Great video, appreciate it when people take to time to assume that there are people who are just starting not just people who have been doing it for 20 years.
I’d like to add something I recently learned, if it backlashes at the beginning of the cast tighten the mag setting. If happens at the end, tighten the spool tension.
For anyone still on the fence about baitcasters I can tell you from personal experience that it’s worth the time to master. It can be frustrating at first but once you’ve got it down you’ll never want to go back. I’ve never loved a fishing pole more than my daiwa tatula series baitcaster and using it has been some of the most fun I’ve ever had fishing. If you’re competent with them there’s not a better type of real out there and I’ll die on this hill!
@@urbanfloridafishing mybe one day we woth have to do this as bc reels will be next gen reels were u dont have to use tension as reel know what w8th is on line just think out loud
This is 100% right. The magnetic break is for the end of the cast so as you get comfortable back off on the breaks. Then you can bomb it with no worries.
No it’s not.. read your reels owners manual. This isn’t how you adjust a baitcaster. The weight of the lure has nothing to do with the tension knob like many believe. The brake does but opposite of what many believe.. generally the heavier the lure the less brake. Your spool tension knob is only to keep the side to side play out of the spool. Read the manual
Once you start getting the hang of your casting, you'll want to start backing off on both of your spool tension and magnetic break. At a certain point, you'll be fishing, no breaks at all, and very, very little spool tension it just takes practice. Keep it up, everyone!
Yea I have mine as loose as possible for when I’m casting top water baits as far as possible. Sometimes it starts to backlash but I just let the reel go and watch when the bait gets close to the water. You’re right tho it definitely took a TON of practice. Backlashes will happen it’s just apart of it/ learning
After 50+ yrs, I got over the fear of using these reels. This is exactly how I was taught 2yrs ago. Since the switch to these reels, I get in 3-5casts to 1 with open face type reel. My old poles have been getting a bit dusty every since.
Very Good General Video That Explains Some Key Points. However, With a cheap rod/baitcaster set up like this on most occasions and any lure that’s not heavy (examples of heavy in weight for a lure is near or over an Oz) you will not have any cast distance. *IF* you have a cheaper rod/reel, set the tension knob similar to this guy’s video but to where the lure almost free falls. Time placing your thumb on the spool to stop it from spinning as the lure touches the water. Also pay attention to how fast the spool is spinning. Make sure line isn’t coming off too fast. The lighter the lure the faster the spool will spin off line from momentum of your cast, but you lure isn’t heavy enough to pull the line out causing a backlash. This is where the magnetic breaks come in, the lighter the lure the higher you want to set it to start out. Every baitcaster and most lures are different so you’ll have to play with the setting to find what works best.
Hover your thumb over the spool when you’re casting. Just let it barely touch the line as your lure is about to hit the water. When it hits drop your thumb.
Used to do the same with the tensioner..then someone pointed out you just dial it back until you feel the spool knock back and forth when you wiggle it and snug it up just barely. Then Its good to go .
My tension is always loose like there is a little play side to side on the spool, its the break that plays the main role, set it depending on the lure weight and wind.. i got a Shimano curado 200k
The tensioner is wayy more important then the brake. Your just not doing it quite right. And depending on how your casting some times you do want the tension lower and the brake higher. But thats for dock flipping n such. Where your casting slow. For traditional casts the tensioner magtters more
I had a friend growing up trying to teach me to use one i wasnt horrible at it but he used a thumb tension method that didnt need to change settings for lures just the tension your thumb had on it and it was so hard to get depending on the lure.. i need baitcaster lessons..
I wish I had watched this prior to hitting the lake today. I got too comfortable with my caster and loving how it throws. My buddy offered a new lure to me which was much lighter than any of the ones I’ve been throwing. Magically I turned my tight spinning beautiful reel into a tight, bundled up birds nest in about half a second. Lessons learned
Nah what you do is set the knob untill the lure falls fast not slow, then set your breakers to low or none and lastly don’t take your thumb off the spool or use your top of your thumb to rest and control the backlash, this is how you bomb lures
Drop test doesn't prevent back lash i recommend starting tight and back off until lure creeps really slow or you will be picking back lash when you zing it until you get the swee4 spot
You don't have to change anything for each lure. No spool tension (just enough to keep the spool from wobbling), brakes at 50%-75%. Once that's set you can throw whatever you want.
I learned how to use a bait caster my first time just from watching vids now I’m on the river never picked my spinning-reel up again it’s easy no bird nest non of that
I saw someone else give these same instructions, years ago. Never had isssues first time using bait caster after watching. I can not use them in the dark though
do you put your thumb on the whole time or only when it’s a little above the water? today i’m goosing to a lake and i bought my first abu garcia baitcaster and i’m excited to use it
Bruh ima stick to my spin cast. This is like driving Manual
Its really not as hard as people make it out to be but you do need at least 2 braincells
@@SilkyXShadowXshit I only have a half
Agreed, I can use one but I do damage with my open face
Lol I drive manual daily and just swapped to baitcaster yooo it's definitely fun wen you get it down
You can't drive manual?
Great video, appreciate it when people take to time to assume that there are people who are just starting not just people who have been doing it for 20 years.
I’ve always been a spin reel user but finally just ordered a bait caster and I can’t wait to use this!
I’d like to add something I recently learned, if it backlashes at the beginning of the cast tighten the mag setting. If happens at the end, tighten the spool tension.
Bingo!
Simple, direct, fast, this is great.
Wow, I've always wanted to get a baitcaster set up. Thank you for the back to basics video!! 🤙🎣
Thanks so much for these tips they work I tried with my bait caster
That’s a nice jerk bait
Spinning reel user here ✋😂😂😂
I use all three sometimes
Thank you so much this video helped me I just got a new bait caster. I’ve never had one before. Thank you so much.

Daiwa for life!
Yes sir I remember being 13 and casting in my front yard for hrs to learn definitely my favorite
Thanks so much! This was very helpful for me as a beginner ❤
Thank you for your sharing bro, happy blessed New Year to all of you.
This video was helpful cause I bought one yesterday online so idk when it’s arriving but it’ll help me because this is my first time using one

Mags for beginning of the cast. Tension is for end.
I never knew that thanks for sharing now I won’t get back lash every time.

I'm new to fishing and I am doing alot wrong. Now I can atleast properly cast thank you! I didn't even know these could be adjusted like that

1/8oz - 1/4oz lead or higher.
I have just got one but seems a little hard to get my head round hopefully I'll beable to get use to it once I practice 😮
Carretilha toop....
Thanks man
You should set the brake as loose as possible then adjust the tension knob. This nice the knob is set then adjust the brakes.
That's what I said.
My dad taught me this when i was young
Good video!
Nah what you do is set the knob untill the lure falls fast not slow, then set your breakers to low or none and lastly don’t take your thumb off the spool or use your top of your thumb to rest and control the backlash, this is how you bomb lures
I agree ☝️
Beginners won’t be able to do that
The dude in this video has no clue what he’s talking about anyways who tf uses braid with a damn jerk bait 🤦♂️😂
Lol that's pretty much how i taught my brother, except no thumb. He spent his whole first day crying. 😂
@@The7thFish I just started fishing and it seems pretty simple to me
Perfect
Wish I saw this before getting my new combo. Yesterday was a nightmare. New to fishing and that dang thing had me cussing all day.
Great advise honestly

More brake, less backlash and less distance too.
Good Job
Tq bro, new tips for all😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
Set U Is good friend.
Appreciate the video 👍
Good🎉
Always adjust your tension to the weight of the lure before you set the magnetic break
Bro…thank you.
Thnx
i always go a little lighter till it just barely begins to birdnest, it gets me far and its fun
Me who use my finger for my glass line : "yea... I love this thing"
One week of practicing now I'm good

Is that a favorite combo? They originate from my country! What models are those?
They’re made at the Banax factory in South Korea. It’s a Favorite Soleus reel. You can get a better reel at that price point.
@@Benjamin-S thanks for the reply! Have you heard about piscifun carbon? Was thinking about this one
Thanks
What baitcaster is this
What reel is that? Looks clean
It works for me

Do this and when you get little to none backlash, start lowering the spool tension knob and the drag to cast longer
I’ve done what all the videos say but my cast still feels like it’s working against itself and not going far

Bait casters are nice but i can’t even count how many times I forgot to set the bait caster to the right setting after putting a fresh lure on
You don't have to change anything for each lure. No spool tension (just enough to keep the spool from wobbling), brakes at 50%-75%. Once that's set you can throw whatever you want.

What combo is that?
What rod and reel is that?
If you got Daiwa tatula u don’t have to adjust Tension break everytime u switch lure
All you need is change mechanical side
I learned how to use a bait caster my first time just from watching vids now I’m on the river never picked my spinning-reel up again it’s easy no bird nest non of that
I don’t know what that even is but I want it!
Even if it’s your first time you never need more than half way on your brake. Just stick to adjusting your tensioner per bait
I don't even got money to buy a rod but watching this anyway 😅.........Imma get one soon tho
Mantap,saya suka itu,salam dr Indonesia
okay i will give it a try again
🤜🤛
I was wondering what the fuck that left knob does 💀
I saw someone else give these same instructions, years ago.

I can not use them in the dark though
do you put your thumb on the whole time or only when it’s a little above the water? today i’m goosing to a lake and i bought my first abu garcia baitcaster and i’m excited to use it
Essentially, if you loosen the brakes, you need to feather your spool with the thumb all throughout the cast. This comes with practice.

Thanks for breaking my bait caster. I "tightened the tension knob all the way" and now it's broken. I'm going to sit and cry
So thats why mine was creating a nest....thanks

That is the best step by step ever on a baitcaster. Thanks.
What’s the reel and rod name ?
What’s the benefits for a bait caster? Seems to me there’s just downsides, am I wrong?
Just got one myself and all the line fell out so I put it up back to the normal pole thanks for info maybe I will try it again late
