The first one being Jordan Burns, former drummer of Strung Out and the second and most important one being Derrick Plourde, former drummer of Lagwagon who is probably the most insanely talented punk rock drummer of all time (RIP)

Or because there was a popular band who needed a drummer and since they have a lot of money they can basically hire anyone they want so they get overqualified people to drum pop punk songs because they’ll pay them more than their other job

One thing you’ll notice about most high level pop-punk bands (Yellowcard, Blink 182, Pierce the Veil, Green Day, Silverstein, Allister, etc) is that they have top tier rock drummers. Three things drive good punk…power chords, picked bass lines and high level drums. Without an aggressive, fast grooving rhythm section, punk falls flat on its ass.
Better title : underrated drummers because writers hold stereotypes about punk music.

Yeah I'm with you, not crazy about the assumption that because they are in punk bands, the drummers aren't very good. That's the music they want to be playing and these guys are damn good.
Dave Lambardo from Slayer based his whole sound off of hardcore punk rock. His favorite music was punk

As a bassist I'm going to go as far to say in all my years of playing in bands you can honestly consider drummers f'n athletes. Their entire body is a finely tuned machine otherwise it doesn't work. That's something to witness day in and day out in a practice setting. All the respect.

That’s such a great way of looking at it. I always said we danced with our instruments. But yeah, it’s very athletic in a sense. It’s athletic the way skateboarding is athletic - ripping around and constantly practicing and reenforcing the basics, then working out more difficult things over and over and over until you get it just the way you want it with your own style to it. I guess the glaring difference is that the most hurt we can get is to rip skin off our fingers. I don’t skate anymore, so broken bones are pretty out of the picture.
@@creamysauce7966 you can never go wrong with a classic Fender Presicion bass, or if you can't afford the Fender I think Squier makes lower priced but still quality models thru Fender company. I know they do with 6 string Stratocasters so I'm sure they'd offer basses too? Hope that helps!

Fun fact for any Marching band fans: Travis Barker made the snare line for Blue Devils drum and bugle corps (the greatest corps in Drum Corps International, with 20 finals wins) but passed up to tour with his first band. If you want to find good drummers, I suggest watching DCI clips, their techniques and playing are amazing. My favorite sport of all time as well

@@yeti4269 He passed up auditions in the early 90's. However when he tried to march what would've been his age out year in 96, he ultimately got cut and never did make the line
I knew Travis was a marching percussionist! You can really hear the influence of marching too. I’m not surprised that he marched DCI. He’s totally qualified
I read that when Blink fired their first drummer it was at a festival Travis was playing at with his other band. He learnt Blinks set list in 45 mins and joined them that day

Fun fact, did you know that Joey Ramone was the original drummer for the Ramones. DeeDee was the original singer, but had problems playing and singing (wart hog is one of those songs). Joey then took vocals and was replaced with Tommy Ramone till Marky came around.
Freese is on a whole other level. As great as they are he's an alien. Known as the Human Metronome, he can play any style with grace and precision and has played for everyone. And still Sting's long time touring drummer.
Brooks Wackerman. That is all.
Both are kinda equal. Both are sorta equal. my fave drummers tho. Well there's a few others but ya know

Putting Freese on this list just shows how completely mediocre most of the other guys on here are. Dave Raun? Bill Stevenson?

Listing Josh Freese as just with The Vandals and using footage like that does absolutely no justice to his name and talent at all. The dude is at a whole level above almost every drummer on this list, and is one of the most solid session drummers of our generation.

Totally agree. Freese is the man. Even on perfect circle records. The very versatile. Astounding. Ramone seemed garbage there.

The first one that came to mind when I saw the title was Brooks Wackerman when he was in Bad Religion.
Bill makes drumming look so easy, never seen a video where he's really breaking a sweat

Honestly super stoked to see Dave Raun on this list. Lagwagon always had solid drummers, and Dave had big shoes to fill once Derrick left the band. Also, I should mention Dave was in RKL for a time, and if anyone knows about RKL. They practically invented the drum sound for every skate-punk band.
Don't forget Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Dave Raun is an absolute beast

Marky Ramone played in a 70s hard rock proto metal band called Dust
I would also include in this list the Dead Kennedys drummer Darren Eric Henley aka D. H. Peligro who sadly passed this year RIP. Also, I would include Devo's drummer aka "The Human Metronome" Alan Myers who also sadly passed away from brain cancer in 2013. Both were "over qualified" to be punk rock band drummers but because of their high caliber performances created both were critical to creating their band's signature sound. Especially after Alan left Devo. For me, Devo's live performances were never the same after Alan left due to health issues and the riggers of touring.
I expected to watch Brooks Wackerman and Tre Cool on this list too.

Dave Raun, Brooks Wackerman, Bobby Schayer, Josh Freese and Erik Sandin are few among my favorites.

From this video I'd definitely stick with Josh Freese and Topper Headon. Both completely different and excellent in their own way.

Best example of of this Mackey from The Cro-Mags that guy had a hell of a style and is one of the best drummers in all of hardcore.

Marky's a solid drummer. It wasn't until I followed him on IG that I realized. His playing is so tight and precise.
He played with Dust, a hard rock band from the 70's. He was 15 years old and already a beast

Stewart Copeland said many years ago that punk drummers/musicians on his scene back in the day despised good musicianship, but after a year of beating on their instruments, they could not help but get a lot better on them.
going on tour really does make you a much better musician whether you like it or not
I really like Travis Barker's constant fills on songs like Lycanthrope. Really adds a flavor to the songs that sets him apart.

I have heard that some Ramones songs actually have difficult hi-hat work. I'm not a drummer so I do not know how true that is, but I'd believe it. A funny thing about music is that sometimes easy-sounding songs are actually trickier than one might think, and sometimes difficult-sounding things are surprisingly easy.
It's not that difficult, it's just really, really fast. Marky played the hihats twice as fast as any other drummer probably would have played it. Sounds awesome!

Listen to Felix griffin from DRI on the Dealing with it album. He was using double bass on hardcore punk before anyone else. That album even inspired dave lombardo of slayer
Now that Lombardo is playing with the Misfits, he should qualify as a punk drummer. He should have been in this video too. hahahaha

I think Brandon Barnes should be on here too. His drumming looks effortless, especially on Rise Againsts early fast albums. Also Byron McMackin from Pennywise is an amazing drummer.

Travis makes a Blink 182. If they didn’t have one of the world’s best drummers none of us would have heard of them
there's a lot of punk fans that would say that they STOPPED listening to Blink 182 starting with the Enema of the State album. Dude Ranch was a really good album, and that was before Tom & Mark could afford to pull Travis Barker from The Aquabats
I think the only time I practiced punk drumming was on stage. I used go add a lot of different elements like reggae and Jazz to a punk band I was in.

not really punk but Fall Out Boy's drummer played with Behemoth during some sort of get together. i can't remember what exactly but goddamn he's good. i was a metal guitarist in a punk band and watching drummers at shows was amazing. they are SO fast and always entertaining
Check out the album “all hail the void” by the band Enabler, I’m not sure if he was in that recording, but he drummed for them when that album was out. He’s insane

He was so good that tony iommi hired him too take the place of bev bevan (of ELO fame) who got shitcanned from black sabbath one show into the Eternal Idol Tour in 1987.
The audio isn't that great but I highly recommend you check out his performances with them from Milan Italy and Essen Germany on that tour.

The quote "rock and roll by people who didn't have very many skills as musicians but still felt the need to express themselves through music" maybe true for everyone else on the stage, but definitively not for the drummers. That needs way more skill than most rock songs.
