I discovered last night that the Bag of Holding was renamed to the Spacious Pouch. The disappointment was palpable. It really feels like they hit the mark with some names, but completely missed on others. At least the rules are mostly the same.
For the new player I think both off-guard and spellshape name change is really good! Now I am not a native English speaker, but I think more people know what off-guard mean than what flat-footed means. And people who do not know meaning will understand it better. BCS what flat-footed means my foot is flat? What could it possibly mean? But off-guard? People know what guard is. So off guard would automatically click in their mind it means your footing is wrong, your body position is off or that you're distracted and maybe your lowered your guard. Same for spell shape. "Metamagic/Spellshape change how your spell works". So what metamagic gives me some meta knowledge from GM? Versus: "Oh so it shapes the spell to have different properties?" I think these 2 changes are great for non-native speakers
To me, Animate Dead sounds like it requires a dead thing near you to animate, instead of making something out of the aether. Summon Undead is a much better name to me just for that.
Trueseeing -> Truesight: could never give an answer for the rest of the community, but it costs fewer characters, contains fewer syllables, and feels more correct for a passive upgrade than the more active "seeing". No quality is a massive upgrade, but there's no quality in which it isn't an upgrade. Easy 5.
Truesight also being the more common name in other games almost to the point where its been a standard for 20 years, See Warcraft 3 as an example or even the truesight potion currently in pathfinder.
I agree. Also, with them talking about "mouth feel" earlier for things like "Spacious," "seeing" has an awful mouth feel compared to "sight" in my opinion. I would've rated this a 5 because I actually like "true sight" that much more than "true seeing."
I still don't get why especially Stephen is so upset about Petrify. The reasoning, that petrify is more associated with being terrified and therefore not good, is just "huh, what are you talking about?" It's the other way around. Turning to stone was there before (it comes from the greek petra, which means rock) Being petrified out of fear is literally being stiff as stone/being paralyzed/not able to move. In other languages it's even more pronounced. E.g. in German you have "(vor angst) versteinert", which word-for-word translates to "turned to stone (out of fear)", which is used for being petrified/paralyzed by fear. In French it just plainly stayed with "pétrifié (de terreur)" -> "petrified/paralyzed by fear/terror", with the only meaning for "pétrifié" itself being "turned to stone"

Force barrage is great name. Magic missile wasn't really a missile or projectile. It is force damage and on upcast it is a proper barrage with rain of hits at enemies.
@@aaronjung5502 Arcane assault sounds like dimensional assault, which is confusingly similar on one hand and a teleport into melee strike, so very different on the other hand. But I agree there were better options than force barrage.
1:26:15 the problem with "bag of holding" for Paizo vs a clothing company is the the industry in which you use "trade dress" (which is sometimes copyrighted and sometimes trademarked) matters, the fact that it's another pen-and-paper game book using the same words makes it legally closer plus, when it comes to copying names, multiple things that are individually allowed can still stack up to be a pattern that is illegal, Paizo knows that Hasbro has way more money for lawyers than them and is being extremely conservative
Did WotC not give up the rights to Beholder in the Creative Commons, at least the name? It's mentioned in both the Deck of Illusion, and the section on the Aberration type, alongside the Mind Flayer and Slaadi.

No one mentioned the main reason I love the Off-Guard name change. Compared to Flat-Footed it's more obvious/intuitive that you can be Off-Guard to specific creatures/attacks rather than all. Flat-footed is more often used in a general sense ie you are or you aren't, while Off Guard is almost always used in relation to an event ie you're off guard against x. Additionally Off Guard is used from both perspectives ie catching someone off guard and being caught of guard so it makes sense as a thing your character tries to do. Flat-footed isn't used in the same way.
Spacious Pouch should have had either alliteration or the "of". I can understand maybe not wanting to risk Sack of Storing being close to Bag of Holding but Plenty Pouch or Storing Sack or Boundless Bag or Carrying Cask

There really should have been a “this name doesn’t need a change” option because the way I interacted with it is anything that was “fine” was a 3 but honestly that means the 3 and below shouldn’t go into the product. If a lot of people interacted with it in that way then it probably skews the results
Something that I would like to know for all of these changes is if there was a lawyer in the room for them. Considering the speed at which they needed to go at, I would not be surprised if they they did so to try to shorten the time that it would take for the lawyers to approve that all the changes were enough to be cleared of the OGL. My point is that I think that they had the opposite of a marketing consultant in the room while they were making these changes.
As a "Never Mind" disliker, how well would "Supress Sapience" work for a replacement for "Feeblemind"? Alliteration, not tied to eugenics (that i'm aware of), fits with the mechanics of reducing someone to an animal-like mental capacity...

I like that they changed the alignment system but I've seen others that I think are more interesting ( like the MTG alignment wheel ) BUT, the holy v unholy is great for characters and enemies that fall into these specific .... sensitivities? I've always thought witches should have quirky abilities and curses/ herbal things v.s. regular arcane stuff. the 8 magic schools ( 4 main directions and 4 middle paths ) is an interesting alternate idea. some classes I might think would have a dip (specific spells ) into other categories for closer representation of the class origin. But it's still a fun direction imo

“Turn Undead” for me was better due to its historic context, moreso than the name change. I knew it from various horror films, and because the name comes from “to cause to retreat” (to turn tail and run, to turn a mob of people by using tear gas), but the use is definitely a more archaic one in the last 50 years.
The irony is like Mark I've had many beginner players be very confused at Turn Undead when reading it. Because for your average person "Turning" undead makes no sense.
I don't think Bag of Holding is very good either, we're just so used to it. Isn't every bag a bag of holding? It doesn't actually describe anything more than what a normal bag does. Spacious Pouch isn't great sounding, but it does at least describe it's function. Bottomless or Boundless Bag definitely feels better.
My most disliked change would have to absolutely be inspire courage -> courageous anthem. In its former version, the bard would have a lot more freedom in how they inspire their allies. I'd imagine most of them imagine it as music, but not every bard is carrying an instrument in combat and not all of them are singers either. For my bard it would be a few words of inspiration that would buff up my allies resolve. Now...its courageous anthem. I have actually no clue what to do with my character any more from thematic stand point. Historically bards were not all musicians but rather story tellers and oral historians, and previously one could totally play a bard in that style. I am a tad sad they got pidgeon holed into this flavor exclusively.
I hate the name for spacious pouch. I would only like it if people in-universe use the name ironically. Like if the only reason they call it spatious is because it is silly to call something that. islarger on the inside than on the outside merely "spacious". If I am being honest, "bag of holding" is better though not by a lot. Calling something a noun-of-verb'ing is rare enough that it implies that there is something special about it at least. But bag of holding is not great in and of itself. Like it works mostly for the same reason that I described for spacious pout, because the amount that you can carry with it qualifies for a heck of a lot more than merely "holding". So I think that this was a missed opportunity. I am not like mad about it because they were forced into it and they didn't have the time to really take advantage of the opportunity to give it a better name. But it is not good. To my taste and preference, of course. That was the only thing about the remaster that I had such strong feelings about. Everything else was either better or about as good.
I like most of the rule changes, but I hate most of the name changes. I'll never forgive Paizo for not fixing item DCs, though. They were supposed to get rid of all baked-in item DCs and replace them with the Standard DC table.
The reason True Sight is so much better than True Seeing, imo, is precisely *because* True Seeing is so close. It feels like a name where they deliberately avoided calling it the obvious thing because they were trying to be "original", and made the name worse in doing so. So moving to the Obvious Improvement is a huge relief.
I don't know if I'd have said 5 for it, but Trueseeing sounds awkward to me when I say it, while Truesight sounds natural. On Flesh to Stone to Petrify... Why the hell wasn't it called that already? (Hell, the only negative about it, which gorgon's gaze does fix - that some people think of it as afraid - is an abbreviation of a metaphor. Petrified with fear = frozen in place due to fear. The lesser talked about freeze response. I'm just so used to that effect being called petrification in all media outside of D&D and Pathfinder) The only reason spacious sack might be better than spacious pouch is that it adds alliteration, but they both bring to mind something I'd be happy to talk to my PF group about, but you probably don't want me discussing in your youtube comments, and spacious sack brings it to mind harder. I'm struggling to think of something I'd want to call it other than bag of holding that fits fantasy - Transdimensional Pocket for a sci-fi game, Hammerspace Storage for an anime game, but for fantasy I'm struggling. Oh, planar pocket which I saw someone suggest in chat would work for it. Turn undead makes me think it's just going to straight up... Turn them back into corpses. And/or revive them properly. Or charm them to my side. Causing them to flee wouldn't be in my top five predictions for what it does. Panic the Dead isn't a good name for it, but... It's definitely a marked improvement. I think that would have been a 5 for me because Turn Undead is so bad.
The sad thing about seeing Bag of Holding go is that there will be no chance of a player getting confused, mispronouncing the name and giving birth to one of my table most legendary items: the Rod of Begging.
I like the grumpy guy in the upper right corner. He reminds me of Thanksgiving dinner and the uncle who married a woman half his age late in life, and has 3 young children who are awful.
I listened to this instead of watching so im not sure who said it, but some of these guys get hung up on certain words too much. Pouch is not some sort of weird taboo in naming. If it was sack, maybe, but pouch? Also, bring up eugenics with feeblemind? I've never heard anyone ever have a problem with feeblemind because of suppsoed "Eugenics connotation." Also, with petrify only being seen as fear? I think they were running out of stuff to say and just started making stuff up with a lot of these.
not a fan of holy/unholy (I would have preffered unholy be a different word to differentiate and contrast it like Holy/Profane. Not a fan of vitality/void for the 2 energy types why cant it be like Holy/unholy (profane) damage? I am about half and half on name changes to spells. some are really bad imo spell names doesn't have to be accurate it has to sound powerful.
There's a hypnothic trope where adults get stuck in their childmind, and so we have the new better name for feeblemind/nevermind. It would probably also be more fun mechanically. Even Animal mind would be better.
The bag of holding is powerful but terrible. I have characters that'd buy a Spacious Trunk Bottomless Billfold/CoinPurse Or a Fannypack of Unusual Capacity "DELUXE" (neon) There should be more fun smaller or specialized "storage options".
I'm not super thrilled with spellshape. It works wonders for reach and widen spell, but I don't think it works for metamagics that don't literally change a spell's shape. I think spellsculpt would be better: it feels deliberate whereas spellshape can feel more incidental. I understand the complexities trying to make a new name for feeblemind, but godsdamn does nevermind suck. Just off the top of my head: mind wipe, brain break, ego death, thoughtstop. None of those are fantastic but they at least convey what the spell does

Animal Mind is the true neutral for me for an effect who's intent is to give the person the same amount of reasoning capacity as an animal.

Turn undead is used in so much fantasy, it's iconic, not just in dnd. As a recent media, Aqua in Konosuba spams Turn Undead.
The irony is like Mark I've had many beginner players be very confused at Turn Undead when reading it. Because for your average person "Turning" undead makes no sense.

I don't think Bag of Holding is very good either, we're just so used to it. Isn't every bag a bag of holding? It doesn't actually describe anything more than what a normal bag does. Spacious Pouch isn't great sounding, but it does at least describe it's function. Bottomless or Boundless Bag definitely feels better.

My most disliked change would have to absolutely be inspire courage -> courageous anthem.
In its former version, the bard would have a lot more freedom in how they inspire their allies. I'd imagine most of them imagine it as music, but not every bard is carrying an instrument in combat and not all of them are singers either. For my bard it would be a few words of inspiration that would buff up my allies resolve.
Now...its courageous anthem. I have actually no clue what to do with my character any more from thematic stand point. Historically bards were not all musicians but rather story tellers and oral historians, and previously one could totally play a bard in that style. I am a tad sad they got pidgeon holed into this flavor exclusively.
A third party should release a sheet of stickers with words on it, like magic missile, bag of holding, etc So you can cover up the new ones 🙃

I hate the name for spacious pouch. I would only like it if people in-universe use the name ironically. Like if the only reason they call it spatious is because it is silly to call something that. islarger on the inside than on the outside merely "spacious".
If I am being honest, "bag of holding" is better though not by a lot. Calling something a noun-of-verb'ing is rare enough that it implies that there is something special about it at least. But bag of holding is not great in and of itself. Like it works mostly for the same reason that I described for spacious pout, because the amount that you can carry with it qualifies for a heck of a lot more than merely "holding".
So I think that this was a missed opportunity. I am not like mad about it because they were forced into it and they didn't have the time to really take advantage of the opportunity to give it a better name. But it is not good. To my taste and preference, of course.
That was the only thing about the remaster that I had such strong feelings about. Everything else was either better or about as good.
I like most of the rule changes, but I hate most of the name changes. I'll never forgive Paizo for not fixing item DCs, though. They were supposed to get rid of all baked-in item DCs and replace them with the Standard DC table.
They also could've fixed all the crappy domain spells, talismans, and bad cantrips, but they apparently couldn't be bothered.

The reason True Sight is so much better than True Seeing, imo, is precisely *because* True Seeing is so close. It feels like a name where they deliberately avoided calling it the obvious thing because they were trying to be "original", and made the name worse in doing so. So moving to the Obvious Improvement is a huge relief.
I don't know if I'd have said 5 for it, but Trueseeing sounds awkward to me when I say it, while Truesight sounds natural.
On Flesh to Stone to Petrify... Why the hell wasn't it called that already? (Hell, the only negative about it, which gorgon's gaze does fix - that some people think of it as afraid - is an abbreviation of a metaphor. Petrified with fear = frozen in place due to fear. The lesser talked about freeze response. I'm just so used to that effect being called petrification in all media outside of D&D and Pathfinder)
The only reason spacious sack might be better than spacious pouch is that it adds alliteration, but they both bring to mind something I'd be happy to talk to my PF group about, but you probably don't want me discussing in your youtube comments, and spacious sack brings it to mind harder. I'm struggling to think of something I'd want to call it other than bag of holding that fits fantasy - Transdimensional Pocket for a sci-fi game, Hammerspace Storage for an anime game, but for fantasy I'm struggling. Oh, planar pocket which I saw someone suggest in chat would work for it.
Turn undead makes me think it's just going to straight up... Turn them back into corpses. And/or revive them properly. Or charm them to my side. Causing them to flee wouldn't be in my top five predictions for what it does. Panic the Dead isn't a good name for it, but... It's definitely a marked improvement. I think that would have been a 5 for me because Turn Undead is so bad.
The sad thing about seeing Bag of Holding go is that there will be no chance of a player getting confused, mispronouncing the name and giving birth to one of my table most legendary items: the Rod of Begging.

I listened to this instead of watching so im not sure who said it, but some of these guys get hung up on certain words too much. Pouch is not some sort of weird taboo in naming. If it was sack, maybe, but pouch? Also, bring up eugenics with feeblemind? I've never heard anyone ever have a problem with feeblemind because of suppsoed "Eugenics connotation." Also, with petrify only being seen as fear? I think they were running out of stuff to say and just started making stuff up with a lot of these.

not a fan of holy/unholy (I would have preffered unholy be a different word to differentiate and contrast it like Holy/Profane. Not a fan of vitality/void for the 2 energy types why cant it be like Holy/unholy (profane) damage? I am about half and half on name changes to spells. some are really bad imo spell names doesn't have to be accurate it has to sound powerful.

I'm not super thrilled with spellshape. It works wonders for reach and widen spell, but I don't think it works for metamagics that don't literally change a spell's shape. I think spellsculpt would be better: it feels deliberate whereas spellshape can feel more incidental.
I understand the complexities trying to make a new name for feeblemind, but godsdamn does nevermind suck. Just off the top of my head: mind wipe, brain break, ego death, thoughtstop. None of those are fantastic but they at least convey what the spell does
