    Interesting that IRL Sully said the difference from the movie is that the panel was actually very helpful and willing to work with the captain to find out what happened. They weren't as antagonistic as they show in the movie

      I figured that was artistic license. Couldn’t imagine there being this kind of angry inquisition into the man who saved 155 people in a catastrophic situation

      I know films take artistic license but when you're dealing with something like this, I think it's garbage. Tell the story like it is. They villainized the panel at the hearings, for the sake of drama. Landing a plane on water with 155 people on board is drama enough. It needs no extra flare.

      @@vincentcappello4746 that's the fine line between documentary and a movie. This is a basically a fictional work that inspired from true event, not the carbon copy of the event. Never take a movie as a fact or source of the truth. Never.

    I love how the Teterborough pilot pulled the throttle to idle and pulled the reverses after she’d just crashed into a building. That’s muscle memory at its best.

      Can you explain this? I'm not as mechanically smart as you so why is it muscle memory to pull the throttle to idle?

    • @jeffrowisdabest
      @jeffrowisdabest 2 ปีที่แล้ว +205

      @@superltwins Sure. After a plane touches down, they shift the throttle to idle and then reverse the engines (so if the plane was sitting still, it would start going backwards) in order to slow the plane down.

    • @iwxracer
      @iwxracer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      @@jeffrowisdabest just wanna correct one minor thing. The engine isn't reversed, the thrust is reverse by redirecting it through flaps. The engine is always spinning in the same direction.

    • @katiemolloy9073
      @katiemolloy9073 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@superltwins airplane engines aren’t like car engines where if you stop telling it to produce power it’ll immediately shut off. When coming in for a regular landing, pilots will reduce the thrust to idle (not off) so they won’t be speeding down the runway as if they were about to take off again, so they gain a muscle memory from doing this on every landing.
      While the engines are slowing down to idle, they’re still producing a forward acceleration vector, so that’s why they use reversers to redirect the direction of it and help slow the plane down even more

      @@johnspence8141 That is not correct. There was an investigation. The NTSB is required to do so with all crashes. And the NTSB DID run simulations checking if they could have made it back to the airport: First with immediate turning, which only generated a 50% success rate to each. Then inserting the 35 second reaction time, which had a 100% failure rate. So there is historical fact in this scene.

      Except this didn't happen in real life. The NTSB ran simulations and only 7 or 13 attempts to LaGuardia resulted in suceess and only then just barely. The NTSB also concluded themselves that the simulations weren't realistic in that the turnbacks were instant instead of after normal decision making. There was never a question both engines had failed, and the NTSB praised the flight crew's handling of the situation.
      The film was directed by Clint Eastwood who is no fan of the Federal government, one has to think much of the NTSB's portrayal is coming from him. In fact Captain Sullenberger was disturbed by the portrayal he asked to have the investigators real names removed from the characters as he thought it wasn't fair to associate them with the fictionalized tribunal at the end.

      Yea, those full cat D simulators are great, but once they hit the ground, the simulation basically becomes meaningless since it can't simulate the physics of solid object shear and stuff. The idea is that once you crash, you reset all the controls to neutrals/idles so when the simulation is reset, you don't go bounding off down the (simulated) runway again with nobody at the controls.

Hollywood does not know how to make a movie without a protagonist V antagaonist aspect. Who better to serve as the villian than a bunch of bureaucrats!
    The NTSB still had procedure to follow and a report to make, the actual report stated what everyone allready knew. You do not land a plane on the Hudson without fatalities unless the pilot has some sort of unimagineable next level savage skills. The biggest piece of information we have of how effing insane a feat this was is that maticulously scrutinized and detailed report from the NTSB.

    In an emergency crisis situation like this 35 seconds is like a blink even with someone who isn't panicked is acting calm trying to assess the situation and make calculations there is a million things that cross your mind. Even in this simulation when they are just sitting there for 35 seconds doing nothing they are not communicating there is no fear no second guessing no analysis of actions no collaboration with the pilots no standard checklist of procedures after a crash or bird strike like that nothing makes it seem like they had all the time in the world sitting there doing absolutely nothing for 35 seconds and they still crash....how many people would have died with those other pilots in the simulation everyone?

    i always felt bad for the way the investigators were portrayed in this movie.
    they were not "out to get him" the way it is (somewhat) implied here.
    their job is to apply as much scrutiny as humanly possible, and then some more.
    not factoring in the "human factor" was an oversight, not some "gotcha" tactic. the only way to determine if you made the right decision is to compare you to the "perfect" decision and see how you stack up.
    Im also willing to bet they applied a bit more pressure than they normally would have due to the fact that sully was being hailed as a hero. they didn't want to compromise the investigation "and their reputations" by looking like they were going easy on him just because it all worked out.
    water landings are incredibly dangerous. his decision could have cost everyone their lives just as fast as trying to make it to the airport.
    if his wing had dipped a few degrees or his speed had been a few knots slower/faster. Therefore it is imperative that the investigation determine if it was the ABSOLUTE best possible decision. the next pilot who tries may not be as lucky, and should be aware if there could be better alternatives.
    I suppose if you want to make a movie about an aviation investigation interesting to any audience, you need to ramp up the drama and tensions a bit. gotta have someone to root for and to root against.

      Please separate the movie from reality in your brain. In reality, the investigators applauded him for his extraordinary actions almost immediately. For the movie, they just invented a bunch of extra drama, tension, arguing and bullshit to make it more interesting/dramatic. So yea, when discussing this, keep the movie discussion to the movie and reality to reality. They're separate. Dramatized events loosely based on a true story is fine, but people talk about it like the movie happened in reality, lol. You should think of them in your head as two different stories.

    We should ban airplanes. Think of the birds that perished for no reason.

    Why do they still manage thrust if both engines were out?

      With both engines gone .. .there is no thrust. They glide on air. It's called aeronautics. Welcome.

      It's because of how the simulator works. The settings can simulate engine shutdown but the lever has to be pushed so that the sim keeps going. And once they crashed the lever is returned to idle to stop the simulation

    • @vancemccarthy2554
      @vancemccarthy2554 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The simulation should know that the plane can't pull up if the engines aren't working.

    I love the woop woop pull up. I heard a pilot say he made it his alarm clock for his iPhone. wakes him up right away! it's interesting how some noises and things can wake you up right away.
    I drove into nyc for long trips often and when you drive into Manhattan from the GWB the 178th street i95 tunnel I used to describe as a human car wash 😅 the lights used to wake me up from a groggy autopilot roadtrip into city driving hyper alert semi aggressive mode.

    my only complain is that Clint Eastwood tried to make the NTSB the bad guy. Sullenberg was actually disturbed on how the NTSB investigators were portrayed. In a hyper politicized enviroment such as the US, it comes as no surprised that Eastwood a outspoken republican tried to tarnish the federal government (democrat at the time). I cant watch any Eastwood movies anymore without thinking of his politics first, he's so obvious about it.
    The last movie Eastwood wasnt so political minded was the Million Dollar Baby.

    Just the fact it took 17 tries to land properly shows sully was the only one who could have done it and every pilot should have known that.

    There are critic's, spectators, and then, the man in the arena.
    He had 1 shot, and hit it when it mattered.
    Hero.
