I lost $20 out of pure confusion and he was obviously trying to take advantage of my elderly grandfather who was with me, telling me to keep going because my grandfather was pulling out his wallet. I shut it down there and we walked out with a tiny prize. fuck em.
I always thought it was strange that the state fair every year has a section dedicated to scamming people out of their money with carnival games. Like your supposed to bring your family and loved ones to have fun, and then there is just this group of demons robbing people in the corner
People like playing them even if they know they are obviously scams. Lottery and all sorts of gambles are legal and I imagine winning those is about as slim as it is for you to throw a ball through a hoop or whatever else.
Because they buy in bulk, we're talking like less than $1 per stuffed animal. I've known people who buy toys from similar vendors and sell them at flea markets
I was actually thinking this, even if he's mastered their rigged games he's still giving them money, even if they're getting less money than usual since he's not wasting money by losing and giving the stuffed animals to people who would lose so they don't waste their own money, the carnival is still profiting off the difference between the cost of each animal and price of the games
God carnival scams are the worst. I remember when I was like 9 I made my dad spend 30 dollars just to win me a small little dog plush I still have it somewhere and honestly respect to him for wasting that much money on me lol Edit: these spam comments are scaring me
Honestly had the same thing happen to me years ago. Worked an all-cash job, stopped at a carnival one weekend (same shady thing in a mall parking lot). It was like plinko-style game - prizes were xbox 360 and PS3... same thing happens, double the payment but double the prize you'd be stupid not to keep doing it. Learned to just walk away from those games. It triggered my competitiveness as a gamer, and they know it. I think they got me for a bit more than you... it was a good life lesson for a pretty low overall cost. Makes me keep a real sharp eye out for scams nowadays and got me into helping family and volunteering to educate others.
The moment he starts talking about the guy showing him he can toss the ball in easy, I was immediately thinking "he's using a different ball" and I'm glad I wasn't disappointed.

@@urmum2051 he's being intentionally controversial to farm interactions and generate account activity to spur him into the algorithms good graces. When I go to amusement parks, I go straight to the prize winning games and win the big stuffed animals, then I find a family with only one child and give a couple of them to the kid. That way the parents have to carry that shit around for the kid ALL DAMN DAY.
I feel Charlie when he talks about how every kid should get scammed. I used to be big into TF2 when I was a kid, and I saw there was like an 18% chance to unbox a 20$ part from a crate, so I spent like 30$ trying to get it. I didn't get it. The disappointment from it has pretty much turned me off of any gambling since, because the odds are never as good as they seem.
i spent 20 on unboxing for the first time and got a 400 dollar unusual. It's all luck. you win some you lose some, i spent all of that money on crates after selling the unusual and got nothing
Now I just want to say something to most people 30 euro for tf2 seems a lot but it’s almost nothing. A crate costs like 10. Cent at max. But a key used to cost 3 euros if you managed to scam a guy. At max hé coudve unboxed 10 crates. And that woudve been if he was super fuckin good with money
He isn’t afraid to share anything embarrassed and I think that makes him an awesome role model. We’re all just humans and we do weird things and make tons of mistakes.
This is a form of gambling addiction. I myself deal with it as a poker player. Chasing loses, believing the problem is you and that you are just one or two adjustments away from being a winning player, impulse control issues, going back to the ATM, pushing thru bets even when your friends beg you not to, etc. Charlie, if you happen to see this, just keep this in mind so you don't fall into these type of habits like I did. Care about you mane.
“Too good to be true” is absolutely a thing to be considered. If that carnival ever actually let someone walk away with a prize without spending anything, they wouldn’t have a business. Any offer given to you which wouldn’t be financially advantageous for the person making the offer is 100% a scam every time
@@chippy3901 well, it's a common practice to have a fake winner walks around in the carnival to make you feel like you could actually win. And there's people like Charlie here who trained to actually beat the games
I fucking love you Charlie, you are a damn legend and such a kind person. Learning from your mistakes, informing others so they can learn too, and going out of your way to master the games just to fuck them over and give away the prizes. Good on ya
Ugh this story hurt my soul cause the same thing happened to my husband and I at a festival. Everything you said was so on point. When I think about those guys I just feel so icky.
Biggest scam I fell for was one of those "Stacker" arcade machines. It pretends to be an actual game where you can stack the pixel blocks and win, but they literally have it programmed to make you lose 99.9% of the time even after you've gotten the correct timing to line them up. They lure you in with big prizes like an entire game console, and they give no indication that it's actually a luck-based gambling machine. I spent $80 and had to pay my parents back with my allowance for weeks. The people behind that machine should be in prison.
I used to do that as a kid. Probably spent about 20$ which at the time might as well have been 1,000$ cuz I was like 10 years old with no ways to achieve money in the first place. I would always think “well even if I loose 45 times, I still win cuz I can win a 50$ gift card” Never won it obviously. Fuck that game.
@@emilydavis9548 haha… no. Even if they were free ENTIRELY free To make.. there’s no way they could ship the volume those teddy bears take up for 10 dollars.
As an adult, I instantly knew it was the ball. I would have asked him if I could try it with the ball that he used. Then again, I have watched Mark Rober's video about carnivals so I'm more aware now when it comes to carnival games.
I won this exact game as a child by completely accidentally by hitting the backboard and bouncing the ball perfectly off the edge of the counter at the front and into the basket. Probably shouldn’t have got the prize for that but I was a child in a wheelchair at the time and they gave me the giant Patrick from spongebob
“$20 for 10 balls” Considering it was 3 throws for $5, that would have normally been 12 throws for $20… instant red flag that I would have noticed if I were oblivious somehow before then, yikes.
this is literaly what happened to me and my dad at Europa-Park. super charismatic dude who showed us that its possible to throw the ball in the basket. we did the game like three times but after that my dad was smart enough to realize that it was a scam.

I was scammed on the street in a city before. Like you said getting scammed will open your eyes and you'll probably learn a lesson from it. Without going into too much detail I got scammed 50 bucks. Nothing illegal or sketchy. My gut instinct was telling me no, but at the time I was just bad at saying no. Will always go with my gut instinct now.
This is true, and sad. But the good part is that he can limit their income, but at the same time.. I doubt a carnie is going to let you clean them out of bait.
The joke is on the scammer. He's probably still scamming people and probably earning quite a bit of money, but nothing compared to what Charlie makes legitimately.
@@Tjobs1 yeah maybe not but think about this. Charlie might have made more money off just this story IN the video from YT than all the scammer took from him 😭
My mother had a friend in the 1970s that went completely insane over this game, even built a recreation of the carnival game in his backyard. After a year he arrived at the carnival, went to that game, and still lost. Why? Because its rigged, what people don't understand is the carnival has existed hundreds of years and carnival games have evolved ever since. A prime example of an early carnival trick is the gunslinger trick, basically have an experienced target shooter come from behind the woodwork. Maybe dressed like a poor farmer, and then have them take a try at the shootout game. To everyone else their performing average, to the target shooter he's having a hard time because the game is rigged against him. The target shooter, doesn't care simply because he was paid off. This attracts several on lookers to join in and likely lose a days pay trying to impress someone.
I love how every time, Charlie always says "So thats about it. See ya." in the same tone every time the video ends. Like, this is so recognisable for me.
Good on you for telling us this emberasing story from your youth. We all have done embarrassing shit like this and it's good to tell people about it so they don't feel so alone.

...Definition? You mean example.
In a strict grammatical sense it is obviously incorrect but you gotta remember the context associated with the language game.
I'm exaggerating my point by labeling this the quintessence of the sunk-cost fallacy.
Fun fact: The carnivals never lost money by giving this stuffed animals. The stuffed animals are cheaper than you think.
How cheap?
Because they buy in bulk, we're talking like less than $1 per stuffed animal. I've known people who buy toys from similar vendors and sell them at flea markets
yeah which is why theres almost never high quality or licensed ones
I was actually thinking this, even if he's mastered their rigged games he's still giving them money, even if they're getting less money than usual since he's not wasting money by losing and giving the stuffed animals to people who would lose so they don't waste their own money, the carnival is still profiting off the difference between the cost of each animal and price of the games
yeah it's all really just one big scam and i question the legallity of some of it
God carnival scams are the worst. I remember when I was like 9 I made my dad spend 30 dollars just to win me a small little dog plush
I still have it somewhere and honestly respect to him for wasting that much money on me lol

And I thought spending $10 on those types of games was awful…I couldn’t even compete with whatever brain chemistry charlie had going on

I didn't get it. The disappointment from it has pretty much turned me off of any gambling since, because the odds are never as good as they seem.

This is a form of gambling addiction. I myself deal with it as a poker player. The people behind that machine should be in prison.
only scam I love is claw machines, if you go later at night after the moneys built up, you win first try😏

I won this exact game as a child by completely accidentally by hitting the backboard and bouncing the ball perfectly off the edge of the counter at the front and into the basket.
