You can almost hear the stages of grief imitated in music in this piece: 0:04: Shock/Denial 0:49: Pain/Guilt 1:50: Anger/Bargaining 5:20: Depression/Reflection/Loneliness 6:11: The Upward Turn 8:27: Acceptance
This is the best performance of Beethoven Pathetique period. It is the best interpretation I have ever heard. Barenboim is a master the artistry that went into this performance is incredible.
Stan Lyman no its not he exaggerates so much and in the trill section uses so much rubato almost sounds like his English. no offense to barenboim, I think his dynamic is near perfect sometimes but not everything else
I have a vinyl recording of Barenboim playing this when he was much younger. Even with some of the extremely talented pianists in the present era, I can't really think of anybody who was better than him, a truly brilliant pianist.
You have to have great physical strength to play this. Your hands have to be able to endure long passages of fiery expression. This is an extremely clean and pristine rendition.
It helps to lift 10 lb weights fairly often. The Pathetique is a walk in the park compared to the Appassionata, especially the bass, m.s. parts. Try the adagio to begin with on both sonatas.
it's so tough to keep the allegro molto e con brio part soft...yet barenboim does it so masterfully and still keeps the passage so well-articulated. perfect.

I keep coming back to this - Even with a a few small technical things, it just seems like this guy is in the mind of Beethoven --- like this is how Beethoven would play this today, were he alive. Most excellent.
It is a disservice to everyone to use the label "best performance", etc., in fact of all classical composers would not Beethoven be the most pleased by others' passionate interpretation of his work?

I found the sheet music for this in my piano bench once again. I haven't played this in about 8 years and my fingers are so rusty. I've been classically trained at piano for about 18 years now. Sucks how reality gets in the way of my playing.
He's just my role model. I am playing this piece of music myself, but I keep thinking that nobody would be better than Barenboim on playing Beethoven :)

i feel so happy to learn this piece. this is my favourite execution of pathetique. can someone please tell me the tempo mr barenboim is playing at? with metronome marking? thanks in advance :)
No, a 'piano sonata' usually has three movements, typically a fast 1st mvt in sonata-form, a slow 2nd and fast 3rd mvt. 'Sonata-form' has exposition, development and recapitulation sections. For example, mvt. 2 is in a different key, tempo and has completely unrelated themes to mvt. 1. Hope this helps!
This is the same piece that George's girlfriend plays when Jerry puts the Pez dispenser on Elaine's purse during her performance. It's a lovely combo of this beautiful music and one of my favorite Seinfeld moments.
Imagine how many hours Barenboim have practiced this piece, to be able to give us 9 minutes of pure perfection
Don’t forget about movement 2 and 3
And the other 31 sonatas
I played this for my mock GCSE music when I was 15. I did okay but er it wasn’t a patch on this ❤❤❤

For sure! Beethoven was the best at playing emotions imo

Do some forearm exercises, that's not good. I play this and is not that extenuating.

You don't need all that strength. This is being played way faster than originally intended by Beethoven.
He started to perform this sonata in 1964 and still he plays it with such emotion... He should live for 200 + years !
WOW that was good. He even emulated the lack of sustain beethoven had at the time. Excellent dynamics and wonderful use of rubato. What a pleasure.
I was wondering about that (the pedal) interesting... i like it :D
Best nine minutes and twenty nine seconds of my life.
this is an incredibly talented man performing the work of a genius. it's mindblowing

goldenthroat86 Jesus Christ that's so true
Oh dear! Isn’t it pathétique?
What a glorious piece of music.
Beethoven was the first metal head.
uh actually im pretty sure not. theer has been alot of statues made of metal before him
i dont think so,Vivaldi was too
That may account for his continuing popularity :D
No way man, Beethoven was a jazzer. Bach was the metalhead

Barenboim: one of the greatest pianists to bring back classical music in today's era.
This was my pièce de résistance for my final piano recital. It's a testament to my good instructors.

Ah, so amazing, if I do say so myself. I feel like he really shows us how to play Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique.
That's because Moonlight Sonata was unique. In normal cases, it's what Daniel said...
1st: fast
2nd: slow
3rd: fast
Reading this comment with no context is very confusing.
