    I've bought the Manual Africa Twin Adventure ES and coming from a 2023 Goldwing with DCT I can tell you that DCT makes it easy, But utilitarian and takes some of the fun out of riding but puts back practicallity. If you wanna ride for fun get the manual if you are going somewhere or commuting the DCT is fantastic. With either transmission you are getting a great bike although Honda ought to have put a centerstand on it as standard.

    the paddleshift with dual clutch is a game changer off-road. ive found myself on steep inclines of gravel, 2up, fully loaded. instant shift down with no clutch grab, shift lunge, or foot shuffling

    I have just gone back to a 2008 Street Triple. No modes, TFT or ABS! My mechanic loves it as do I. The modern era of bikes just seems over complicated and expensive. It reminds me of the emperor’s new clothes.

      I will agree, a lot of the new over-tech'd up stuff is a whiff most times.
      When it's within reason, or at least semi-simple like Honda and Yamaha's implementation, I'm alright with it though.
      For commuting, cruise control on the newest MT-09 and the Africa Twin is a god send when you have 35+ minute highway ripps, and even though the ABS has only been a savior one time in about 4 years for me, I was glad it worked in the rain that night and kept my sleepy self from mashing into the back of that Rav4.
      The DCT transmission stuff is a non-starter for me though. Either make it a scooter with a CVT belt drive, or make it a manual motorcycle with a clutch. The quick shifter and slippers on the new manuals are fire though, super fun.

    I have the 2022 Africa Twin Adventure Sport with the DCT. It's an excellent bike for commuting, general touring, and dirt roads. The electronic suspension make a huge difference when going from pavement to offroad. It gets decent mileage, has, cruise control, car play, etc. When I bought my 3rd bike this year I planned on selling my Africa Twin but it's just such a great bike.
    I never use any of the automatic modes with the DCT, I strictly use the push button shifting.

  • @BikerGirlTraveler
    @BikerGirlTraveler 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I keep thinking about buying one, but to be honest I can’t convince myself to pay over 20k (almost 18k base price,, dealer mark up fees of another 2k, or more, taxes, registration, and other dealer fees) for a motorcycle. I am old school and I see all the electronic junk they put on bikes nowadays to be pure junk.
    If I could order my AT custom made, it would be with fuel injection, ABS, manual transmission, cruise control would be nice but not a must, and no electronic suspension or traction control or any of the other electronic garbage.
    And that is why I love about Tenere 700. It is a bare bone minimal electronics bike. As a world traveler through third world countries, not having any of that junk gives me peace of mind. If your bike breaks down, good luck finding a mechanic with the know how and specialized tools needed to trouble shoot such a complex bike in the middle of no where. Plus the price for replacement part hits you hard.
    I know, I have a friend who broke down in South America and had to ship his BMW to the capital of the country he was in and then wait nearly a month for the parts to arrive.
    And that is also the reason I stick to Japanese bikes. European bike dealers are very limited or non existent in the majority of third world countries. With most European manufactures having only one or no dealers in many countries. BMW fairs better than any of the Italian manufactures. May be because the fan base is greater for BMW’s than the British or Italian bikes. Making it easier to find shops that will work of BMW bikes. Japanese bikes are a whole different game. With more dealers and shops for them in every country.
    Consumer Reports did a huge survey of motorcycle owners. They wanted to see which bike brand was the most reliable. Yamaha came on top with 11% of owners report problems with their bikes. Compare that to 40% of BMW owners. Findings that were confirmed by a motorcycle magazine’s own survey a few years later. Here is why I am bringing it up. In the Consumer Report Magazine survey, they asked bike owners what was the problem they encountered with their bikes. The number one answer was electrical/electronics problems.
    I saw a video of some guy with a new KTM Adventure bike who had problems with his bike. The dispaly kept going on and off (if ai remember correctly), it cost him over 5k to fix the problem. In the US the factory warranty only covers the engine, transmission, and swing arm. Everything else is on you. WTH!
    After 36 years of riding, rain or shine, and I have never crashed or fallen, and all my bikes have been bare bone minimal in electronics, I must be doing something right. So the way I see it, if you need electronic traction control and electronic suspension in order to feel safe or safer on a bike, specially while riding in the rain of off the pavement, then you need to rethink your skills level.

    The best way I found is to leave the DCT in auto and then change down when you wish at a bend or whatever with the handle bar paddle and the DCT will change up after the bend when its ready.

    Seriously considering this bike right now. 2024 for the tubeless wheels, 19 inch front wheel and electronic suspension. I like the size of the gas tank for long distance riding. Luggage and bags can be added and removed.
    There are the touring goldwing type bikes... yes they are plush... but they are so big and heavy I think why not just drive a car. Same with some larger adventure bikes. Everyone has their own sense of balance.

    Nice review Chopsie, I think it's the base model I would go for, and manual too as it makes more sense to me. Part of the fun of biking for me is changing gear and having complete control of riding the bike! Although I would like the option of the bigger fuel tank for longer journeys

    I had a AT AS with DCT and it was brilliant, I never used the D mode on the gearbox S1 or S2 the gearbox also learns your riding style the more you use it. There is also a gearbox reset so if you get a used or demo one thats worth doing before riding it. If you hold the ent button down it flicks between carplay and the main bike screen simples, I never get why people struggle with the controls there easy to use.

    • @Stratocasterhead51
      @Stratocasterhead51 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They complain about the controls because its just about the only nit pick you can make.
      Its a null point because as an owner you get used to it.
      Having separate buttons to change songs is so practical.
      And almost no one speaks of the apple carplay integration.
      The single best use of a TFT display in the motorcycle world.
      I only wish it would connect via bluetooth and wouldnt rely on connecting to a headset.

    The extra small screen is a must have on a bike for big people, even on a bike with a large screen (large screen keep pressure of the shoulders for me,) to have acceptable wind noice while commuting on the highways. I use it on the XR and now even on the k1300GT. It lso keeps my visor clean in the rain. (6'3" and 20 stone)

    I’ve spec’d a few extras too, inc the fantastic quick shifter/blipper
    Much better option than a DCT box IMO - plus you save 13kg in additional weight 👍🏻
    I’ve swapped my Yamaha T7 for it, so I’m used to a 21” front wheel. I personally think it looks better with the 18” and 21” wheels, regardless of if you take it off road or not..

    I’ve enjoyed my 2017 Africa Twin standard model since new. It has been 100% reliable, needing only oil and tire changes. The AT is the Labrador Retriever of adventure bikes: not the best at anything but really competent at everything. I have come to really appreciate the faultless fueling and torquey understressed engine. It will pull smoothly from 2200 rpm, even a gear high. This coupled with the long travel suspension and 21” front wheel makes slow speed technical maneuvers surprisingly easy on a big bike. I test the competition too, but the AT hits the sweet spot being not too big, not too little, and really comfortable. Do you really need 150 horsepower? I’ll take the ease of ownership and peace of mind that the AT offers. Just be aware that the Adventure Sport model is noticeably more top heavy when fully fueled. I have never dropped my standard model, even riding thousands of off road miles. The BMW boxer design lowers the CG but the GS 1250/ 1300’s are just too heavy, expensive, complicated, and unreliable for me to consider. I loved my 1975 R 75/5. A basic smaller boxer would be a better actual ADV bike, but with a smaller profit margin.

  • @JEmmertz
    @JEmmertz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I almost feel like you're coming to your senses regarding the Honda Africa Twin and the DCT concept... 😋
    I fully agree that backlit buttons should/must be top on the list of things to address next, and the adaptable cruise control should come in a very close second. Neither is rocket science or hard to implement, and actually shouldn't have to add a lot to the price.
    With a bike like this I want to munch miles - going from point A to almost B, and then I want to hit the dirt for that final stretch - and I want to have fun all the time. I also want to be able to carry some 20 kg's of gear and being able to stuff it properly. From the start the Africa Twin did hit all the spots for me and now they're tweaking it, and I like what they are coming up with. I could live with the 21 inch front wheel, and I could live with longer travel span on the forks (front and back) and slightly better ground clearance, but, as a total package: This is beyond great right now!
    #Honda - If you ever manage to find a guy/girl, an engineer, preferably, that can design fork seals..... * Hire him/her!!! *

    • @wallacemjr
      @wallacemjr 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The information I have about the retainers is that the problem is not theirs. But rather due to a lack of care in maintaining the alignment of the fork, which has a long travel, when the axle is loosened, to change a tire, for example. This is what damages the seals or leaves everything out of alignment. I don't know if this applies to the new Adventure which has a shorter suspension travel at the front, maybe this will solve the problem too.

    'the more you ride it, the more you like it' 100% all the plus and minus points well covered. The left hand switch gear is comical but you do get it eventually. The DCT is awesome, just never use D and get comfortable with using the paddles if you like to be a bit more involved. As for the power, I've completed 20k on my latest and 3rd one, many of those with a hooligan on a KTM1290 all over Europe, it's never been embarrassed. Something about how it's transmitted, or the confidence it offers or just the fun of wringing its neck. Who knows, but if that's your concern, go ride one.

    It is a good bike, think I’d prefer the 19 front as don’t ride of road. Think I’d like the adaptive or think it’s called active on the BMW. Most people show it working on the motorway but one thing I didn’t know about the BMW with cruise control active was on a corner it slows the bike based on the lean angle then speeds up again as you straighten up.

    The best looking adv bike IMO. You can get the manual version in the Sport version. I was considering one but I think its falling behind its competitors. In addition to the ones you mentioned also missing hill hold, heated seat option, no centre stand as standard (+£299 I think ffs!). The Tiger 900 outperforms it and is less money with more equipment. The screen is looking very dated too. I think there will be a major update on the model next year as I did see somewhere and adaptive cruise patent. Great bike but just not for me......yet. Great review also

    One thing for your future content which no one else has ever covered is intercom quality of music in different helmet designs and manufacturers. I have a cardo freecom 4x and have two helmets, Arai RX7-V Evo and the music quality is brilliant in this helmet, the other helmet is a BMW pure adventure helmet and the sound quality is terrible compared to the Arai. For me purchasing of a new helmet is a gamble if I don't know what the sound quality is like as I listen to music all the time while riding. If you could review this and get all the manufacturers involved would be a unique watch for your audience

    If you’re leaning towards a more basic model it’s not the base African Twin, it’s the NT1100. Unfortunately in the US Honda thinks they can compete with Harleys and all we get is the gold wing and rebel 1100 and we do not get the NT1100. And we were not getting the Africa Twin but by some miracle we are getting this bike in the US. The ceremony where we sacrificed a Pan American by drowning it in the Pacific Ocean paid off 😆

Sorry this is random question, but seen as your riding expecting rain weather conditions, can you point me in the right direction of which laminated jacket/ setup your would recommend to reduce potential rain getting down collar of jacket and soaking under layers. I noticed in this video that it looked like your jacket had a rather substantial collar on it? Thanks in advance. Jim 👍

    I was recently looking at the AS but took another path. I live in Edmonton, Alberta and I want to visit a sister on Vancouver Island and a brother in Los Angeles. Comfortable ten hour days on North American roads is the primary requirement. I like the Africa Twin and I'm sure I would have been very happy with one but there are other, less expensive ways to meet the requirements. I ended up with a very well kept eleven year old K1600GT. For some reason the traditional large touring bikes have fallen into disfavour so the used market here is awash with choice. The BMWs seem to get beaten with the depreciation stick more than the Goldwings and the big American touring machines are very pricey so K1600 it is. I have a difficult time understanding the appeal of the tech integration offered on the new machines. I'm on a long distance trip. Why would I want to make it easier for someone to bother me with texts or calls? The integrated nav solutions tend to be very expensive. I can bolt the cheapest Garmin to the handle bars and if something happens while traveling I can walk into a box store and buy the cheapest Garmin as a replacement.
