I've never heard this piece before on baroque instruments. It's much less of a "wall of sound" in the loud parts. Now I hear almost each instrument. Nice indeed.
Actually most of the players swapped their baroque bows for modern bows for this, precisely because they needed the bigger sound. Many are using their modern instruments as well. What you're hearing is simply great ensemble playing directed by a conductor who knows exactly what she's doing. That, and, you noticed it's not a full orchestra of celli and bass, right? You've likely only heard Beethoven symphonies played by regular big orchestras containing 8-12 cellos and 8-10 bass. There's your wall.
It was spring in '62 I believe; my 5th grade class, on a Friday mid-morning piled into a bus, a field trip to Cleveland'sSeverance Hall for a free dress rehearsel of LVB's 5th symphony. From the get-go Conductor Louise Lane fanned his rght arm and with his baton...stirred me up royal with a dynamic display of this work, and, what became a tradition tossed his baton into the audience...just AWESOME! JN 7:22
Love that they actually play the duhduhduh | DAAA figure as a Pick Up to the Downbeat like it is notated! Rarely have heard any orchestra play what’s written before for the opening theme (and throughout the development) - bravo! Fantastic ensemble blend
I believe it was Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music who first performed Beethoven on period instruments. But that in no way diminishes what Jeannette is doing.
Although this is the epitome of a warhorse, there’s nothing jaded about this performance. It’s urgent, brusque, and a bit rough. It sounds new and strange-perhaps recreating a little of how it felt to first hear this in 1808.

This is a very period correct and informed performance. Wind players are on multi-keyed instruments.
