i was many many years old when today i learned that vertigo isn't actually the fear of heights, but that feeling of not knowing what's up or down. Fear of heights is called 'acrophobia' - wish i'd known that before i made the thumbnail...
I only know vertigo as a state of feeling very dizzy. I've experienced it once during a ascent from a scuba dive. I knew from reference of my team and through training that my body position was horizontal and stable but my body was telling me I was going through a rollercoaster very quickly. I recognised what was happening (this can happen when there's a pressure difference in the inner ear) and it was sort of mind over matter at that point. After a while it subsided and I was able to continue the ascent. I'm not very fond of heights either and drop-offs during scuba diving give me a funny feeling too. I can see how people with a stronger response than me with being high up (or even better having nothing underneath them) will make them feel disorienting or dizzy or maybe even extreme dizzy like the physically caused vertigo.
It was more of a surprise, I had enough air with me and it happened on the shallow part of the dive so that wasn't a problem either. That's the part of freediving I'm hesitant about, not having enough gas with me 😅 Now there's a scary situation.
I have never been close to experience anything like this, and I most likely never will, unfortunately. But watching this, I feel a primal attraction, a longing... but also a primal fear, for standing right at the edge of the abyss and letting go. It is so beautiful and peaceful, and yet so dangerous. Fantastic work! Thank you for showing us the depths!

You have no idea how much joy in my heart and soul your videos give me, they capture every moment and every feeling about freediving. Thank you for all your hard work that goes into making these short films.
A few years ago, I randomly discovered freediving, after never thinking about it for a second in my life, and it has been one of those singular things I've wanted to do the most, out of everything I haven't attempted yet. Whenever it's hard to believe in this experience, I'll sometimes watch this video and it gives me the trust in our world, that there will always be extraordinary things to discover and do. So much of the human experience-desire, curiosity, adventure, discovery-is beautifully captured in just 3 1/2 minutes. Many thanks!
My next door neighbor friend was into cave diving. As we became adults and moved away from each other, I’d see her rarely during hometown visits. But one year recently I hadn’t seen or heard from her for awhile. Her brother let me know she drowned during a cave diving trip. Either got stuck or lost and ran out of air. Her swim partner found her. Scary way to go out.
Brilliant work👏🏻👏🏻 You filmed these moments perfectly that I felt like I was Alenka😌 I adore diving and underwater world so this was something what made my day after watching. Keep on in your work and dreams because we all worldwide enjoy in products of it👏🏻✔️ Greetings from Croatia ❤️
Amazing job you guys! It is such a joy seeing the final project. It was fun getting some training in that day and watching you guys work your magic. :)
This work was so well done that I lost touch with the fact that she was holding her breath the entire time. The duration of that held breath alone is already a dream in itself.
First video of yours I've seen, but this is beyond beautiful and breathtaking. The storytelling behind how many great things in life involve falling, like falling in love, was amazing. ❤
Breathtaking! I found myself holding my breath with her. Haha! Gorgeous filmography, editing, music, and of course the two main characters- the swimmer, and the ocean. ♥️ Wonderful work Daan.
Oh my goodness, you have touched on something that I have struggled with my whole life -- that insane voice in my head that says: "Jump". When I walk over a bridge or along a cliff over the ocean, I ask my partner to hold my hand and not let go because I am afraid that I will jump. On the one hand, I recognize it as a fear of losing control of my life. On the other hand, one of my dreams is to fly like a bird in their three dimensional world. Not many people understand that "insane voice" but you got it.
apparently, the French call it "l'appel du vide" - the call of the void. Common enough to have a name then, be it in French. We are not alone - let's all meet on a bridge in Paris and try not to jump.
Ok I am a SCUBA Diver. However, when I am in water I feel the great fascination. I love using this three-dimensional space. The different perspectives I can take under water is just outstanding. It is not the fishes and wrecks and other things that satisfies me though. I feel the deeply connected to the ocean- under water even ten times more.
Same here. I was diving off the coast of Mauritius some years back where the seabed disappears into an inky blackness, an abyss that was terrifying and inviting at the same time. No small fish, of which there were thousands, would swim out over that edge so, I took the hint. A whole new set of emotions, often conflicting but, made me feel more alive than ever.
I saw quite a lot of people having different opinion on FB but I don’t know why I’ve a feeling that you would pick the first pic for your thumbnail and you eventually did! Such a great piece of work again! Can’t wait to visit Dean’s blue hole and bump into you guys in Vertical blue someday!

It looked like we were going all the way back underwater but except we were moving halfway back underwater which I loved a lot! I usually love seeing that beautiful waterline moving up and passing the top going all the way back underwater a lot though especially after coming halfway out of the water and/or all the way out of the water because that’s more popular to see! @@R_T_HEIDE that sounds petrifying! happened to a friend of mine who burst his eardrum; all he could do was grab the dive line and follow that up.

"Vertigo" is just dizziness. Acrophobia can lead to it, but it's not a fear of heights, as most people think.
