The trip meter let's you know how far you've gone since the last time you reset it. It's great for knowing the distance you've gone on a trip so you don't have to calculate it. Some need to use their motorcycle for for business and it's a quick way of recording your distance for taxes.

I had it all sorted when I picked it up and knew how to use it better than the dealer when he went to show me. You’re buying a bike with the latest tech, if you want no tech there’s KLR’s and DR650’s for that or the earlier AT’s or Tenere 700’s. That’s right. If you like a certain mode, like tour, but just want a different suspension setting, I would look to see what everything is set at, get it close, then adjust the suspension. 100% right about back lighting the buttons. Honda really failed on that. I wonder if HSTC (traction control, or as Honda calls it, Honda Selectable Torque control) was set to the most intervening level when you test rode it. It’s a bike that I love, but it’s unnecessarily complex.

It really depends on what display mode you are using (Gold, Silver, or Bronze). Preload can be adjusted while using the gold display mode on the left side below the rider mode. There are different display option here (1, 2, 3, and 4). Click on 4 and you can see the preload option (4th one down).
This is if you made no changes to the Gold display. If you accidentally removed it, you can add it back by clicking Settings>Display Mode
Then making the appropriate adjustment here.
You can also adjust preload with greater refinement on the two rider defined user modes. Settings>Function>User Modes
Damping is the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th option. Preload settings are the last four options.

If you’re a bike reviewer and need something to complain about then sure stopping every 2 seconds to setup cameras and turning the bike on and off it might get annoying. You don’t even notice if you just let it boot while you get you’re helmet on.

Honda should stick to engines and leave UX to other agencies. When you let engineers build UI this is what you get. Not sure why Honda doesn't take some useful hints from BMW, KTM or Ducati. Riding a motorcycle should not require an operation crash course. However, it's a great bike.😅

Thanks for the video, its helpful but un-fortunately its not showing what the settings are really for, as per 1/4 of the blue bars in power is actually full power not 1/4 power. All bars like that for trac, engine braking, full bars are least intervention, tamer bike. Its opposite to what we would think logically. But who ever said the Japanese are logical in, our way of thinking, aka Pearl Harbor, ??? not best idea. But we are lucky it ended the way it did because in 1942 their hardware , planes everything was so much better than anything. Amazing really.
Anyway. great bike and a few thousand km's later I'm still trying to figure out the settings screen, found out today if you change all your screens to gold , gravel, off road , etc, when you change wheelie and htrac and engine braking, it changes the setting to the same for all the modes, I had thought each one had fully independently adjustable settings but on my 2020 DTC its not, if I change wheelie mode or trac etc, its changed all the displays correspondingly.
I wish honda would update this to be more self explanatory but its not. Best description about this system software that I have read on TH-cam channels, and I have read almost everything. Is where the poster said the more the blue bars in the items, ie, all 4 1/4's blue the safer the tamer the ride. Less blue bars is the more aggressive bike in every way, its just the opposite to how we think in Europe, Austraila, Canada, and USA. More bars full is most computer bike, less blue bars is more like your 1981 Honda Elsinore 250 ! No computers involved, just Cdi and suspension settings and tires.
    Thanks again.
    Paul
