    One of the questions I am asked most often during Skype sessions is “how can I be authentic and commercial at the same time?” What this usually means is “I don’t like what’s on the radio. How can I write the kind of music I like and still be relevant?” Well, today you just might get the answer to that, because today, we are looking at Bruno Mars, an artist who has managed to take an old-fashioned approach to songwriting and make it sound fresh again. Which techniques is Bruno using to get across this mixture of old and new? We're gonna look at melodies, chords, production, really give it the holistic treatment. And by the end of this I think you'll have a better idea of how you can apply all of this to your own songwriting. Let's get started.

    This is a great video but some of the chords have been simplified... such as F7#9 in That's what I Like, Calling it an Fm7 is a disservice I feel and robs it of the dominant function you've waited the whole track to hear. (and the other chords labelled as minor, but are actually 9ths and 11ths, infact they are missing the third so could be slash chords, for instance the first chord of 24k magic, is a Cm7 with F in the bass, not really a Fm11 without the third.. but the sound of the 11 is clear) Chunky's II-V is a Dm7b5 to G7 (diatonic to Cm). Apart from that this video is really good. Thank you!

      Liam, this really stood out for me and I actually just decided to check the comments to see if anyone had picked it up. You're the pinned one haha!
      I'm a keys player myself and when I saw that Fm7 I was saying to myself 'what the hell? That ain't an Fm7! It's got a #9 in it!' So good to see people on the same wavelength.
      Good video regardless, this channel is awesome!

    The thing is Bruno's new style really is developed through jazz. That's really what's tying him so close to the old stuff. Jeff bhasker is notably an amazing composer who worked with Bruno throughout his new project on nailing a lot of these complex harmonies. It's not just pedal points imo (even though that's one technique), but like you said the 9s, 11s and 13's along with some polychords which started to define his new sound. Going straight to the source of that lineage of music and bringing it to the forefront is no easy feat there.

    How to make it sound more modern? More 808s and hat triplets!
    Seriously though, great video. Very informative!

    • @TheDutchCreeperTDC
      @TheDutchCreeperTDC 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      808s actually originate from the 80s.

    • @ArtbyAtlas
      @ArtbyAtlas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      True, but they're everywhere now

    • @ronaldciresa640
      @ronaldciresa640 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Because the beats of the most relevant genre right now, Trap, are usually composed by fast-paced high hats, 808s, massive sub bass, synthetizers and strings, at around 65-80BPM.

    • @TheDutchCreeperTDC
      @TheDutchCreeperTDC 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Art by Atlas I think what you hear most on the radio right now are producers trying to copy the Chainsmokers. Which makes sense because those songs are less bass heavy and focus more on vocals which makes them really radio friendly

    Tbh this is one of the most precious YT channels I've ever discovered. You talking about certain things I'm always wondering about, but can't describe them in my own words. For example why Bruno latest album sounds so old fashioned and modern at the same time. Your examples are very clear and easy to understand. After every episode I feel like getting insights from god himself haha. Thank you for putting so much effort in your videos. Keep it up mate!
    For your next videos I suggest the british band The 1975. They have a really "poppy" sound, which isn't cheesy and cringy like most of the pop songs in the radio nowadays. Maybe you can analyze that in your next episodes!

  • @JonnyKaine
    @JonnyKaine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Bruno Mars is one of the few new pop artists that I find at all interesting, probably because he uses these kind of techniques and doesn't rely on those one note melodies. Can't wait for that to go out of style.

    "That's what I like" is a tip of the hat to 90s R&B. It's in the mind of Bobby Brown's "Tenderoni" (which is actually Babyface). It sounds fresh, but it's still deep retro.

    To all those who yap a lot on how pop music is just some random heart throb whining on a mic and classical/metal is the shizz because it has difficult guitar solos/instrumentals, complex lyrics and all that - I love those genres too and highly appreciate the talent involved (I grow up with metal), but watch this video on Bruno Mars, and pay attention to how he takes care of every single detail or nuance he uses for his songs. Complexity does not necessarily equate to quality, and besides pop songwriting is not as simple as it sounds!

      Thats a pretty black n white statement. I think the fact bruno is sued and blatantly ripping off old music that the masses just dont know about is kinda lazy and he is overrated. The things described in video are actually pretty basic things to most people the actually produce music. What is impressive is the fact he uses melodies and sounds that other pop music isnt doing, and fact he plays multiple instruments. However, i consider a kendrick lamar or hiatus kaiyote or tame impala or radiohead or massive attack or flying lotus or aphex twin in a much higher plane of "originality" and talent compared to bruno mars.

      Yes that would be nice. Virtually all the superstar Hip Hop Producer's are Producer/Songwriter's esp Scott Storch, Bryan-Michael Cox, J.R Rotem, Rodney Jerkins, etc since Beat Making is part of Songwriting. That's why they all get Writing and Production credits for both roles as they are technically wearing two hats.
      *PRODUCER=DIRECTOR*
      *SONGWRITER=BEAT MAKER/LYRICIST*

    I would love if you would do one video about Alicia keys as a great singer, songwriter and producer she fuses old soul and mordernity (I think) that would be great.

      Burt Bobain You're wrong. Philip Lawrence always mentions that Bruno always comes up with the ideas first. They then build on those ideas to make a song. It's more of a joint project all the time...

    • @timthompson2358
      @timthompson2358 6 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @dmt340
    @dmt340 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    that's very true. the way music moves forward is by artists being inspired by their idols, who were inspired by artists before etc, but doing their own interpretation and fixing the progressions to their current environment/perspective / pseudo tones. expectations.. another great vid

    Very informative man! You make these videos really enjoyable and interesting, one wonders if they actually know music that well. Didn't realize that Bruno Mars was that colorful with his vocals (as illustrated at 6:13), 2-5-1 turnarounds and magically confusing with attention(the trip on 24K Magic @ 9:56). Your analysis is really on point.

    I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work. I'd like to see you breakdown, "The Shins". I've always found their song structures fascinating and so intrinsically melodic.

    So glad I stumbled across your channel. So knowledgeable and eye opening. Thank you! I hope to see a video on Lauryn Hill soon because I think that's a unique one to analyze even though shes from the 90s & mostly an accoustic performer

    Hei, great video. It was really worth the wait, really interesting and useful. I see that you finally took the season to a new level talking about more elements beside melody, like harmony and sound. I tought it was a shame you did't with coldplay, considering the harmony importance, so I'm all for this direction (I see you changed the "how ... writes a melody" title). I really like how you don't try to talk about every thing that goes into the style of a songwriter, but you focus on the main peculiar elements

    Great video. Keep making more! Would really appreciate if you can explain some technical jargons or do a quick 101 of some music concepts.

    I've never paid attention to the trading spaces technique to that extent! This sounds like a fun writing/production challenge (to change it up every few seconds). Thank you for the informative perspective!
