    Really crazy! I can relate on a lot of what you’ve said. I’ve invested 10 years into my career, moving up and making as much money as I could for my family. My whole career absolutely fell a part and I was absolutely miserable with the field I was in despite all my “experience.” My wife and I made the decision on me joining. It has been rough because I was 44 pounds over my weight limit. So, I started to work out & eat healthy. Today, I have lost 42 pounds and I’ve already met with my recruiter. Once I get down a few more, I can go to MEPs! I have to say, I am REALLY happy and excited about this decision. I almost joined around 20 years old, never did and regretted it! I’ve always said, I won’t know if I like it if I won’t try but at least I want to say I tried!
    Also, I haven’t told a lot of people about my decision, friends and family. Many of them are critical and I just don’t need that negativity around me. I’ve already heard people talking their crap about me how I won’t succeed or lose the weight to get in and it honestly hurt but I came so far to quit!
    Good luck!

    This was sooo relatable, during High School I always felt empty and lost, with no direction in my life. Failed relationships, bad social anxiety, and crippling laziness (plus the fact that I didn’t want to go to College), I felt like life after High School would stay as bad as life during. But then like you I resolved to make this one decision, the strong decision to enlist in the Air Force. I moved through the process as fast as I could, didn’t procrastinate on things like I usually did, and now am shipping out in two days (October 1st). Thank you for your story, it inspires many who are either waiting to ship out or deciding if they should join. Good luck to you!

    Having served and having watched the mistakes of others I would say DO NOT get married on your first enlistment. Most people get married early in their military careers because they are lonely....and that doesn't end up being a very good reason. There are generally deployments/separations that are hard enough on more established marriages. It's not a coincidence that the divorce rate in the military is pretty high. You don't make a lot of money starting out, you're just getting used to the military environment, there are moves and again, deployments etc....
    The other thing I would tell folks in DEP is to workout....run, swim, do push-ups but do some physical exercise on a regular basis. EVERYTHING is easier if you're in shape. It's one less thing you have to stress about in boot camp which is a stressful enough environment. Learn your General Orders and actually know them. Anything you can do to make basic easier, you should do prior to getting there. The other advice I would give is to save some money. Going out with your friends is great, but if in 4 years you end up having to reenlist because you have nothing to show for the last 4 years you're staying for the wrong reasons and it's going to be a struggle. If you reenlist, do it because you want to, not because you have to because you have no money or prospects waiting. Take every educational course you can, especially if the service you're in is paying for it. Make the most of your time in. We all get 24 hours in our day, but some people get more out of those 24 hours than others. It's up to you.

    • @genewilkerson8528
      @genewilkerson8528 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I got married on my first enlistment and we have been married for over 37 years. 14 of them was while I was in the USAF.

    • @tidefanyankee2428
      @tidefanyankee2428 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@genewilkerson8528 Hey, that's great, kudos to you and your wife, now tell me....would you consider yourself the norm? Some people win the lottery too, but I would hardly call that a wise investment/retirement plan. I would also ask, what was your job in the USAF? I bet you weren't a PJ, or CCT, or TACP. Am I right?
      Are there people who can make it work? YES...absolutely, no doubt....but they are rare if......IF we are playing the odds. Take a look at the divorce rate in American society, then take a look at the divorce rate in the military......enough said.
      You got the "golden ticket" and I'm honestly happy for you.....but let's not act like you and your lovely (I'm sure) wife are the rule rather than the exception.....OK?
      The other thing I would ask is, did you do 20 or more years? If you got married while you were in with 14 of them while you were in the USAF, that means you were probably at least a tech sgt when you got married, which is a far cry from being an E-1, 2 or 3 and being married. I stand by what I said......don't get married on your first enlistment.....for all the reasons I gave.
      I eagerly await your response......and answers to my relevant questions.

    • @30jersey478
      @30jersey478 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sad to say you are right. Good advice. There are a few instances where people get married young and it last, but it's not often.

    • @tidefanyankee2428
      @tidefanyankee2428 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@30jersey478 Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for Gene and his wife, but again what they have is rather rare in the military even under the best of circumstances. Maybe he was one of those guys that didn't or rarely deployed. Having a job in the military that is more of a 9 to 5 like personnel is a FAR cry from being air crew or PJ, CCT, or TACP where you're gone A LOT. The advice I gave isn't exclusive to any one service. You'd be hard pressed to find someone in Army SF, Navy SEALs, or Marine Recon that hasn't experienced divorce.
      Notice he didn't respond.......

      I know this post is 7 months old but I thank you for your service AND advice. I’m writing down the items of importance on what I need to do while I prepare. Hopefully I’ll be finalizing the decision by Christmas. I’ve only told those close to me about joining the military. I haven’t got a recruiter yet but I wanna get myself together before I do that. General orders, working out, and saving money are the big 3 I see from everyone who’s serving or has served. And since I’m seeing and hearing that on repeat, those are highly important. Anything else I should be brushing on?

  • @iNez229
    @iNez229 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Good stuff!
    I’m in the process of enlisting at the age of 27! I wanted to join the military in high school too. I’m not sure what I scored on the ASVAB then, but recruiters came to the school to talk to me about the Officer program. I didn’t do it at the time for religious reasons, but I didn’t realize how much I regretted that until I was approached at my retail job - where I too was a manager - by a Staff Sergeant in the Marines. I was having a conversation with my cashier when they came in. When they stated why they were there, she seemingly walked off (we were finished talking and she’s deaf in one ear). So I said, “You guys should be talking to her; she’s 18.” They said something to the effect of, “We want to talk to you. We only want brave people and she ran away.” I agreed that I would speak to them...reluctantly because I assumed I was “too old” for it now.
    It just so happened that the dates the were already planning on taking a couple of guys to MEPS (in another state, for some reason) fell on days that I was already off! So on December 3rd, I took my ASVAB and physical. It was such a long process.
    Eventually, however, I changed my mind about the Marines and spoke with an AF recruiter - who didn’t seem very enthusiastic about recruiting me - and a Navy recruiter who made me super excited. He had my files transferred from the out-of-state to our local MEPS. Yet again, though, I changed my mind and DECIDED to do the Air Force.
    A few things have held me back a little: attaining another job after leaving the aforementioned one at the beginning of the year, having literally all except one job to choose from, the thought of leaving my mom, etc...I regret letting things get in the way of me pursuing my goal.
    It’s encouraging to see that someone else is or has gone through a similar experience. I am delighted to have found your channel tonight, and I wish you nothing but the best! I will continue following you here until I leave and look you up on Instagram.

      @@Luis-lt2gl Honestly not bad. I joined the Air Guard. Got my Sec+ at tech and a cyber position once a month on base. I used the training to parlay it into a contracting job for a Government organization and I doubled my salary in the past year. No regrets so far. Training during covid was pretty lame, but the few months you spend at basic and tech are miniscule in the grand scheme. If you arent serious about active then definitely join the guard and take up a cyber position, have the AF pay for sec+, get a TS, and move into a really well paying civilian world IT position like I did. IT has great future security and prospects. Good luck!

    • @evancunningham1929
      @evancunningham1929 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ssdaaFaf2 If you’re not serious about active or guard then don’t do it. The guard is still a commitment after you complete training and your drill weekends will fall on weekends when you had plans. I think it’s worth it as it covers all my insurance and if I want to go back to school then it’ll be free. It also got me into IT and now I make 100k doing basic IT infrastructure stuff. I would probably still be making less than 50k if I hadn’t joined. “Not that serious” airmen are more likely to be dirtbag airmen.
      Honestly, part of me wishes I went active duty instead cause the feeling you get when at basic and tech school is like no other if you are engaged in it. It’s practically impossible to transfer to active duty from guard. Having said that, I do make way more money in civilian life.

    This hit me in the FEELS! Because this all sounds so familiar and similar. I’ve never been married or had a boyfriend since high school. But I have been bouncing around in jobs and careers. Dropped out of college 3 times for the main reason of not knowing what I wanted to do at all! and when I did decide the fit still wasn’t right. I’ll be sure by Christmas if I want to really enlist. But foundation work is in progress like health and asvab prep, but I’m worried about meps because I have eczema, but I’ll see what I can do or what my recruiter suggests. I’m excited for the mere interest in joining the military and actually happy that I’m going now than right after high school. I think the decision really sparked when a boss from a previous job and I talked about it. I told her I wanted to go but thanks to life I never did it and now that I want to go I felt I was too old (I’m 27) and she gave me a look and said no you’re not. She was like the cut off age is (I think 36?) but anyway yeah she basically said it’s not too late and if it feels like something you really wanna do, do it. When I get my ship date I’ll have to go visit and thank her. My mother wanted me to go for it too and still does, my grandpa has warmed to the idea now, but then comes the other dilemma other than meps I’m worried about; my grams! My grandmother is really not for it, but I’ve been trying to explain and talk to her about it yet she’s hell bent man lol. She has in her mind you’re going to get shot, and this will happen and that.. yeah goes without saying. I really think the part that she’s irked about the most is that she wouldn’t be able to call or see me anytime she wants to. She didn’t like it when I went to job corp and I know for sure she will raise the dead if I tell her I got a ship date lol. I keep telling her it would make me feel better and improve me as a person, her answer is you can do that here at home. Lol, it’s a battlefield all on its own when you are not only the only child, but also an only grandchild ( I’m the oldest of 3, the other two are 8 and 6 lmao) so yeah Christmas is going to be interesting asf XD

    I am so happy to come across this video because, like you, I am set on joining the Air Force. No matter who tells me or hints that they don't think I should do it or don't think I can do it, I persist. I feel your video shows many parallels with my life. I was also married straight out of High School and was divorced in about the same time as you. I'm 22 now and have my associates degree, but I also feel I had an epiphany about my life. The Air Force feels like where I need to be at this time in my life. I know you're probably in BMT right now, but I want to say good luck! Also, I know you don't need it, but I'm rooting for you! Thank you for putting out a video that makes me feel like I am not alone in my experiences!

    Thank you for sharing your journey. You did the right thing reporting that teacher regardless the outcome. That was not easy and a very brave thing you did. Like you, it was always in the back of my mind to join the military. I should have joined the Air Force in 2012 when I had really wanted to at the time. It's 2019 now, I'm 35 years old and here I am studying the ASVAB to score high to get in. Life is a roller coaster. But we keep going. Thank you for your very encouraging and very informational videos. Appreciate you.

    So encouraging!! I’m 19, I’m going into my first semester of college for my associates degree and I plan on going into the Air Force when I graduate...I was thinking 22 would be “too old to join” but I see a lot of people joining that’s older than that!! Age really doesn’t matter, a lot of people think it does but it doesn’t....ive battled with that but living life and going though different things has really opened my eyes up. Good luck on your journey as an US Airman!!

It’s always been something I’ve wanted to do my dad is marine vet and I have always admired the commitment and determination it takes to be apart of the military. I had something similar. I was suppose to join the Air Force right after high school, but being in a relationship made me think twice about going. It didn't work out, so we split up. Went to school and worked multiple jobs for a few years but didn't feel like I was doing something I wanted to do. So I decided to finally enlist. Now, at 25, I leave for BMT next week (the 13th). I'm excited to leave and I'm excited for you as well! Good luck on your journey! Hopefully we bump into each other at BMT. Lol.

      I am in the enlistment process right now. I am just waiting for my MEPS date. Got a 78 on my ASVAB.
      I currently met someone and became involved and they have been trying to pressure me not to join so that we can be together. This is something that I've always wanted to do, and I don't have time to waste AT 37 Years old.
      So I realized that the relationship was not worth sacrificing my future with the Air Force, so we broke it off, and she still continues to try to guilt me into changing my goals and plans. There is no guarantee our relationship will work out in the long run. Relationships tend to get in the way and deter people from their goals. Don't ever let that happen to you again, stay focused, and follow your dreams and your heart and not someone else's desires and ideas of what they what your life to be like.

    WOW! I can relate to your story on so many levels. I graduated back in 2020 with a degree in Speech Therapy (worked in the schools in FL for about a year) but decided it wasn't for me. I was going to join the Army last summer and backed out due to a variety of reasons. Now I'm about to turn 25 and considering joining the Air Force as I tried to work in therapy once again after considering the Army but was miserable for the 6 months that I did. Hope you're doing well!

      Seems like you have a very similar experience as I do. I graduated from college about six years ago with a teaching degree and it's been a rough ride tbh. After my first full year, I highly considered going into the Air Force, but didn't. Stayed working at that school (wanting to leave the whole time) for a few more years. Left last year and moved to a different state. Was looking for a job and got one as a PE teacher and I realized it's not much different from being a classroom teacher because it's still teaching at the end of the day. My close friend just went into the army and now I'm considering joining the AF again. Did you end up joining the Air Force?

    • @Luisma927
      @Luisma927 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gearmo58 hey, I talked with an AF recruiter and everything but didn’t end up joining. Like you, I also moved out of state (I’m loving my new home) and found a job with the local school district. I’m going back to school part time in January for a Computer Science degree since I’ve been learning to code since last year and decided this is the way to go. How are you liking your new home state?

    • @gearmo58
      @gearmo58 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a smart move you made by going back to school. I've also been told many times by close friends to go back to school for something that I'm way more into. I'm really starting to look into the technology fields because it's something I've always been into. I truly do love the city I live in. If it wasn't for the current job and low pay, I'd be having a much better time.

    First, 26 or 27 is not old! It is a very good age to make a big decision like this. You have some life experiences under your belt which help you figure out what you like and don't like and you've not had to get super serious about career right out of h.s. This is the biggest change I have seen put on young people that they have to dive right into a big time career. I am a boomer and a lot of us didn't get serious until our late 20s. I went back to night school at age 27 when I was truly ready and had a fantastic experience with small classes and super motivated students who were all my age.
    Second, you will learn to become your own person and value yourself and not look to relationships to give your life meaning. There is no substitute for this in life. Life is a "long and winding road" and God is driving the car whether you realize it or not. He puts the people, places, ideas into your life to guide you. I really wanted to get into marketing which was going to be my major and then when I was accepted they dropped that major! I was already working in computers so I said "why not MIS" which turned out to be my true calling and that door opened many many doors to good pay in my life. And I was truly talented at it, but did not know it at the time. Your attention to detail will serve you well in the computer field. Its a good thing I didn't get the major I thought I should have as those majors were a dime a dozen and not as in demand as the computer field was.

I am older though.. but still on time. I really wish I had known this was something I would be considering when I was younger. I would have started sooner. I struggle with that already. And exactly like you I said to myself, It's either now or never! But I am at THAT peak. I turn 35 this year, so.. But like you, I have never been so sure of a decision, and how it makes me feel to potentially accomplish something like this and living it. Nothing neither seems nor feels full-filling to me. There is a lot more but I'm leaving it here. Thank you for sharing. This reminded me of my Why's, and How it makes me feel, truly. And that gives me the confidence and the words when breaking the news to my family. Stay Blessed. And thank you for your Service.

    I was in the process of applying to the Canadian military at 20, but a boyfriend at the time told me he didn't think I should do it so I didn't. (Stupid)
    Now at 31, after trying different careers, single and much wiser, something in me said I still wanted to do this. The desire kind of never left, it was just buried for a long time. So I reapplied (they still had my old test scores from ten years ago, if you can believe lol). I am now almost done and hopefully will be training to be a Medic in the next few months!

    Hello! I'm Brody and this totally speaks to me on a coincidental level. Literally everything your talking about has been my life (or at least the last 4 years or so). I could honestly write a novel but I wouldn't want to put you through something that boring! lol
    I've watched all your videos thus far about the recruiting process all the way to this one and I must say, I admire the hell outta you girl! I go to MEPS in a month and also take the ASVAB the same time. I'm 32 next month so being the "old" man getting enlisted otta be interesting. I'm definitely doing this for myself to further my Nursing career even more ( I'm an LPN right now) so Aero Space Medical Services is what I'm aiming for job wise. The big picture is to become a full blown flight nurse and I dont feel that that's an unrealistic goal. I love nursing and I plan to keep advancing my career as much as possible! I'm like you, all this time something or someone has somewhat held me back from doing this, WELL not anymore! I'll soon be divorced (not proud of that at 31 but life happens). I'm totally ready to rock this journey out and your videos entertain me and make me laugh (especially your MEPS video when they would say "Watcha talkin' bout Willis?" because I would've done the same to you just to pick on you) and give me the motivation I need to make it happen ( my ex wife sure isn't confident in me at all but thats ok. Shes missing out on a great guy :) )
    Keep doing you and keep your eyes on the prize my dear! You seem super smart and knowledge is power in my book! Hope to see some more AF vids in the future. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any additional advise you could toss my way for my up coming trip to MEPS. I do not do social media because its annoying as hell to me, however, my email is (as is) brodyhoard@yahoo.com. Maybe I'll get a reply from you? we shall see! God bless , Brody H.
    PS: Your totally gorgeous and you can have anyone you want so never settle for less than the BEST! I truly mean that :)

    I’m so happy I came across your videos because I can relate to almost everything in this video. out of high school that was my goal to join the military, but my mom got pregnant and other family issues happened and leaving my family was something I wasn’t quite ready for. I went to college got a degree and not really using it. The military had always been on the back of my mind, but like you said right now I’m working two jobs, both retail because it’s my comfort zone. This isnt what I want for myself. I dated this guy for 6months who is in the air force and he recently got orders to spain so it wasn’t going to work out. But dating him has never made me so confident and showing myself that this is what I want. I’ve yet to tell any family or “friends”. I just don’t need the negativity and my friends are showing their true colors so no need to let them know. Also I’m 24 and I felt like I was to old to join, but watching your videos has definitely kept me in high hopes and confident in my decision so thank you!!! 💛

    Lots of people enlist at a later age, not a thing wrong with that. Hope things work out for you in the AF, did you ever decide on a MOS?

    24, wanted to be an interpreter for DoD but a lot of the abroad and immersion courses were cancelled because of covid my last year in uni. Next best option is getting privately certified which I have no idea will even be possible after 4 years of just private study and university teaching because there's a lot to learn. Or I can get certified in the Air Force, actually use my knowledge in the field, and get paid while doing so instead of juggling a job, girlfriend, and constant studying around.

    I'm 26 and have thought about joining since I graduated high school in 2013. I've been happily married to my active duty husband and best friend for 5 years throughout his whole AF career. I always think about joining guard or reserves. I have suffered to find my purpose and meaning in life. Especially while being a spouse stationed overseas. I have no real career or job. I have tried but I fail. I have nothing for myself except for working on my bachelors degree, which I don't know if it will lead to a career. My self esteem is low I feel like a loser while I watch him succeed in life and I go no where. I want to join but suffer from anxiety since I was 12 I don't take meds for it but this is the main thing stoping me from joining. I don't know if I can join because of it or if it's a bad idea and I won't make it through bmt. Please help me with any advice. Thank you!

    I am 26 and have been on the fence of joining since I graduated high school. It’s been a constant back and forth in my mind of „should I do this?“ and I debated on just doing Federal gov‘t work but I feel like with a military background you have a better chance at getting a civil service job afterwards. I currently work retail too after going into failed internships in the legal field and feel like I’m going nowhere with my life. Thanks for sharing your story, it’s inspiring me to at least speak with a recruiter which I’ve always been afraid of doing.

    It's interesting to learn from a women's point of view on joining the US military because I've seen several videos on joining the military later in age, but from a man's point of view. Women have different experiences joining the military than men

    Just stumbled upon your video. Outstanding that you’re finally getting around towards satisfying your quest. Now, the AF is okay among the other military services. Did you look into the U.S. Army? I ask because as a university graduate entering the Army with a bachelors degree, you would’ve enlisted as a E-4. Yup, you would’ve been a junior NCO. So, within your initial 4-year obligation, you would’ve expected to be a E-5 enroute towards E-6 w/o being in the infantry, armor, or air defense. Now, in difficult MOSs (i.e., intelligence analysis, crypto, cyberspace, cyber security, computers, defense analysis, chemical) fast promotions do happen. However, the service member should possess at least a graduate degree (i.e., MA, MS, MPH, MHA, MSIT) especially in a mission specific field. Next, there’s always frocking but the service member doesn’t even receive the pay-grade but only the chevrons. Therefore, I recommend that you search for a viable graduate degree program and let the dice roll. Word of advice...steer clear from for-profit universities because in the short-term they’re okay, but long term after ones military service, a graduate degree from this sort of university can be troublesome. Lastly, but importantly look for guys who are on your educational & SES levels for possible relationships. And marriages among teenager and just turned young adults are difficult in the military. Jealousy and sex on either spouse are some key factors that will impede these types of marriages.

    You were a teacher, a retail manager and then in the air force?!
    I feel like all the stuff that delayed you from getting into the air force in the first place actually makes you even more of a badass.
    I mean, girl, your origin story is more muddled than the Joker's! 🤣
    Fuckin' own it! ✊

    I am an Air Force VietNam vet, my Daughter is also an Air Force Vet. You have to have a plan. My Daughter was extremely successful with her career. She put in her 6 years and is now currently working for the Air Force at the same base she was stationed at making substantially more. She went to College (Free) when she got out. Made good use of her Cyber Security degree. Scoring 60's on ASVAB doesn't leave you with many really good choices. My daughter scored in the 80's before she graduated from High School. But.......... I made her study the ASVAB for 6 months before taking the test. Like you should have done. Now..........my question to you is why the hell did you enlist versus going to Officers candidate school. You earned it. And you should be proud of your choices. It's not for everyone. Good Luck. 1st Lieutenant sounds much better than Sr. Airman. Good Luck.
