If you have seen the other episodes in this series you will know that my goal is to analyse and understand how artists come across and make us feel something. To accomplish this goal, I look at all the little facets of being an artist and how they come together to form an image in the mind of our listeners. And so in the past, we’ve looked at things like melody, harmony, flow, production, music videos, lighting, design, makeup, clothing, and so forth. Actually he said the opposite. In her album Every Day is Christmas, she wrote happy music instead and not everybody liked it right away

I don't understand how you missed so many of the all marks of sia's music and songwriting.
Generally, the theme of sia's songs revolve around 1 thing, 1 emotion, or one noun. Ie Diamonds, Perfume, chandelier. she then writes lyrics AROUND that one idea or noun or emotion.
next is her kind of "mantras" or even chants if you will. these are usually at the end of the song, and you will hear sia repeating one lyric, usually with strong emotional ties. "shine bright like a diamond" "I am titanium" "im alive" or her simple chant at the end of "dressed in black" " cus im just holding on for tonight" from chandelier. you will find this chanting of a lyric at the end of many of her most famous hits.
and lastly, her unforgettable melodies. sia has a way of belting and modulating in a very distinctive way. when i heard rihannas "sledge hammer" i INSTANTLY heard sia's influence via the melody and intonation. she's very fond of sustained belts and changing the phonetics of words in a very "sia" way.
Ye like some of her old ones. Breathe me which to me the lyric sound reference to drugs and the toxic relationship between them. I'm In here repeats the words help can anybody see/hear/help me.

Pop music is not my favorite genre, but from all the artist I know to date Sia is my favorite. The lyrics, the videos, her voice, her concepts, I mean everything about her it's just mesmerizing

Sia is the best. I think she doesn’t participate in her videos mostly because she is good at singing and maybe wants to concentrate on this only. She does not want to be a mediocre dancer, or actor in her videos. She leaves this to other people so she can do what she does best - sing. And her videos are sooo creative.
When I listen to Sia I feel like my spirit is growing, sometimes cry and sometimes am comforted. In simpler words she is the best.
Sia never makes me sad. She cheers me up.

Sia is mostly misunderstood. Her authenticity is always linked to the music. As much as she is a songwriter, there is no other singer that can produce chord ballads like she can. That's a gift. The way she is able to pitch her voice up and down naturally is unheard of. This is the reason why she can emotionally connect with the people. Her last record may be about 'christmas' but I'm sure there was a reason behind why she released it.
Even her Christmas album everyday is Christmas , it's weird , happy lyrics but depressed voice

I feel like that even though she creates songs for different people with different lives and that that may not seem like creating an image like most artists do. But, I can always feel that in any song she makes, no matter for who, there is always some kind of undertone in the music that conveys her in a way that feels only more real and authentic because it was unintended
Her voice makes everything way more authentic doesn’t it! I’ve compared some demo songs that were sung by others and the comparison is just amazing. Will listen to the Sia version every time, simply because it sounds more than just a song.

It is a shame people have not appreciated Sia's Christmas album because it is amazing. I guess I am the only one who did not feel these were the usual "happy" Christmas songs. Some of them were actually sad to me (snowman).

This is 100percent true: Sia doesnt listen to any music shes preoccupied with watching tv shows. But surprisingly she makes chart topping hits, how is that? She has no one who imfluenced her on making music. Thats how original she is. That is a marking of a Genius,

What I love most about her is that she's real and honest, it's refreshing. When it's about the money, she says it is about the money (like songwriting for others: she said that she discovered that quantity brings more money than quality) or singing (during recording it was hard for her to reach Chandelier's high notes so she did it once and they copy&pasted it, but fans see her as one of the "real singers" so she was embarassed) or even her as a person (in an older interview she tells how she always smells like dog piss and how she pissed on the ground surrounded by the crowd during a James Brown open air concert).
She is an amazing person, I love her.

This solidifies my long held believe that Sia cracked the code of writing good songs. It is very impressive to see an artist that can produce in high volume with a consistently high quality.

Initially I didnt really like Sia but playing innthe background at work over and over I realized what an insane voice she has.
Now I dont really care what genre song she makes cuz that voice is dazzeling in any emotion.

What It Is and Frank deserve so much more recognition-way better than Back To Black in my opinion because she’s much happier. Even so, Back To Black was genius and her lyricism in the album was impeccable.
I'd really love to see a video that looks at how Frank Ocean writes a melody. This is because I think he breaks a lot of the common pop molds these other artists fit into, yet he chooses just the elements that keeps a song entertaining, catchy, and replayable. Keep up the good work, your channel is phenomenal.

As a fan of Sia's work, I knew a lot of this stuff but man, thanks for making this video. It's great material.
I know this is an older video but I just absolutely love watching you break down the concepts of all these artists! God, you are so intelligent and articulate. Thank you for this series, it gives me lots to think about when trying to create my own artistic image and melodic topography. You make TH-cam a brighter, smarter place. It’s refreshing.
It’s the same problem I have with Lana Del Rey. I grew in love with her music based on how melancholic it was but now that she makes happier more wholesome music her image has changed for me and I don’t see myself loving her as much, as an artist anymore.
The thing about skipping her first five albums is you skip so much content, so much of what makes Sia Sia (at least to me). There is a progression through those albums from truly suicidal songs, songs about being lost, addiction (Girl you lost to Cocaine-- such a fun video for such a sad song), blind or mute or alone (Soon we'll be found-- the video is so beautiful, inclusive because it's in sign language, yet mostly shot in the dark)... all the way to really upbeat songs about alcoholism (Co-Dependent, You Hurt Me, Bring Night On), depression (Bring Night On is pretty much a party anthem about how much better night is-- you get to drink, forget, ...)... Each album gets progressively more "pop" -sounding-- if you ignore the lyrics, that is. I know that many of those songs aren't as famous, but they definitely work with your analysis of Sia too. I think this progression is visible through her most recent albums also and through her choice to not show her face on camera: she is reaffirming that her music is about her music, something that was definitely true (but without the wig image) in the earlier albums. Consequently, without this image, Sia wasn't as well known during these 5 albums. Thanks for the analysis!

I think it's also important to say that she mainly wears the wig for privacy reasons, but in an interview she also says that she gets afraid standing on the stage above people and looking into their faces.

OMG, this is so fantastic! I loved to watch this, my mind just blowed.

His thesis, that: if you want to be taken seriously as an artist then you better have a consistent image. Okay. I hear him. However, I feel like his reasoning was a bit flawed when using the Christmas album as an example. It is a Christmas album. Who the hell would listen to a depressing Christmas album? But in fact, Snowman is very depressing on that album. Celebrities put out Christmas albums all the time. It’s usually not considered apart of their actual artistic portfolio. Using Sia for this theisis....idk. Sia has happy songs and sad ones and it’s never been a problem. I kind of don’t agree. Just with the reasoning part.

I agree, I follow a lot of artists that have christmas albums but as I don't really like celebrity christmas songs I don't buy those albums, and I am sure other people have the same perspective :)
You have a point: however, the same conclusion can be drawn from examining her other work. If you look at her older albums, you'll notice she has been very experimental from the start. She would swing from quirky trip pop to acid jazz to more electronic stuff, and only very recently she did a full 180° turn and went full pop.
I like her pre-Titanium stuff much better because I feel like it's more personal (Some People Have Real Problems is one of my all-time favorite albums), but I can still understand and respect her for the way she keeps experimenting with different styles and doing whatever the hell she wants.
La Esmeralda “pre-titanium” is a good way of looking at it. That single marked a turning point in her music and career. I would say her marketing before and after that were distinctly different trajectories

I just thought of an artist who actually explored almost all of the facets of modern music who is a singer-songwriter, is capable of literally transforming into different versions of herself but still keeping her raw nature: Christina Aguilera. Like it or not, she still performs (during the same set) rock, rnb, funk, disco, ballads, pop, lounge, blues music and more. The amazing thing is that she and her music director are really capable of blending and merging them all together.i watched her show last November in the UK and I was amazed by the variety and coherence of her set list.
Fun fact: she was the one who introduced Sia to the American music industry having her on The Voice as a mentor and co-wrote many songs together.

Perhaps, a lot of her songs sound depressing because shes a recovering alcoholic and vegan; who's been very active in animal rights. It's not a walk in the park being an animal advocate. Listen to Moby's music. Another point, is she's said it's difficult to find inspiration. I suspect that is why she held onto and showcased Maddy for so long. When she can have a synergistic relationship with another human being; it must be amazing. She's an open book, from her sobriety, depression, and stardom. Thank you for making this.
