    Single mom here... I don't know much about how to fish other than casting and my 12 yr old daughter loves to fish. We've bought poles, learned to bait and with handy girly gadgets (hook removers, rubber gripping mits so I don't have to touch the flopping, slippery fish, nets, etc) we've done alright along the years, but have never really learned these how-to's. Somehow we've ended up w several empty reels when our lines broke or acted funky. I've just gone and bought new ones 😂. Thanks for the great tutorial bc i just respooled her favorite reel w your video, and she's going to think I'm the coolest Mom ever 😎😅.

      Lol, I use my kayak unless I am with my kids. Was using one of those 'fishing tubes' with the seat for a whhile. But our local lake has a couple 'dead spots' that hang onto you. I had to get a guy in his boat toss me a line to pull me loose. No matter how hard I kicked, I could not get loose. Another time when I got stuck, i hooked onto a bass and in the ensuing battle , the fish pulled me free of the dead zones grasp. I switched to a kayak after that. Plus, having a stringer with 2 big catfish keep swimming up under your legs is NOT FUN!

    Just in time. I just picked up a new 'mini spincast' rod. I took it to the lake, tied on a swivel and a bobber and cast it in. Well, I was thrilled with the cast,,,,,,,until i went to reel in and found out that when it was spooled, it was NOT secured to the reel. Goodby to a swivel, all the line that was on it, and the bobber. I should have used an old bobber. Unfortunately, the wind was blowing away from shore and soon the bobber and line were gone for good. Hopefully a boater will see it and pull it out. I hate finding discarded line and rigs and often take my kayak along the shores and collect all the I can reach. I have been doing this since I saw a bluejay struggle for over 2 hours while people attempted to reach it. It was tangled in line from a rig caught in a tree. Nobody was able to reach it and unfortunately, the bird did die. So, this video came just at the right time. 1 question tho. How long does line stay usable on a spool? I am talking about line that has NOT been used. Its stored inside the house, so temperatures are not extremes and no sun hits the storage box.

      Some better than others. Heavier braid seems to work quite well.

    What should I do if the reel when it brings line back in, continues to birdnest every time?
    This is getting insanely frustrating for me. I have replaced line twice now and it doesn't make a difference. This line is barely a month old and just like the previous line, it continues to bird nest when reeling line in on the inside of the reel and then makes it impossible to cast out after that.
    I don't have the money and won't for a long while to go and get new reels.
    I have 2 that are refusing to cast more than about 20 ft. out and one that keeps bird nesting when reeling in.

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If a spin cast reel is tangling when reeling it in, it's time to do a thorough inspection for broken parts. Most likely, the pin that extends out of the bail and wraps the line around the spool.

    Doesn't work, tried that method several times and each time the line coming off the new spool twists up and tangles even if I make sure it is coming off in the same direction. What am I doing wrong?

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Try this, it sometimes works: instead of coming off the narrow side of the spool like the line is wound on, point the broad (round) side of the spool towards the reel and let the line come off the end of the spool similar to how a spinning reel casts.

    I'm new to finishing and believe I bought the wrong type of line for my rod can anybody tell me is there a specific type of rod to add on my spincaster ?

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any good medium or medium heavy action rod around 6' or so will work well for most fish species. As for line, most spincasting reels like 10lb monofilament or 12lb.
      The heavier the line, the less you'll be able to fit on your reel.

      Enough to fill the spool. It varies from reel to reel. What I do is periodically remove the cover and see how close the line is to being full.

    The view was bad. I think it showed the spool turning to allow the line come off which was good but not shown. If the line comes off while the spool is flat on table and not turn the line will be twisted

    • @TheWeekendAngler
      @TheWeekendAngler  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct. Allowing the spool to turn will help to prevent line twist

      I put my spool on a wooden dowel and put the dowel betwern some books. Lets the spool release line and I control the tension with my free hand. I leave the reel on the pole and hold it between my knees. One hand to reel and the other hold the pole in front of the reel while controlling line tension.
