May i suggest you take a train to Punggol Coast MRT station, it is the latest station to open in singapore. Once outside you will be able to see the newly developed area(was quite a rural area previously), see how the public housing is and how our academic institutions(SIT University) are situated within the public housing areas. I was just there and even as a singaporean, it was a breath of fresh air to be in a "new" area with very little crowd or vehicular traffic.

I’m a 40 year old Singaporean….. years ago when Haw Par Villa was opened and I was just a young boy, it was more of a theme park than what it is now. The 18 levels of hell exhibit path used to be filled with water and we could take a boat ride through it. There was also a double water flume ride(like a water roller coaster) as well. Went up really high and you were bound to get wet! Plus there was people in traditional costumes doing scheduled shows daily. Now it’s more of a quiet park with scary looking Chinese statues 😂😂😂

    • @MarkandLindasXadventures

I can only imagine how epic it must have been with all those water rides! It’s still so fascinating, especially when you look at it through a Western lens. It seems so wild and fantastical-completely unlike anything either of us has ever experienced before.

Yay! You went to Haw Par Villa! Was looking forward to see you guys interacting with the turtles. Oh well! Anyhoo, back in the early 90s, there used to be a giant dragon head with a lazy river boat ride, you ride on through the belly into the gate of Hell, which now has been demolished and turned into a museum, the Hell Museum. Also there used to be a log ride river coaster which they took out as well as visitors dwindled in early 2000s. Also Haw Par Villa is near a port hence the sound of the bullhorn of the container ships.

Welcome to Singapore 🇸🇬 Sincerely hope you enjoyed our secondary rainforest that the park authority has tried to preserve, develop and made it accessible to locals and visitors. Not to mention the natural flora and fauna within our urban cityscape. FYI, the “bugs” are mostly mosquitoes, beetles, spiders, crickets. Many of the animals are bona fide wild and repopulated naturally.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome! We really did enjoy it, the shocker was I honestly thought I was in better physical shape (we both easily run 5k and sometimes 10k every other day) but that jungle humidity really socked it to us. I have never been more thankful for a nice walking trail and restrooms lol. Not really afraid of bugs per se; it's the mosquitoes mostly and the diseases they harbor, we have both had travel vaccinations but still would rather avoid a nibble from one if we can!

  • @___Danny___

The big trees are called Heritage Trees. They are dotted all over the island and developers and construction can't removed them without prior approval from the government, or they could be heavily fine for damaging the trees and "public shaming" on local media. The most concentrated ones are at the Botanical Gardens. Blair Road is one of many places you could see shophouses. The instagrammable ones are in Joo Chiat area. If you go beyond the big tree that you mentioned, you'll see what's left of the old train tracks of KTM (Keretapi Tanah Melayu), Malaysian Railway train depots. There used to be trains plying from Singapore to Malaysia and Thailand as well as the last stop for the Eastern & Oriental Express before it moved to the Woodlands Checkpoint. Anyhoo, there are more to Singapore than what's available in the tourist guide as well as what you can see at Marina Bay. Oh and try visit the Geylang Serai area, that's where the heart of the Muslim community is. Kampung Gelam near Bugis is the face of the Muslim community, for tourist to take photos and enjoy the atmosphere but if you want an authentic experience, Geylang Serai is the place. Just don't go to the other Geylang area. That would be the red light district

Tiger Balm is a Singaporean brand actually. Reason why it's so cheap. You should go to their theme park. Haw Par Villa, a free outdoor kitsch museum featuring Chinese mythology and legends as well as a paid museum about Hell and Death. Fun! stuff!

Born and bred Singaporean here. I’m ethnically Chinese but am not a Chinese from China… I’m almost 40 years old and I don’t even go Chinatown often. Our Chinatown is kinda like an artificial version of what Chinatown “should” be like? I wouldn’t say it is truly authentic as many of the shops cater to tourists…. In fact many of the restaurants are run by China born Chinese who immigrated here and started a business. (Yes Singaporean Chinese and China Chinese aren’t really the same 😅) For me, if u want a truly local Singapore Chinese experience. I think heading to geylang is more authentic. It’s our de facto red light district, but it also has lotsa delicious places to eat.

There are many money changers around town. And there are other money changers at People's Park Complex and Chinatown Point (shopping mall). All around the Chinatown MRT area. Ask the many people around and they will direct you. Most of us speaks English. Shops that accept credit cards are usually in the malls/restarants/cafes or if you buy bigger priced items. As you may know, there are extra charges for using these cards and will either eat into their profit margin or transfer it to the customers. Most of us don't change using the ATMs (FYI there are many machines in malls, in train and bus stations and around neighbourhood towns). No crazy charges by the banks and they give lower rates as well. You passed by the largest hawker centre and market in Singapore - Chinatown Complex. There are like 200 food stalls inside (majority of tourists just walked pass it which I don't understand). Chinese New Year is in January. Every year they will set up stall selling dried meat stuff like the dried sausage, waxed duck etc. Tiger Balm is a local brand, Singapore product. Do keep to the left of the escalator in Singapore for people who wants to keep walking down/up the stairs on the right side 😆You can see the people behind you on the right side thinking of trying to walk past you.

There are money changers everywhere in Singapore. In Chinatown there’s quite a few in the People’s Park Complex. You can ask around. Shops and restaurants accept credit cards but in the hawker centers it’s cash. Locals have their own form of cashless payment though.

Locals use a QR code payment system but it won't work for us, I have tried it several different ways, no local number or address makes it impossible. The best way is cash, just getting that without getting fleeced in the process from fees is pretty difficult ...apparently.
