    The way the music industry is structured today, you’re lucky if you write just one song that reaches the charts. But imagine what would have to happen for you to stay there for 15 years, to sell 80 Million records and to become one of the most successful bands in the world. This doesn’t happen just like that. There’s clearly a concept behind of all this that’s worth analysing so today, we are taking a look at Coldplay.

    I've listened to Coldplay since Parachutes. That's a long time and I never saw them in concert until 2016. Man... I was missing out on more from them. The show made that vacation to best in my short 31 years of life. Coldplay has a special place in my heart.

      I mainly agree with this list (+ the Beach Boys and The Doors) but the music of the Beatles is waaaaaaay too complex to explain in a video. Musicologists spent decades trying to explain what was going on in just 2 bars of an early Beatles song called 'Not a Second Time'!

    • @clockdockfree
      @clockdockfree 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The beatles were strumming guitars and putting together chords they had no Idea why they worked. Ask a jazz musician, what they were doing can be explained with modal interchange. Their music is packed with non musical attitude and psuedo-intellectual production concepts. They basically made a weird form of jazz pop without realizing it. However, they revolutionized the sound of rock and pop. Brian Wilson of the beach boys on the other hand was a whole other world of songwriting. I cant even compare him to the beatles, because the beatles made folky rock and brian wilson was really just a composer. He was in another realm in terms of songwriting. Not a better realm just way more music based one. He was a really simplified and modern Bach. His organization of frequencies and harmony is still unobtainable. Listen to Pet Sounds, listen extra extra close. Close your eyes and don't distract yourself, compare the intervals and bass relative to the vocals. It's otherworldy.

    Hi there! Thanks so much for videos like this. It's the first time I see a video like this in youtube, talking about music, from a musician, for musicians (the real ones.. who studied music academically at least).
    It's really surprising how you understand the context of each musician you talk about, and how you show how this (sadly) music business works nowadays; and I can realize that most of it, it's set to get the major sales, tranforming the sound to the one which most people would like, loosing the style in the whirlwind.

    Do Green Day. That'd be pretty interesting I personally think, as the chords are so simple but the songs sound so different each time.

    Songwriting analysis reminds me of record label meetings where they ask you “What makes your music original, unique and still marketable?” Then deliver some really great analysis lines from this video with real sincerity. The truth is when we trained in theory songwriters sit down to write a song we try different things until we are actually moved emotionally by the music and words that accompany them. If it gives us goosebumps it will resonate with the audience.

    Can you do The Beatles at some point? This may be impossible as they fluctuate so much album to album, song to song, but can you do such based on each songwriter over certain periods of time?

  • @bbu33
    @bbu33 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    When you talk about using the third in their melodies, are you talking about the 3rd of the chord being played at that time or the 3rd scale degree of the song's key?

    • @bitchimgayasfuck171
      @bitchimgayasfuck171 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure he's talking about the 3rd scale degree of the *key*, because the examples he gave for coldplay's use of the third were:
      1. HYPNOTIZED - key of F# major - the note indicated as the third *(A#)* is also the third scale degree of this key
      2. VIVA LA VIDA - key of Ab major - the note indicated as the third *(C)* is also the third scale degree of this key
      3. LOVERS IN JAPAN - key of Ab major - the note indicated as the third *(C)* is also the third scale degree of this key
      4. YELLOW - key of C major - the note indicated as the third *(E)* is also the third scale degree of this key
      5. UP & UP - key of F# major (or D# minor) - the note indicated as the third *(B)* is *not* the third scale degree of *either* of the keys, so I actually have no idea about this one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
      6. CHARLIE BROWN - key of Bb major - the note indicated as the third *(D)* is also the third scale degree of this key
      7. SPEED OF SOUND - key of A major - the note indicated as the third *(C#)* is also the third scale degree of this key
      8. IN MY PLACE - key of A major - the note indicated as the third *(C#)* is also the third scale degree of this key
      (I hope that made sense cuz I think I worded it kinda awkwardly lmao)

    • @bbu33
      @bbu33 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would the major 3rd interval of the key really convey the emotions he is refering to when played during any other chord than the tonic? Or does it only work because the chords are changing rapidly?
      Thanks for the awesome answer btw.

    • @bitchimgayasfuck171
      @bitchimgayasfuck171 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tbh I really don't know, you'd have to get someone much better at music theory than me to answer that 😂 I'm curious about that too though, so if anyone else could answer that, that'd be sweet!
      and no problem! (also sorry I couldn't answer your other questions!)

    • @leyonleo
      @leyonleo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tbh I think it has to be the 3rd of the chord because he talks about the major 3rd and in Minor Keys there is no major 3rd
