Always great info , Thanks. There is a small algae eating fish that is always overlooked. And thats the good old guppy. if acclimated over several days or a week you can turn any guppy into a nano reef fish . They also love cyano ,and dino flagelets to a lesser degree. As well as most others.
I guess im asking the wrong place but does anyone know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Nathanael Bishop I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Had Yellow Coris Wrasse for about one year. Best fish ever! So bright and lively, ate all big amphipods (that used to give me problems) and worms. Adjusted to sleep in crushed coral (thin) and accepted all types of food. Then... he jump out a couple of weeks ago. I have a lid, I knew he's a jumper, but somehow he found a tiny gap between the lid and the glass wall and jumped right through it.
Another excellent video Ryan. Love the Quoy. Really interested to see if you have any trouble with him and the corals. Great choice on all the fish you’ve chosen. And BTW, it was great seeing you(and Randy) this weekend in Orlando. I was serious when I said I believe you have without a doubt in my mind had the biggest impact on this hobby in the last few years. Your dedication to being open and honest about all the products you have used is refreshing and I love you for it. Thank god you exist.
Most reef stores have ich and marine velvet in their tanks and all their tanks are tied to one filter system...so if one tank has it, they all have it.
I have worked with Elliot and he is amazing!!!! If you use him dry using Delta Cargo shipping as a fish can spend less than 12 hours often in transit and will be personally handled not riding on belts and diverters!
Ryan said for smaller tanks it’s best to get the smallest tangs and then trade them in once bigger. What is the minimum tank size for this method? How would you know when it’s time to trade it in?
Definitely get Elliott in! And would love to co Tunis update particularly on the Quoyi Parrot! Will be getting one soon and Elliott might be my source!
I added a UV sterilizer over a year ago. I have a good number of fish and haven't lost a single one since the UV sterilizer was added. I believe it's more than just coincidence.
Mos Def having a proper QT video . It's not done enough, everyone talks about it but not many actually do it to the extent that it needs. There are risks though that the fish may die during the process unless you have a QT system large enough to not stress them out.
I have a “tang gang” (convict, royal blue, sailfin, + a foxface) but they don’t seem to do much, rarely pick at the rocks for algae… is it because maybe I feed them too much nori? Just 1 sheet a day, say 5”x3” on a clip…
At 13:31 on this video, can you give me the name of this parrot fish again please. Also where would you suggest I find one? I have not seen any at my LFS. thanks!
Great video as usual. Do you do any videos in your series where you spend a few minutes going over what's been going on with the actual tanks themselves, maybe I've missed these episodes. Thanks and keep up the great work.
hey Ryan nice to meet you and Randy at RAP this weekend. I have a purple tang in a 40breeder as a holding tank, we just bought a Gem tang that is in our 20 gallon treatment tank. do you guys think I should add another purple to spread the aggression out? or can I add a tomini that will help with aggression. all the tangs will be going into our 180 gallon reef at the same time
Hi BRS, you mention Six Line Wrasse great for Algae control. Is this the same for ALL wrasse types? I would like other wrasse for this reason with unique colours! Just personally the Six Line doesn’t look appealing to me! Any other Wrasse suggestions?
Wrasse are actually carnivores, so algae is not a part of their natural diet. If you're looking for a fish for algae control, a tang is what you're likely looking for.
For a smaller system like that, it would be best to skip the tangs and go a different route. As far as nano-friendly utilitarian creatures go, pincushion or blue tuxedo urchins do a fantastic job. You could also add a few nassarius snails (assuming you have a sandbed) and a few Trochus snails.
What about tank bred specimens? As I’m sure most people who are into this hobby are into it because of the beauty of the natural reef, could you please do a video on the best tank bred fish and corals so that we can make sure we’re enjoying our hobby in the best and most responsible and safe way please? Many thanks
Hey what is that all-white tang at the end? Its like a white yellow tang. Id like one. :) Also hopefully someone can help me, but how many tangs can you put in a 73g tank? Ive been told just 1, but ive seen 2 fullsize before. Not Acanthurus tangs though those are just way to big. Unless...?
Are there any corals that are harmless for humans? I was close to starting up the hobby but found out about all the bad mishaps while people are cleaning the aquarium or moving corals, so I got a lot of second thoughts. Would not risk having a venomous animal in my tank as I read that simply cleaning a filter may make you blind or even kill you.
Hi guys, great video, but one thing I felt you didn’t cover was a problem I am constantly battling, and that’s brown algae on my glass, mainly on the rear and ends of my tank, it seems that I am constantly fighting it, I have tried lowering my lights, turning off whites and just having blues on, feeding the fish less etc. etc. any theories as to what my problem might be ? I would appreciate your thoughts
Great vid. Can you make a five minute video on the zebra tang? 😆 And is that a crosshatch trigger? You have the dream fish tank. Thanks for all the videos and advice. Wouldn’t be in this hobby without your weekly videos.
BulkReefSupplyCom ok thanks, mine has done very well, but I have been told not to keep in a reef tank due to they eat all the good bacteria, which can cause algae issues
I absolutely adore Quoy's parrotfish, but have had poor luck with their survival. Would love to hear any secrets / tips / keys to your success ... and I do wish you deep success!
I have a question. It seems to be a golden rule that you don't want to introduce too much bio load to a new tank. Yet here you suggest that a group of small tangs be added to a tank before you begin the light cycle. Could you offer clarification to this? Thank you
Bioload is all relative to the tank's size, amount of rockwork, and filtration. Adding a couple of tangs to a big 160 gallon display tank is really not too much different than adding a pair of clownfish to a 10-20 gallon nano system.
My experience with buying fish online: Do QT your fish for 90 days before putting them into the tank (do this for local purchases as well). Seems like forever, but if you really want to ensure they are ich free, this is the only way. Do the tank transfer method if you notice your fish have ich (it's pretty obvious) Do buy from live aquaria's divers den. Do not buy from liveaquaria. They're website is great, and divers den is great, but the main store is an LA fish farm that sends you a gamble every time. Not worth it.

The isopods that I'm aware of that do this are about the size of your thumb, I doubt you would find any on smaller aquarium fish, but maybe there are smaller species. Hopefully others will add comments.
Had lawnmower blenny before in my tiny 14 gallons tank - it didn't eat any algae, only pods from it. I recently added very small Scopas Tang to my 20 gallons tank (temporary, until it grows bigger) and he's not eating the algae either - hiding most of the time and eats only nori, attached to the glass. If I don't feed him nori, he gets thinner and thinner for several days, then I give up and give some nori again. I left a huge patch of hair algae in one of the corner hopping he will start munching on it, but he completely ignores it even if I attach his food next to the patch. Is the tang somehow defective or lazy? Or maybe he is too young (very small) and doesn't have the skill? I basically don't see him picking stuff from live rocks at all as all other tangs (primary yellows) do in people's tanks.
I can’t believe u guys have my powder black tang or white cheek tang. I can’t find one for nothing. I will be checking out the vendors u talked about. I wonder how hard are they to keep? Man it will definitely be my show fish. In a 210 how many tangs would u say 7ft long? I have two yellows now.
I put in a few orders with them and saltwaterfish over the years, but only because at the time I didn't have a SW LFS available. Both were really good about honoring their guarantee, but I experienced A LOT of DOAs. I'm from the midwest like BRS. Maybe the extra distance is hard on the fish or something.
Marine Collectors have a great website, however I have tried to email them multiple times about stocking my entire 165 gallon aquarium and they have not responded to either email. Business must be doing well because they a basic email is too much to ask for!
I agree. The stay alive guarantee from live aquaria is a joke. Even with multiple videos in a string of days in a row, they just don’t honor it. Now WWC is the exact opposite. They are fantastic.
Not sure I completely agree with the whole "if you got a small tank, just get a tiny tang and trade it later" first catching a fish in a reef isn't the easiest thing to do, plus the assumption that someone else is going to get you out of your problem later is not the wisest of directions to go. Maybe you do have an awesome store near by that does offer this, but it definitely is something you should inquire about before you go ahead and do it. That said, if you have a 40 gallon tank I think the best mentality to go into things is there simply is no "automated" solution to algae problems, just deal with them manually as they come up, fill your tank with corals so there's no place for algae to live, and you'll do just fine.
Given that you have a billion times my expertise, I am reluctant to criticize you here. However: a fish is almost never the most efficient way to deal with algae. This is because fish are the ultimate algae producer. What else will generate, via ammonia, more nitrates?
Omg, biggest fan. And (2nd comment😀). But I would like to see you do a ZETLIGHT (zp 3600) review for those less fortunate reefers who can’t afford radions or ai etc. thank you
@@timlaw1612 To get them to even reply back to an email is a job in itself. So many of the same horrible reviews. I placed one order with them for a copperband, the day it was to ship out I was told it wasn't eating and they wanted to watch it. 4 days later they said it was ready to go. After it arrived, 24 hrs later in it's own new qt tank this fish broke out with the worst ich case I've seen. It was covered. I was able to cure the ich, and it's now one of my favorite fish. We reached out to bluezoo and after days of waiting for a answer, we received a " well look into it response". We followed up and they emailed back " there was nothing wrong with the fish, it had to be something you did." I've been in this hobby for 5 years now, I have a article published on R2R on venting swim bladders, I performed over 20 of these. I rescue sick fish from Petco stores back to health... But yes it was something I had to have done. My one time and last time ever buying from them.
Very interesting. I have ordered off them for many years and have had only one DOA and I recently had a foxface die within a week and they credited back my account immediately. They emailed me back the same day asked for a pic and then credited my account once and refunded the money the other time. That is a shame you went through that. But after over 40 orders in the past 10ish years I am pleased. I must say I just ordered my first batch of Tangs off of Marine collectors mentioned in the vid. They sound like they (Elliot) has an amazing QT process. I guess we all get different impressions. Thanks for sharing.

Would love to see Elliot on an episode discussing QT and fish disease!! Yes pleas!!!
I'm here for that as well. I have a quarantine setup new in the box at home that I just need more information on before I start using it.

That's actually just a yellow tang with a pigment mutation 🙂

I use UV and Ozone intermittently on my tanks. I don't know for sure if it helps to control algae or pest but it sure hasn't hurt!

That would be a quoyi parrotfish. You may have to ask your LFS to special order as they're not the most common fish.
@@BRStv thank you very much. Do they need a coral reef, like the parrots in Bonaire, or will they be ok in a FOWLR tank? I have a 125.
I haven't had any issues with divers den at live aquaria but only from divers den. Regular website fish have been hit or miss.
Ok BRS, WWC or anyone, please answer to me what the fish is at 2:24 the "white Tang"? that is a gorgeous fish!!!
where can i get one of those????
Firstly thank you for the reply,
That is fantastic, he is beautiful, what and amazing hobby we are in! Keep it up BRS and WWC, you guys are awsome!
I'd like to see a video with Elliot.
would love to see you test adding green spotted puffers for pest control .
Elliot - yes please come on and teach us ;)
Hi Ryan. Love you show.. Yes we would like to see the QT and all process to our fish healthy.
Hi from Indonesia
how should one acclimate corals into the tank when the carbonate hardness of the water is significantly higher (15kdh)?
How is the Sharknose Goby at taking care of parasites (that aren't on fish)?
Definitely want to see that video by Elliot. I spoke with him today. He is going to help me stock my tank!! And i told him to def get that vid made.
What about using mollies for nano tanks? At the moment, I'm using 4 mollies while cycling my 29g tank. I might just keep them for algae control

That's pretty easy, most places will pride themselves on captive bred. If they don't, then I wouldn't chance it, go somewhere else
