    I remember i listened Genesis albums one side at every morning, lying at my bed before going to school! It made me realize something better than the present situation i was in. It was kind of natural meditation, altough at that time i had no concept of meditation...of course. I was 15. but i think it saved my life!...It gave me a direction...

    It's funny hearing Phil talk about seeing "Yes" a lot and hearing them all talk about themselves during the "Nursery" & "Fox" period one's left with the opinion that they did realize what a Great band they were !!! : )

      Isn't that's funny, though? You can imagine Supper's Ready as a masterpiece that was entirely planned out on paper and crafted in complete secrecy with some huge masterplan to dominate the musical world. In reality, it was a few different songs they threw together that happened to work well together.
      I wonder what it's like to listen to songs like Supper's Ready forty laters having been in the band? Or what was the recording of Close to the Edge like? Imagine having written it and being unsure of whether or not it's any good or not. Then imagine getting that amazing response (over decades).

    "It wasn't a real democracy, because some people were more powerful than others. The more bloody-minded of us tended to get their way more often..." (this was the "pseudo-democratic commitee system" he referred to in his "resigning" letter).
    I am a stupid fangirl. Comments like this make me want to have a time machine and the ability to be a fly on the wall at their rehearsals. I feel like my curiosity about Genesis can never be satisfied; maybe the result of being so late to the party.

    • @haironend
      @haironend 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I saw them in 1976 and thought I was too late to the party. You cannot be a stupid fangirl if you like Genesis; without doubt one of the best bands in the world! Phil Collins went to my school & left the year I started. Peter Gabriel shared the same communal gardens for 10 years and I never saw him once, so I am resigned to simply listen to their wondrous musical legacy...

      Sileithel Tony tended to get his way more often than not, then Gabriel and last on the list would be Hackett and Collins. Contrary to what’s been said about Phil turning them into his band in the 80s Tony and Mike still had the main say, I don’t blame Phil for what came from invisible touch onwards, it was gonna happen anyway with the changing musical landscape.

      @talktomeaboutlife 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wasn't even alive when he was in Genesis, but from what I gather from archival material and interviews, etc, is that he was always pretty mellow and withdrawn in private, away from the stage. Very much one of those performers who adopted a certain persona on stage.

  • @ytnsanw

    @mothxal Not sure what interview you were listening to. I heard:
    1:40 "I think we were writing better together as a group."
    4:05 "Took the song to another dimension."
    4:15 "Produced what was our best piece of composition.."
    4:45 "I thought, 'That sounds fantastic!'"
    5:00 "Incredibly strong moment"
    7:29 The masks "worked really well"
    7:45 "It was a great musical moment.."
    10:15 "So we thought 'Ah, this is interesting'.."
    Sounds pretty positive to me....

      I like how they were able to stick a Genesis to Revelation Style track on there in the form of Time Table. Along with Horizons it creates two perfect 'intermissions' between the meatier tracks.

    • @talktomeaboutlife
      @talktomeaboutlife 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, definitely. I generally judge Trespass -~ W&W separately from everything that came after (although there are always elements later on that recall earlier, Duke for me is right up there overall), and on that basis I would say Foxtrot is the standout of the first era. The other PG albums are all good, of course, but just seem to not hang together as well as albums as Foxtrot, which is just such a unit of songs for which Supper's Ready is the crowning achievement, but ultimately so so because of the rest album supporting it and feeding in and out of it. Every song on there fits perfectly, but I can't honestly say that about every other album.
      My only real qualm is that I often find myself wishing Firth of Fifth had been on Foxtrot, it would fit so perfectly after Can-Utility, going into Horizons and Suppers Ready. But how much perfect can you fit on a single album? :P

    This what I saw on a Yes website. Sometime in August or September 1968 Bruford quits Yes to study economics at Leeds University, shocking the band, who recruits Tony O'Riley, formerly of the Koobas. For about a week a drummer named Dave Potts also rehearsed with them.

  • @yesshows100
    @yesshows100 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @kfsfkakf
    In 1977 I went to see Genesis with people who said the same thing. In fact they thought the band was overrated and Supper's Ready was no big deal. 30+ years later they are still devastated by that show and Supper's Ready. Those people have been apologizing for 30+ years and after 100's of shows only YES, 1971 -1979 was equal or better. I can only imagine what they would have thought if it was the 1973 show with Peter on vocals instead of Phil.

    I still think they could do it, generally creative and artistic ability gets better with age, scientific ability decreases. As far as Phil being in retirement, well that's up for grabs. He would just need to come back out of retirement. I mean, everyone including myself in 1996 thought he was done with Genesis for good, and then he came back and did a tour with them in 2007. I guess what I'm saying is never say never. You're right about his back problem, but he could still sing.

    I was disappointed later on that my sister wasn't into prog rock when she was the one buying the albums. She stuck with Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Tull, Grand Funk, Cooper, etc. I'm not sure if her friends got into Genesis, Yes and the like either. I suspect after all these years, they saw Pete with Genesis on the Midnight Special and thought, "He's gayer than Bowie," which off course, he wasn't, but word of mouth never reached our household.

Nothing worthy of TOO much praise, but it was still clear that Mike and Tony were the composers of the music. Ray just sounded so wrong on that album, though yeah. On a couple of the longer instrumental passages it was still clearly Genesis.

Yeah, you can do a 22 minutes song sound like a movie. this song has a very clear beginning and a very clear end. The constant evolution of the song. For me, this was something else ( first time i heard it was like 10 years ago) it is not overrated because it was and should be the flagship song of PG Genesis era
