My family members had Atari growing up, but i wasn't really into gaming until my best friend got a Sega Master System! Shinobi & Ninja Gaiden. Many hours on those 2 games alone! Loved Rocket Knight Adventure as i hated double jump moves as a kid & i just couldn't master it. But as Sparkster you could just Rocket away & that was a game changer as a kid! i was big into comics as a kid too & Comix Zone also became one of my favorite games to play! Loved all your SEGA picks & thanks for the Retro Break!
Love the Jetpack mechanic in Rocket Knight / Sparkster! It’s so fun to fly around! It’s even better on the SNES game where you can use the L and R buttons in the air to dash
My first sega was the Genesis Model 2 in the states. Black power/reset buttons, with both 3-button and 6-button controller. My dad gave me Sonic 2 for my birthday, and I told him it was the wrong system because I only had the SNES. Then, he brought out the Genesis box. :-)
Recently bought myself a Megadrive II which I had as a kid (and stupidly sold when I was 9!). I also bought a Dreamcast with a bunch of games, controllers, keyboard and VMUs for £50! Never owned a Dreamcast before so looking forward to cleaning it up and getting into it.
Always a joy to hear your personal stories about games! I agree Master of Darkness and Ninja Gaiden are great action games, absolutely top tier Master System titles!
I still struggle with the end of Marble Zone on Sonic and I’m nearly 50 years of age! Great video mate amused me the wacky order you got your Sega consoles in!
Monster Boy 3! Thank you for bringing this masterpiece under attention again. I've finished it at least 20 times, and the world needs to know about the original metroidvania.
The first console I ever played was my brother's Master System. The first one I ever got obsessed about as a kid was the Dreamcast. But my God, the Japanese Saturn library is just something else. So many great old school arcade style games. It's unique enough to cement its place in my top 3 consoles of all time
Loved Sega when I was growing up and my favorite Sega console has to be is Dreamcast which had so many amazing shooting, fighting, racing, & more to choose from. I'm hoping that Sega will make a Dreamcast mini console which I hope happens soon!
The Dreamcast was amazing considering the short time it was on sale! Really hope there’s a mini console so more people can be introduced to its library!
I love the Pandemonium shout-out! My friend and I played that to death for a brief period on the PC back in the day, and I can’t wait to give it a try again once I track down a copy (probably for the PS1 this time around)
That was a completely superb video, one of your best ever (along with the Nintendo journey video), the main reason your channel is so brilliant and I love it so much is your personal anecdotes and stories for everything, it just makes every video so interesting and entertaining, outstanding work!
Spending most of the 90s in Japan, my time was spent with the Famicom, Super Famicom and Nintendo 64. I’ve always had an interest in Sega though and after adding an Anbernic vertical DMG design handheld to relive some of those memories I recently picked up the Sega, I mean Anbernic RG Arc handheld. Such an incredible experience. Thanks for the story and picking out some of your favourites.
Would absolutely love to see a Sparkster video ahead of the upcoming re-releases - I've never played either game and am very curious to check them out.
Master of Darkness is a great game the story, music graphics and gameplay are top tier. It did get a version on Gamegear which is also great, and that version got an excellent M2 port on the 3DS which is how I originally played it, I was definitely surprised how good it is, it was a blind purchase for me had never heard of it before
Thank you for the great video ! I wanted you to make a video about the Master system because I don’t know much about it and you did just that in addition to the rest of the awesome video !! Have a nice week !
My original Master System has Hang On and Safari Hunt built in. It also has a simple snail maze game that can be accessed holding down both buttons and Up on the d-pad during startup. Alternatively, other models had these (or other games) included on cartridges.
Dismissing Mega CD is a mistake. Dune RPG, Sonic CD, Prince of Persia, Ecco, Jurassic Park RPG, Terminator, Final Fight - there were a lot of great games on it that were either unique or far better than their Mega Drive counterparts.
@@RetroBreak I wish I had all my old stuff, I am exclusively emulating old Segas too! I used love Blackhole Assault too, though it is not highy regarded (rightfully, not a great game) - but give it a try, at least for the great story sequences, and perhaps it is one of the cheaper games out there!
I’m going to get some hate for this but though the SNES sound chip is better. There isn’t a single SNES game that has sound better than streets of rage 1+2 and Revenge of Shinobi! Also glad to see Sega bringing these games back
Why would you get hate for it. The systems specs doesn’t always beat pure creativity and genius sound design. This reigns supreme. Also, the music for games like DK Country 2 Diddy’s Kong Quest has high quality ambient music, I’d say it’s as good in terms of sound quality but a completey differnt style of music. Streets Of Rage 2 OST is just epic it’s perfect For that type of Game.
Golvelius doesn't appeal to me at all. I love Y's The Vanished Omens. Wonder Boy III is an absolute jewel if you give it a bit of time. And then of course, you've got to play Shinobi on the Master System.
I had to reload it as the first version was broken.. away this weekend but I’ll be able to fix it next week! Until then, here’s the videos: Consoles: th-cam.com/video/cE6sNmQqPsM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aEtZu17AvaisIRbT Handhelds: th-cam.com/video/47nKXPOT0ao/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Kjod8TTeUCYjhK4L
Again MDK2, not a game for me. There's something bleak about MDK2, compared to Outtrigger for example. In a similar sci-fi adventure vain, I would rather recommand Phantasy Atar Online or Offline, just beware every Phantasy Star game is hard to get into. You need to learn how to play the game. Do as you're told. Go to the guild and grind your way up. Phantasy Star is one ginormous game. The settings are huge.

I love learning things about video games from Matthew Lillard. He really does have a deep knowledge of everything SEGA.
Mega Drive II was my first console, I loved playing Aladdin and Batman ❤
Which Batman game did you play?
Great stuff, Mega Drive has always been my favourite console ever, some great games on all the systems mentioned

i love the gameplay edit with you still onscreen
Thank you! I’ve built it as a template so I can use that layout in the future too :)
Love the show man. You're doing a great job with everything.
Thanks! Appreciate it! :)

I also didn't know the Master System existed until i was much older. my favorite game is a fan made remake of Rick Dangerous lol

Was sega not that popular in Japan during the 90’s?
@@RetroBreak It was dwarfed by Nintendo which was just everywhere. I remember PC Engine being more popular than the Mega Drive too.
It’s like a parallel universe! I love the PC engine, will do a video on it in the future. Shame NEC didn’t have a chance worldwide around the time

Great picks for the SMS games. I’m of the opinion that Wonder Boy III is the best 8-bit game
I might agree there! It’s really an amazing game that holds up so well! I’d like to try the turbo grafx version sometime too
FYI, Master of Darkness and Sonic Chaos were also on the Sega Game Gear.
I knew Chaos has a master system version but not master of darkness! Love that I’m still learning things :D
You should play Ninja Gaiden Black for the original xbox. That is not easy!
Great content again 👏
Nice! 🙂
Nintendo is what Genesisn’t
Also: Sega rocks the house!
((Especially Dreamcast))
Wait, there's a Rocket Knight sequel...
There’s three sequels! Megadrive, Snes and Xbox 360 / PS3! All great games!
@@RetroBreak RIP my collector's wallet
I should be on commission! 😂

I have played some later on using emulators, need to get more physical Sega CD games! I did have prince of Persia and enjoyed that one!

Terminator The Arcade Game And Mortal Kombat 1 for Mega Drive/Genesis both have killer music! and they are both written/produced by the same person.
Oh WOW you missed out on Dragon Force 1 and 2 on the Sega Saturn👍
