    The state and city should pass a law that mandates that to be rented as an "apartment," it MUST have in-house (not in the shared hallway!) kitchen and bathroom facilities.

    • @torkakarshiro5170
      @torkakarshiro5170 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Why? That bathroom-on-the-hallway concept is a historic concept, so many people made that work, and many student homes still work that way. It is like a floor of roommates. There is no reason this should be forbidden. It is just a question of how much money you want to pay for it.

    • @JamesKaufman1973
      @JamesKaufman1973 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      @@torkakarshiro5170 Note the quotes I put around "apartment." If you're advertising an "apartment," then that means it is completely self-contained, meaning the bathroom is INSIDE the apartment. This place would be more appropriately rented as a "room" with shared facilities.

    • @TUBESPECIFIC1
      @TUBESPECIFIC1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@torkakarshiro5170 It is a very historic and classical living arrangement dating back to ancient times and does work as long as everyone respects one another. I stayed in some rooming houses like that 20 to 30 years ago here in the states and stayed in tons of hostels and guesthouses abroad where you either have a simple room or you stay in a dorm and share a bathroom. One must be extra careful about securing wallet and valuables in more communal living settings where in your own apartment, you can leave your wallet, phone, and laptop out all the time. Little places like that aren't for sex and long relaxing baths and often you get a locker to secure your things in, particularly while showering. Some tourist guesthouses of the backpacker sort over in Europe were designated as, 'party hostels,' where the scene can be truly different. Western European countries have housing and tourist accomodations catering to many interest groups so everyone could be where they fit in be it gay, sttraight, party, quiet, artsy, hip, conservative, or whatever. In Asian countries, it was super fun, everyone fits in and usually respects one another yet used to being close together with limited space. They do have tiny basic rooms often catering to young people and students. In Korea they're called, 'goshiwon.' Even capsule hotels where you just get a bed sized box are available in some markets too. Some high tech looking and some very basic like military style.

    That is not a legal apartment. I looked it up a long time ago, when you showed a apartment with no kitchen. The landlord IS NOT required to furnish kitchen appliances, but the landlord is required to have gas access for cooking in the apartment & access to water. A shared hallway bathroom would meet the 2nd requirement.

The nice thing about it was I had a sort of kind of private bathroom. There were three solo rooms on that floor and they shared keyed access to a multi shower/cubical bathroom. Which was nice, didn't have to share with the whole floor and was usually by myself in there. The room did have a sink at the very least.

    Honestly, Cashew, were I in my 20s and if it had its own bathroom, I could make that first "apartment" work. With a small space, the idea is to build UP. So here's what I'd do: I'd get a bunk bed and use the bottom bed for a sofa (and for my down-and-out friends to sleep on occasionally). I'd put shelving above the bunk bed - OR - perhaps some netting to store towels and linens. I would use a foldable tray for eating and working. I would get a tall, narrow bookcase for clothes on top shelves and other stuff on the bottom. I'd use two plastic file cabinets with drawers and a plank on top for microwave and maybe even get a watercooler. Also, in nice weather, I would put a big pillow out on the fire escape to sit and communicate with my gods. That place is so extreme that I felt the need to figure it all out! That's my cerebral aerobics for the day!

      When I was younger, up til early 2000s, a minimum legal apartment in NYC was 400sq ft with kitchen and bath.
      Then about '04 or '05 they dropped the minimum to 200sq ft but it had to be a new unit or fully renovated unit.
      Now, as of last year, I saw that minimum space is 150sq ft (not including kitchen and bath) and to be considered a legal apartment it has to have a kitchen (fridge/sink/stove/cabinet) and a bath (sink, toilet, shower or tub).
      These micro prison rooms are ALL illegal.

    I think some very old buildings in my city are like this. I remember hunting for my first apartments as a 20-something, and seeing ads where the rent seemed suspiciously cheap. My mom warned me about buildings where the "apartments" are just bedrooms, and everything else is shared, sort of like a college dorm. I never tried to live in one--it just sounded way too cramped, and I didn't want to be stressed out by the idea of needing to get up to pee at night.

  • @BonzerMrT

    I’ve come to realize as more and more people wanted to move to NYC, these buildings just started to cut their rooms in half piece by piece. That’s why apartments look like 80% of it’s missing. It’s because youre sharing what use to be a full place with a whole another group of people. For example the second place shown probably in the past extended past that wall across from the “fireplace” and actually included the other parts of a home.

    • @jsreidnyc

      Exactly! Most of these commenters about this being "illegal" or "unsafe" or worse have no idea. Nobody is forcing them to rent these rooms. Go seek out another place if you don't like it. It's not much different than dorm living (which costs MORE). Plus, in many of these buildings with shared bathrooms, they are not hastily put up stud walls, but real walls built between 1880s and 1920s. These buildings are officially called tenements as a legal description (shared bathroom) and not much different from just renting a room. My small 360 sqft apartment was once TWO apartments that had a shared bathroom in the public hallway. (They were combined in the 1960s).

    You can make a Kitchenette, dining room living room, closet and bedroom in 100 square feet. You could even fit a shower toilet combo in a 2x2 corner of the room.
    I know that you can do it because I built a space that small and a buddy stayed in it for 6 months.

    I don't know - I think if I could afford to eat out for dinner and get a decent bunk bed with a desk or sofa under I'd consider the 2nd one as it was very pretty and the bathroom was very clean - for someone just starting out it was a lot less depressing than a lot I've seen...

      I mean, yea, it’s less depressing than the partitioned “rooms” that people illegally rent out of office buildings, but one can easily rent a room in an actually apartment or house, share a bathroom with one or two people tops, and have access to a kitchen for that price.

      Exactly! A "room" in an apartment in this neighborhood will cost $1300 and up. Plus, you'd have to share space with an unknown. So, this is not a bad price. Especially since it has lots of light. I'd still get myself a small fridge and microwave though....

    Love those single room occupancy "apartments" on the west side. Some crazy ones around west 72nd street that actually creatively pass building codes. Btw to be legally an apartment each bedroom no wall can be less than 8 feet. (unless over 3 bedrooms in unit). Also, since it's sharing a bathroom with others, it's a dormitory or hostel. I love how Cash still gave advice on how to furniture them...making every place seem excellent! lol

    1st apt I would build me a loft bed or buy one . Get bed off floor one area turn it to my kitchen area with a dresser . Plenty of ideas hear . Under loft would be a small desk area or put a Small Chair like Recliner or something to sit on. Invest in a foldable table like a tv stand eat on. You can tuck away. I could do alot with 1st Apt .

    I lived for a few months in a basement suit that was about 8 x 20, but it actually had a bathroom and kitchenette in one half. The other half was the bedroom.

    If these apartments were a big square then at least that would be something to work with.
