It does help if you know what they are singing about though..... This is at a wedding - the blond woman has just been forced by the old guy (her brother) to marry someone she doesnt love. (the young bearded guy). Her real lover (Pavarotti) suddenly appears and denounces her. The black woman is her friend and the young slim guy is the priest. The action stops and they all sing about how they are feeling. It's awesome. :)
Pavarotti was young and june was also incredible. I am sad that i cant see pav anymore. He was my hero and light of my miserable life. God bless luciano's soul
I also think of "the boys" with this piece, but between goofball live acts, and Bugs Bunny cartoons, a whole LOT of kids got introduced to major classical music that might have otherwise been overlooked. My mom used to have her Caruso records playing all the time when we would come home from grade school, and I developed a LOVE for Italian Opera that I relish today. I don't know what they are singing about, but the music is SO huge and complex, the voices so grand...nothing today comes close.
The guy's name is Piero Cappuccilli, one of the best baritones ever! Yes, the gesture of Pavarotti is quite unhappy, but maybe due to the ( stupid) italian habit to applaud for themselves on stage. Anyway, a great performance, everybody is magnificiant!
My wife and I were privileged to have Shirley and her husband (Lou LaMonica) as dinner guests in our home some years ago. (About 25 or 30.) A wonderful once-in-a-lifetime event. She was totally charming and funny, as you'd expect. A cherished memory.
I have such fond memories of hearing June Anderson in great bel canto operas in the 1990's.... I Purtani, Lucia, Donna del Lago, etc. Her unique plangent timber soared above the tuttis like nothing I have heard today.
He avoids that guy's hand b/c he's obviously not done applauding that June cuteness :-). I love Pavi but in all on-stage performances w/other men he does his darnedest to put their voice in the shade, haha. But I still love him SO much... he makes me not eb afraid of dying- I hope it'll be possible to meet him on the flip side.
(Qual terribile momento!
I can't listen to this song without thinking of it's use in the Daffy Duck cartoon "Book Revue"! Specifically the part where the judge sings "YOU are GUILTY, and the sentence is LIFE!"
Pretty good performance; done as a concert piece rather than in the middle of an opera. Luciano had to throttle back a bunch or he'd have blown the rest out of the hall.
it may be this clip - i have this on vhs and dvd and can hear the voices much more clearly. the whole concert is pretty good - good lucia/"verrano a te" duet b/w june and pavarotti.
She did the role of Pat Nixon in Paris Opera's production of Nixon in China last year. It was her debut in the role and she was very well received. The production also included Sumi Jo and Madame Mao. These "old pro" ladies both did very well by all accounts.
thanks jose. :) I dont know if its the ONLY way but yes theres no doubt it enhances the experience. People who dont speak the language of a particular opera may not know this, but most opera DVDs have subtitles - and most live performances have a screen with the English translation. And opera CDs usually come with booklets where you can follow the plot in up to 4 different languages! So if you love the music, go on - get the full experience. :)
Simplemente... iii GRANDIOSO !!!!...
Ive seen several performances of Lucia Sextet (Di Lammermoor) but I have to say thet this is one of the best, not just Pavarotti is great but the Sopranos voice is perfect.
Yes, you are right. Maybe I exagerated when I said this was the ONLY way to enjoy it. At least I can say I have learned a lot everytime I buy a new opera CD with the booklet, so I can read the words. I can give you many examples, like the tragedy of Canio in Pagliacci, or the touching Vissi d'arte of the second act of Tosca, or the beautiful Di provenza il mare, il suol of La Traviata. Thank you for your reply. Greetings from Mexico.
Huh? I heard Pavarotti and Cappuccilli live at Paris Opera about the time this video was made. I well remember the easy size of Cappuccilli's voice but not Pavarotti's. Pavarotti didn't have a monster size voice like Atlantov, or King, or Corelli. It was plenty big enough for his appropriate repertoire but nothing special. He was a quality not quantity singer.
@rossmcl177 Congratulations, on my opinion this is the only way to enjoy opera. If you don't understand what they are saying, there is no way to enjoy.
Verrett in that gown and with that voice as Alisa is a waste and an insult. Still, great performance by all. Re: Pavarotti- that fat wop really COULD SING, couldn't he??? What a voice!
Good but there are better renditions of this piece like the famous sextet with Callas and De Stefano directed by VonKarayan with the famous encore or the one with young Carreras and Ricciarelli
I know it sounds wrong, but it's actually in the score on both occasions for the drums to come on the downbeat the bar before you're used to hearing them. I also thought that this was a mistake until I heard at least a couple of other recordings with the same thing.
It does help if you know what they are singing about though..... This is at a wedding - the blond woman has just been forced by the old guy (her brother) to marry someone she doesnt love. A luxury having Verrett in this sextet !!! Cappuccilli, Pavarotti, Anderson !!!
Pavarotti was young and june was also incredible. I am sad that i cant see pav anymore. He was my hero and light of my miserable life. God bless luciano's soul
❤❤💕💕💕💕
Pavarotti was not young here
Großartig, was für Musik was für ein Oper , unglaublich !
I also think of "the boys" with this piece, but between goofball live acts, and Bugs Bunny cartoons, a whole LOT of kids got introduced to major classical music that might have otherwise been overlooked. He is applauding his colleagues, not himself.
Shirley Verrett's slightly husky but rich voice adds worlds to the tone color of this sextet.
My wife and I were privileged to have Shirley and her husband (Lou LaMonica) as dinner guests in our home some years ago. (About 25 or 30.) A wonderful once-in-a-lifetime event. She was totally charming and funny, as you'd expect. A cherished memory.
I love when Anderson begins to sing.... ❤️
He avoids Capucilli's hand because he is applauding them. It's a generous gesture.
Bad manners and egotistical . It was a ensemble not a solo.
Maybe an ensemble but it was Pavarotti’s concert , his 30th anniversary concert in fact!
Absolutely wonderful. The great voices of opera past! Thanks for posting...
I have such fond memories of hearing June Anderson in great bel canto operas in the 1990's.... I Purtani, Lucia, Donna del Lago, etc. Her unique plangent timber soared above the tuttis like nothing I have heard today.
What an amazing ineup of incredible artists

Luciano e Piero - due grandi indimenticabili maestri!
There is no balance between the voices. Some are singing louder, others can hardly be heard.
Agree
Fantastic
Such stellar cast!!!!!!!!!

Bravo Bello Musica Inmortal !!!!
FANTASTIC
Cappuccilli !!!!!!
What a cast, mamma mia !
90ties the golden age of the entire world

Greatest singers!!!

LPortillo ㅋ피
ahhh thanks for sharing?
artisti eccellenti e belli..

Tempo seems a little fast.
Exactly, this is not Larghetto
They are all magnificent but it seems to be a little too fast.
quelle classe cappuccilli...
@qawwi It was a Shemp, not a Curley, feature.
Why can I not find this sextet with Sutherland/Pav/ et.al on You Tube? Was it taken down? Did I miss something???

The great Shirley Verrett is wasted here. Which one is Furlanetto and is he related to Ferrucio? And what is Pavarotti chewing?
3:53 the guy reaches for pavarottis hand and pavarotti avoids it
@rossmcl177 Congratulations, on my opinion this is the only way to enjoy opera. If you don't understand what they are saying, there is no way to enjoy.
Pavarotti bellowing
grande giuseppe sabbatini
That's all you could think of too, eh?
Sutherland rules!
all bravo singers...but nobody of them is great!
Verrett in that gown and with that voice as Alisa is a waste and an insult. Still, great performance by all. Re: Pavarotti- that fat wop really COULD SING, couldn't he??? What a voice!

yeah i know its just funny
lol
Menudo reparto
Beautiful voices, but I haven't the slightest idea of what they're singing.
SING “CHERN”! PWG
Paavoratti drowns everyone out.
june anderson stood out pavoratti avoided high notes good not matched well
M

That was rude of Luciano
its a quartet no a sextet
Great listening, but say what you like they ain't got what Callas, Di Stefano, and co had.
Warren Hamlet why, oh why, do we always have to invoke other singers when we have just listened to great singing. It’s like road rage.
he was finishing a ham sandwich when he came out on stage
Just wish Pavarotti would stop chewing gum in public.
Omg, he was chewing gum in public? That's a terrible crime I can't believe it, he should've been arrested immediately
Fabulous performance! cwecub's comment is quite disgusting!
Not liking June here at all. Wider than usual vibrato and sounds tired. Incidentally, she sounds like she's trying to be Sutherland. That's a kick!
babydrane yes here is not in her prime at all
Needs to be redone 80 90s fashion maybe with a Detroit crack hit
