff offices, and they all look EXACTLY like this picture. Its like walking through a time capsule.
Thank you so much for this recommendation, I'll be in Canberra next month, and hopefully will have the time to make that trip.
There is something about this type of melodies, synth suspended notes slowly turning their pitch, that makes it feels like an ethereal state, a lighter existence. Something between a sound mantra or mental frequency. So relaxing and mind opener.
Thank you so much it’s really nice to hear
Amazing to see all these warmhearted reactions to this imo really desolate office space on the picture.
We’re all over stimulated and nostalgic for simpler times. Can’t let go of technology but can’t stand it run amok either. Super weird place to be in mentally.
I have no story to tell, but i like the photo
We’re just glad you’re here with us, friend.
This picture captures what offices looked like in the 80s. This sounds like Ambient Music. Spacey and dreamy. Beautiful!
When I first entered the world of work - right at the end of the 1980's, so not too far removed from this - this is pretty much what "modern" offices looked like. And this would have been a very opulent office in 1983 with IBMs on every desk. The thing at the extreme left looks to be something like a Wise or Fortune terminal. It was common back then to have an office with 8 or 10 desks for people to work at and a single PC shared that they jumped on to use on a desk off to the side. And a printer that sounded like an airstrike when you used it.
I am sober but I feel like I have taken a giant dose of mesmerise central.
My father was an electrical engineer, and in 1983 me and me brother both had home computers, him an Apple II and me a TI 99/4a. The following year we got a TI 8088 Professional Computer. I remember riding mopeds and Journey and Def Leppard on the radio, building rubber band power airplanes and lying model rockets and later RC controlled airplanes. We had a houseful of cats and I had a parakeet named Magoo.
Typing my paper in Vim for even more of that 80s aesthetic
🙏🙏🙏
it's sat night, i'm on unreal building out an enviornment.. this is just hitting the vibe
10 years before i was born. Strange world
5 yrs before me. Still...strangely nostalgic to the eardrums, ain't it
Prime timing to be exposed to a lot of the 80s culture in media
born in 1985 . My dad brought a PC from its office when I was 4. I was amazed. Now I'm a software developer that went from dos programming in turbo pascal till C++/C# now days
Makes me think I was born too late. The 80s where such a vibe. On the other hand, I'm happy to have grown up to be the man I am today. I may not have the highest paying job or have the house with 2.5 kids. But I am my own man. I pay my own bills, I have my own beliefs, I pursue my passions without the worry of fame or fortune. It's my life and I wouldn't trade it for the world
well said brother, stay true to yourself
I'm 34 and I've worked in several offices like this now. I've had both good and bad experiences, but it all depends on the people in the other cubes. It's the human connection that makes me feel nostalgic for this kind of workplace, even though I mostly work from home now and I love it. I DO miss creating little communities with my cube neighbors and making some of the best workplace friends I've ever known in offices exactly like this.
This music and picture make me nostalgic.
Great colour scheme,1989 I was on the road building mobile telephone networks happy days!
Oh I remember that day, it was a long wait for some documents and out of boredom my colleagues Nancy and Jim started dancing to some chill tunes, I joined them and so did our supervisor. We had the work done and a lot of fun.
04: 38 unlimited dreams corporation track is insanely good, with faster and faster beat towards the end-ascent!✈🚀🛰🛸
Beautiful. Really relaxing. Thanks for this!
I was a student at Northwestern Michigan College in 1983. The desktop computer, as depicted here did not exist. At least in my neck of the woods
Now I will play Elite Dangerous to this music
Thanks
love studying while pretending its 1983
Happy you like it ❤️
1983 when uneducated people could open a 30 x 30 tiny candy store selling candies for pennies and become a millionaire... the elites stopped that by increasing globalization and massive immigration so by the end of the 90s we had a self inflicted world wide recession and the dream of the middle class was over. That 12 year period of wealth will never be allowed to happen again. My grandfather who was a migrant came to north america and in the late 70's and 80's with no education open a tiny bakery where no more than 5 people could enter at a time and he was able to buy 2 cars, a house and a condo in florida with a dedicated car there and a country house while having 4 children. A dream that is impossible today.

Most businesses didn’t have a computer at every desk like this in 1983. I remember there was one computer in the operations department of a bank and that was in 1987.
Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe the department head would have his own computer. Everyone else would be lucky to have a dumb terminal. Most likely they would still have typewriters
this is more calming than some of the other computerized music in 1983 ..... PacMan

Hmm 1973 baby here, and in 1983 I think an office would have phones, file cabinets, rolodexes, pens and paper, and electronic typewriters. Big dot printers that were loud and slow. There were no operating systems, if we wanted to use a computer, we would have to type out DOS commands with BASIC. I had a class in 6th grade called 'Computeronics'. We didn't really use computers for much, even at the bank, we had a punch card system for our accounts. And Apple products weren't really known or cared about too much until I was in my early 20's. It was all IBM or Microsoft.
Okay ! That’s really interesting. Thanks for sharing all this precious info

How I long for a proper walls around my desk - nobody would bug me constantly
That’s always the funny part when I discuss with other senior leaders why no one wants to come back into the office. “Back in my day, we were in the office five days a week.” Yeah, Alan, what was your office like back then? Did you have walls? A door? Must have been nice. Because all you’re giving my org are a bunch of tables in the middle of a loud ass office floor in the name of “collaboration” and you want to know why people don’t want to come in? Have YOU tried working in that environment? I don’t know, just something about the disconnect of leaders that came up in the 70s and 80s vs those who came up in the 90s and 2000s. It’s like the old guard has zero concept about what they’ve done to office culture and workspaces.

True. It's more like a 1990-1995 workplace.
Some offices had colour monitors but no browsers.
(Netscape launched in 1994.)
At the time, many computers still worked with straight white, green, or gold text-only.
IBM CGA (Color Graphics Adapter) is from 1981.
@@YaroslavFedevych Truth. It wasn't all that great: but it did exist, and it did sell. I doubt if businesses would spring for it, though: it wasn't particularly cheap in the 80s.
