Broke down for 8 MONTHS. What went wrong..

  • My rollback is FINALLY fixed and back on the road! In the end, it turned out to be a misdiagnosis and incorrectly installed O-ring that snowballed into a 6 month breakdown and caused a major financial hit for both my company and theirs. Everything with the original shop ended on bad terms and I'm sure both myself and them would be very happy to never see one of my trucks in that shop again. But once it all went up the ladder to the corporate end of TEC Equipment, they stepped up and offered to have me take it to their Coburg Oregon location to figure out what the problem was and get it taken care of.
    I have nothing but great things to say about the Coburg TEC location, and if any of my trucks broke down again, I would gladly drag them 3 hours away over the mountain to have those guys handle the repair. They had the problem figured out in a day, great communication throughout, very knowledgable staff top to bottom, and they went to bat for me against their other location when they realized that the problems were caused by the previous repair attempt.
    The corporate side of TEC was in full agreement with the guys in Coburg and we came to an agreement that we all thought was fair. It's unfortunate that this whole situation happened in the first place, and if it would have been handled differently by the original shop it would have saved both my company and theirs tens of thousands of dollars. But in the end the situation happened, TEC stepped up and made it right, and I'm happy with the end result.

    Edit: I just realized the truck broke down in July and it’s now mid March, meaning it was down for 8 months, not 6. Meaning $32k in payments and insurance alone, not counting lost revenue..

      I'm sure they are happy they didn't get hit with a loss of use bill for the truck. Casey said he's out 32k in payments and insurance while it was down, meaning that truck needs to make $50K+ to make it worthwhile to own. They were already on the hook for the damage of the failed repair, so bending over backwards to make the owner happy is nothing compared to what happens if the customer gets lawyers involved.

      Not to try and sound like a dick, but...would this outcome have been the same for someone who wasn't a famous/infamous TH-cam personality? The average single man recovery/towing operation that isn't on TH-cam on a consistent basis? The negative publicity wouldn't just be constrained to the local community as would be with the little guy. Casey reaches the world. Just a curiosity question to think about. I'm glad that TEC was able to not only diagnose the issue your truck was having, but that they went to Cummins and between the two of them were able to work it out so that you weren't left further in the lurch. It's totally understandable why you are going to try to sell the truck - having something that expensive just sitting around for the occasional call when it may be the best option doesn't make sense financially for the single owner/operator business model that you have. I also applaud you for taking the high road in your description of the issues (even though some of us that have followed along since early days and can read between the lines), and I further applaud you for refusing to sell it when it wasn't 100%. At least now you have the monkey off your back with a broken truck!

    That's great news. I was wondering how the rollback drama was going. 6 months off the road being screwed around absolutely should never happen, but to have it fixed, and all the damage from the initial f*ck up repaired as a priority is the absolute best outcome! It could have dragged out for years if you'd had to go the legal litigation route.

    My first difficult miss fire was a brand new 1994 Toyota 4Runner it went into the dealer and never came out. Toyota took care of me with a brand new replacement. It took them a year to figure out what was wrong and it was a mistake while machining of the block. To much play between the distributor and the camshaft. The next one was my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee that had the miss fire problem between two cylinders. Jeep couldn’t figure it out and gave up fixing it. So I did a heavy duty fuel injection cleaning to clean everything and removing the carbon buildup on the valves and piston. It cleared the faults and has been running now 4 years without a problem. I’m thinking they don’t have technicians that have a personal pride to figure it out, no matter what.

    I work in N Texas fo a manufacturer of steel in construction, and we run 6 class B and 4 class A trucks daily. The "cheap" tow is because there are a number of people running S of the boarder licensed trucks and if you don't care about insurance you can get them. This drives down the amount that those who are legit can change and still find steady work.
    Open boarders effect everyone and everything.

    Casey, I'm happy that the rollback is now fixed properly, and for sale, I hope that you get your asking price. When I open my tow service, I will NOT own a rollback as a rollback would not be feasible for the work I plan on doing. I want to do the kind of tow jobs like B.S.F. However, I plan on being somewhere between B.S.F. and you. Yes, I might be 20 miles into the woods, but I'll also tow down the highway. A rollback is not designed to go through thick mud and snow. Plus, you need a special license to run a rollback, and I have less than an absolute zero desire to get that special license.

      No special license required for a rollback, at least not in the US. But no, you don't need a special license just for it being a rollback.

      @jays106 Yes, *_that_* rollback. But there are plenty of rollbacks that fall below those thresholds for special licensing. I've driven tow trucks for *_years_* and have never been required to get a CDL for any of the rollbacks I've operated. Of course, none were that large, either. Most were 550/5500 series Ford or Chevy trucks, but there were a couple of Internationals and a couple of GMC 6500s that were a bit larger. None had air brakes, though, or had GVWRs that required a CDL. And in the states I've worked in (Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio), there is no special certification or endorsement or license that is specifically required just to operate a tow truck, whether it was a rollback, an older style wrecker, or a modern autoloader. Couple of days of ride-along training with another driver until he's satisfied you can do it by yourself, competently, and then they shove you in a truck and put you to work - it's really been that simple.

      @arcanewyrm6295 Well, either way, I have less than absolute zero interest in owning or operating a rollback. When I open my own tow company, I'll be an off-road driver. That I know of no rollback is going to go so far back into the woods that the road runs out. Plus that I know of there's no rollback that has 4x4. No, my truck will be a light to medium-sized truck. Most likely, it will not ever tow anything bigger than a Ford 350 or a Chevy 3500.

    • @arcanewyrm6295
      @arcanewyrm6295 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @chestertaylor7341 Good choice, except for when you have to move something that has no wheels. Dollies are absolute shit in offroad conditions. A built 4x4 wrecker would serve you well, but it won't be able to get everything you'll ever come across. Just keep in mind that there will be jobs you'll have to reject once you get on scene. And I'm not trying to say rollbacks are better - not in the least. I'm just saying they have their use where they far exceed the capabilities of a wrecker.

    Awesome Casey😊 I'm glad Big Blue is finally back in business again🤗 It's especially nice to hear about corporate management being about integrity and doing the right thing for a change when unfortunately that seems to be the exception and not the norm these days. Usually bigger is bad, but in this case that meant they had another facility to send you to that turned out to be spot on. I imagine there's some interagency back billing and invoice swapping going on between the good and bad because of their ugly now😂
    But Good Grief😩 Talk about getting Lucy'd and making it feel like you were kicking air and someone took Linus blue blanket away from Cascade Heavy Rescue😥 All smiles🥰again😎

    Great to hear it is back and all better now! Bummer you may be selling it but totally understandable. That's a heck of a lot of money to be spending monthly and not be able to have the machine working and earning. Oh and if I wasn't a LONG way off from 406Garage, I'd be interested in that little pickup! :)

    When i did mountain recovery i had so many people tell me i charged too much for my services. One guy told me i needed to do his for free one time.. it sat up on the mountain until the forest service impounded it and siezed it.. brand new Ford pickup and brand new camper.. then he had to pay my tow fee PLUS the impound fee

    FYI the dealership repair shop where the rollback was is Tech equipment in Redmond. Oregon, bad repair shops, bad dealerships need to be called out for their bullcrap work.

  • @ducewags
    @ducewags 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Just think if a "noid" light was used on the injectors by the tech to start with. That would have told signal was missing for the injector.
    We can't turn back time on that one, and it's not the techs fault. A "noid" light is one of the oldest tricks in the book, and not a thing used now days by people. Any ways, thanks for the shows Casey, and the time to make them.

    • @Mountain-Man-3000
      @Mountain-Man-3000 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is most definitely the tech's fault. They are paid to diagnose and repair. If they can't do both they shouldn't bullshit and throw parts at the problem. There aren't many good techs anymore, they're all just parts changers.

    Awesome to see that it's fixed! I hate it when something doesn't work right and you never find out what's actually wrong with it. It's one thing when something not worth fixing it's entirely different when you can't figure out what it is.

    Had a trucking company back in the day. Not sure how you can financially withstand a truck being down that long. You must be a wealthy man!

    • @arthurr8670
      @arthurr8670 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's a tow/recovery business. They can't have all trucks going everyday anyway. I'm sure that helped. He just used other equipment that wasn't as good of a fit for the task as this truck would be. But this truck isn't always the best fit either. Having one down isn't so bad when you can use something else. Either way something is always sitting.
      The other side of this is social media. He makes money from that, offsetting his real income and costs.
