Great video! Awesome fact about that F-16 is that it was the second protoype F-16 ever built (YF-16 #2). It was just recently unveiled after being repaired/worked on and painted back to it's original flight test colors/markings! It retired back in 1979 and has been an antenna test model for over 40 years. The team at the museum put in over 5,000 hrs to bring her back to her original glory! Such a special bird and wonderful museum!
Sorry about that, we're just basically tourists and don't know all the details about the aircraft. I think they do guided tours with people who do know everything, though!
The next time y'all make it to Fort Worth, check out the Vintage Flying Museum. It's at the airport right next door to where this museum is. They have several airworthy aircraft and several that are being restored.
The F-14 was designed, because of the F-111 was to big and heavy for aircraft carriers... So the Navy ordered the F-14. F-111 has a arresting hook to, as does the F-4 ...
Another reason that the F-111 was found unsuitable for carrier aviation, was the steep rake of the front windscreen. When on approach to the carrier's fan-tail, the pilot has to steeply 'flair' the jet, by pitching the nose upwards, so that the extended hook will catch the wire. Due to the angle of the front windscreen, when the nose was pitched up, the pilot could no longer see in front of the aircraft, at the most critical moment of his landing.
That F-111 is a Upper Hayford Jet. UH - RAF Upper Hayford United Kingdom. I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge Suffolk, England both bases where Closed in the 90's. I got Orders to AF Upper Hayford, after I got to the UK, I had already cross-trained in Food Service, and those Orders were cancelled. As my Job before I cross-trained was Crew Chief.
Most military fighter aircraft have arresting hooks. Not necessarily for carrier landings but to land in case of a braking emergency. Most Air Force bases have arresting gear available for this sort of thing.
It's called "Balls Nine" because every Air Force serial number that begins with 2 zeroes is called balls whatever.....because the zero looks like a ball. I was in the Air Force at Carswell AFB and we had B-52H, aircraft "balls sixteen" and also aircraft 1016 (ten-sixteen). See?
It’s nice to see a father and daughter learning about military aviation.
I’m a year older than him so that math doesn’t work. 😂

such amazing machines, the history behind each bolt and the people that make the museum happen are incredible.
I had an old friend who did a tour of duty on the Shangri-La off Vietnam during the Vietnam war.
The history of each of these things is HUGE
Wish they would have had one of the docents to give them good tour and details of the aircraft

we might just do that, we haven't left Fort Worth yet!
@@MarkandLindasXadventures if you do, and you see the guys working on Special Kay, tell Lefty that CJ says hello.
I ;have no idea who these folks are but they know nothing about military aircraft.
We're not experts but are keen to learn. We'd love to hear your insights on military aircraft!
I go to the rodeo but I've never ridden a horse.
Once upon a time I'll bet you didn't know sh!t about planes, either. None of us are born knowing it all.
That's Mark and Linda..🎉

I wish "they" could do a walk through before they shoot a vid and learn about what there filming.
But the journey of discovery though

The F-111B was given carrier trials, but was rejected by the Navy.

@@metfish That’s very true. But it takes more than that to earn the Wings of Gold.
Every time I have gone by to stop in and see this, the place is closed, so I just quit going by.
I think they have volunteers run it so if there’s nobody volunteering then they probably don’t open it? We got lucky!

@@MarkandLindasXadventures Love your video. Thanks !
Seems like they'd call it "One ball 16" LOL
