    I remember watching an analysis of this landing, had Sully hit the water at any other speed or angle it would have been catastrophic. He hit the water perfectly, nose further down, dig in and break apart, nose further up, break apart, faster, slower, break apart. This was the right pilot, in the right plane, at the right time, place, the right everything. Had he attempted to land at either airport, crash. If there ever was a perfect crash... this was it. A million possible scenarios and one where everyone lived.

    • @wolfbyte3171
      @wolfbyte3171 4 ปีที่แล้ว +505

      Almost perfect. The Airbus' computer would not allow Sullenberger to fully flare the aircraft before touchdown, which made the initial impact harder, probably causing the hole in the fuselage. Sully did the best he could, and everything went about as well as it could have.

    • @Erin-Thor
      @Erin-Thor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +310

      wolfbyte3171 - I’m not a pilot, I just remember watching some “experts” run computer simulations on a news or 60 minutes type of show. They modified the speed +/-, angles (nose more upward/downward, and side angle w tail L/R of center, and turn angle left/right wing higher than the other), and variations of them, every example showed simulated crashes where the plane broke up in all instances save one. All I’m saying is that Sully’s training and experience, his ‘feel’ for the aircraft, all worked in concert for one of the best possible outcomes. Did he scratch, damage, buckle, fold spindle or mutilate the underside of the aircraft? Maybe, so? LMAO! Still an excellent landing, IMHO.

    I like how they show Aaron's face in a close-up for just a second or so when Tom says that they may end up in the Hudson. Aaron's moment of realization that these moments might be his last but he's gotta do what he's gotta do. That jump back from emotions to reality is shown well in the editing.

      @hansenfiet2539 For the record (into how egregiously inaccurate the movie's NTSB portrayal was), in the 1549 episode of Mayday/Air Disasters, the real woman Anna Gunn's character is based on - who is so effusively pro-Sully that it might make Mrs. Sullenberger uncomfortable - states that instantly going for the APU was the single most brilliant thing he did.

    • @anb7408
      @anb7408 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Don’ forget that starting that APU was wayyyyyy down on the checklist that Skiles grabbed and subsequently had no time to read through. I love the guy who plays Jeff Skiles, because he did a bang-up job of portraying someone who works well with Sully and trusts him completely. When Sully says "We may end up in the Hudson", Skiles looks concerned and shocked, but doesn't protest or question it. He just goes back to the checklist, calm as can be.
    Also, I feel like Jeff Skiles himself deserves a lot of recognition as well. I just looked him up. Like Sully, he was really experienced - he'd logged 15,643 career flight hours, not far from Sully's 19,663. But this was his first time flying an Airbus A320 since qualifying to fly it (by contrast, Sully had flown 4,765 hours in an A320).

    I used to work for US Airways in the 2000s. When I see this movie, I am crying because it is so realistic. The interiors, the air footage. The movie hijacks my memories. Any US Air employee from that era would feel the same way. A disaster scenario was always in the back of our mind, as employees, even though the airline was run safely. We took the safety of customers seriously. They still do at AA. It’s more than a job, there are moral obligations in it, that’s why this movie gets me every time. Bless Sully and Skiles and the FAs.

      No one did consider him anything other than a hero. The portrayal of the NTSB Board here - is pure Hollywood Bull Shit. The real drama - was over in a few minutes - but the people making the movie had to stretch it out to like 90 minutes. So they created this bull shit where the NTSB is trying to hang the air crew. Sullenberger did not like this part of the movie.
      Basically - the NTSB had to investigate the crash and determine what happened - but - they loved these two guys. Because of the air crew's competence - the NTSB was having a nice calm session with two living people instead of looking at over a hundred corpses. The NTSB board - who had probably seen more corpses than they ever wanted to - just loved these guys. Of all the people in the world - the NTSB Board realized more than anyone else - just what heroes these guys really were.
      So - the real hearing was - *_NOTHING_* - like this.

No racism, no color, no age was important. Everyone there was willing to do their best to help others and it was a beautiful site to see.👍🏽🇺🇸

    To me, the ending of this scene (that unfortunately isn't shown here or in part 4) where Scully asks to be excused for a moment after reliving this experience, is one of the best parts of the movie. Can you imagine how you'd feel after hearing this again?

    • @gregmead2967
      @gregmead2967 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @H0T-Vlog Go to My Channel I've heard that as well. It's a dramatization for the movie, but if I worked at NTSB, I'd be annoyed at the characterization.

      @Joan 23 y.o - check my vidéó We'll never know for sure, but these guys have LOTS of confidence, otherwise they wouldn't be in that position. And most people don't want to rely on someone else for their survival, which is why so many people don't like to fly.
      If you asked the co-pilot if he thought he could have landed safely, I'm sure he'd have answered "sure". It was the hierarchy of the situation. Sully had command, therefore he's the one who landed the plane.
