- Part of the fear of heights is that mad desire to jump from them.
Alenka Artnik is a Slovenian world record holding freediver, and the deepest female with a monofin: she has dived on breath-hold to 122 meters. Only a few days after that historic dive, we filmed this exploration of the strange desire to jump whenever we find ourselves at a great height. Turns out we'd both had dreams where we did just that, and we both experienced that in water, you can give into it.
This was filmed at Deans' Blue Hole in the Bahamas, which is 200 meters deep, enough to give anyone vertigo. Florian Burghardt kept us safe and helped with all kinds of things behind the scenes. The music is 'Revelations' by Tristan Barton.

#vertigo #freediving
i was many many years old when today i learned that vertigo isn't actually the fear of heights, but that feeling of not knowing what's up or down. Fear of heights is called 'acrophobia' - wish i'd known that before i made the thumbnail...
I only know vertigo as a state of feeling very dizzy.
I've experienced it once during a ascent from a scuba dive. I knew from reference of my team and through training that my body position was horizontal and stable but my body was telling me I was going through a rollercoaster very quickly. I recognised what was happening (this can happen when there's a pressure difference in the inner ear) and it was sort of mind over matter at that point. After a while it subsided and I was able to continue the ascent.
I'm not very fond of heights either and drop-offs during scuba diving give me a funny feeling too.
I can see how people with a stronger response than me with being high up (or even better having nothing underneath them) will make them feel disorienting or dizzy or maybe even extreme dizzy like the physically caused vertigo.
@@R_T_HEIDE that sounds petrifying! happened to a friend of mine who burst his eardrum; all he could do was grab the dive line and follow that up.
It was more of a surprise, I had enough air with me and it happened on the shallow part of the dive so that wasn't a problem either. That's the part of freediving I'm hesitant about, not having enough gas with me 😅 Now there's a scary situation.
"Vertigo" is just dizziness. Acrophobia can lead to it, but it's not a fear of heights, as most people think.

I have never been close to experience anything like this, and I most likely never will, unfortunately. But watching this, I feel a primal attraction, a longing... but also a primal fear, for standing right at the edge of the abyss and letting go. It is so beautiful and peaceful, and yet so dangerous. Fantastic work! Thank you for showing us the depths!
Thank you, that was a lovely comment to read!
“Fear and desire are oposite impulses” even though you can fear what you desire and you can desire what you fear.
It’s not only the footages that inspire me, is what you say. Thank you for such a beautiful work.
our pleasure - glad you liked it

all about that freefall
Amazing and frightening at the same time!
Yes, it was like that filming it, too
Я не знаю что написать потому что не знаю зачем вы это делаете. Когда смотришь дух захватывает.👍
You have no idea how much joy in my heart and soul your videos give me, they capture every moment and every feeling about freediving. Thank you for all your hard work that goes into making these short films.
That's so nice to read, thank you Jay!!
❤👏
How lovely! As a scuba diver, I relate deeply to this. You have put, so eloquently, the feeling I have felt for years! Thank you!
i'm so glad to read other people share this madness!
This work was so well done that I lost touch with the fact that she was holding her breath the entire time. The duration of that held breath alone is already a dream in itself.
That's so nice to read - exactly what we were going after!
My next door neighbor friend was into cave diving. As we became adults and moved away from each other, I’d see her rarely during hometown visits. But one year recently I hadn’t seen or heard from her for awhile. Her brother let me know she drowned during a cave diving trip. Either got stuck or lost and ran out of air. Her swim partner found her. Scary way to go out.
sorry to read that - cave diving is very specialised, very tricky. I couldn't do that, i think.
sprtive and artific masterpiece! THX, a diving musician
Pleasure to read - keep diving and composing!
Quite mesmerising, struggle to hold my breath fir the length of video, less alone much much more.
Same here! Luckily we filmed it in little chunks

На сколько она задерживает дыхание?Это удивительно!❤
She can hold her breath for a few minutes, she’s a world record holding freediver
This reminds me of when I lucid dream, very nice❤️❤️
it's very much based on that, yes!
this is the best underwater video in the world, kudos to the cameraman and especially to the lady

It was a fantastic watch & listen Daan.
Thanks & best wishes to you & Alenka as you move forwards.

Glad you enjoyed it Lionne!
Breathtaking! I found myself holding my breath with her. Haha! Gorgeous filmography, editing, music, and of course the two main characters- the swimmer, and the ocean. ♥️ Wonderful work Daan.

First video of yours I've seen, but this is beyond beautiful and breathtaking. The storytelling behind how many great things in life involve falling, like falling in love, was amazing. ❤

Thank you Quenie - glad to read that!
Ужас ужасный! Никогда я бы не хотела попасть в эту бездну!!!!! Завидую отважным сердцам!❤️
Hahaha, yes, it’s not for everyone
Oh my goodness, you have touched on something that I have struggled with my whole life -- that insane voice in my head that says: "Jump". When I walk over a bridge or along a cliff over the ocean, I ask my partner to hold my hand and not let go because I am afraid that I will jump. On the one hand, I recognize it as a fear of losing control of my life. On the other hand, one of my dreams is to fly like a bird in their three dimensional world. Not many people understand that "insane voice" but you got it.
apparently, the French call it "l'appel du vide" - the call of the void. Common enough to have a name then, be it in French. We are not alone - let's all meet on a bridge in Paris and try not to jump.
Yeah, I hate it. part of me inching towards the edge, part of me in fear clawing at the ground to stop myself. hate it, hate it hate it.
😯 c'est magnifique et impressionnant ! Quelle sensation ça doit être de se retrouver devant cet abime et se sentir "tomber" . Splendides vues 👍👏
Merci David!
Extraordinarias tomas, de arte incluso en el riesgo. Congratuleitions.

I love this, thank you for the awesome share
glad to read that - it was a pleasure to make!
Ok I am a SCUBA Diver. However, when I am in water I feel the great fascination. I love using this three-dimensional space. The different perspectives I can take under water is just outstanding. It is not the fishes and wrecks and other things that satisfies me though. I feel the deeply connected to the ocean- under water even ten times more.
I recognise that feeling!
Same here. I was diving off the coast of Mauritius some years back where the seabed disappears into an inky blackness, an abyss that was terrifying and inviting at the same time. No small fish, of which there were thousands, would swim out over that edge so, I took the hint. A whole new set of emotions, often conflicting but, made me feel more alive than ever.
Absolutely stunningly, beautiful short video!
Glad you enjoyed it!

She’s amazing
Someday I want to give into my vertigo just like this but first I must quit smoking!!
When I was way younger I could hold my breath up to 2 minutes. I thought how amazing it would be to breathe under water. My step-mother is a certified open water diver and so she arranged for the family to go down to our local pool and do a little training. It was magical to be able to breathe under water. 20 years ago we went to Cozumel and we were going to try an open water dive class there but my brother and I were just getting over the flu and so we never got to dive. We did some snorkeling which was awsome!! My father continued to go diving but I was soo bummed I never had the opportunity to try it again. Maybe some day the opportunity will happen again!!❤
Yes, try it - take a freediving course. When started freediving i was still smoking, but then i quit cigarettes and my breath hold improved by almost a minute in a week.
Nice narration Daan 👍 nice vid. Superb

Flying Dreams are THE best Dreams, whenever i have them i never want them to end and when i wake and remember i try with all i have to get back to sleep and back into the Dream. I used to have them all the time but sadly not so much anymore :(
Yes same here! And then you wake up still half believing you can fly
That was a work of art, enlightening.
Thank you Betsy!
That was so beautiful that you can hold your breath for so long! I also loved seeing that beautiful clear waterline showing when it was showing from the top moving down halfway coming halfway out of the water, seeing it move closer to the bottom like we’re almost coming all the way out of the water but then seeing the waterline moving back up some! It looked like we were going all the way back underwater but except we were moving halfway back underwater which I loved a lot! I usually love seeing that beautiful waterline moving up and passing the top going all the way back underwater a lot though especially after coming halfway out of the water and/or all the way out of the water because that’s more popular to see! Good underwater breath hold by the way!❤️🐟🥰💧😅😍🦈💦🐳👍😘🙂🌊🐋😊🐠💐💕🐬👙
this was all shot underwater, except the last few seconds - or maybe I'm not quite understanding what you're saying? Love all the emojis though!
@@DaanVerhoeven I loved seeing that beautiful waterline showing when coming halfway out of the water and seeing that beautiful clear waterline moving up and down! It looked like the waterline was about to move back up and pass the top which meant going all the way back underwater! That’s what I meant by what happened the last couple seconds!

Technically speaking "Acrophobia" is the intense fear of heights, "Vertigo" is the subjective feeling of spinning around a vertical axis which induces nausea and vomit, and "Dizziness" is a subjective sensation of unsteadiness or postural unstability but less severe than "vertigo" 😁🙏👍🤓
Found that out about 1 minute after I published the video - hence the pinned comment.

and deep.
Well done,
