    in 30 years of fish keeping I have never quarantined and I never medicate fish , I have found the best treatment for any fish is good water parameters and stress free environment. Most fish diseases are symptomatic of bad parameters and stress and disappear quickly when these two things are covered. ICH white spot and most parasites are always present, bad parameters and stress will compromise the fishes immune system and then they will take hold.

      @chrisopherbove6237 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pp I am p. Senkhuuuio Has morning I gotta this poscrum why ammonium chloride? Why not ammonium nitrate ? Chlorine kills microbes which are bacteria... In sports turf which is my field of expertise we try to stay away from anything with chlorine or chlorides like potassium chloride or ammonium chloride be cause chlorine just kills bacteria (your beneficial and you so do you realize when you dump your ammonium chloride in you are killing all your dr Tim’s live bacteria 🦠. Chlorine kills microbes !!! That’s why I always try to stay away as bad as I can

    • @aerynstormcrow
      @aerynstormcrow 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rush Limbaugh Ammonium Chloride is pure ammonia. Ammonia nitrate isn’t. Also, Dr Tim’s makes the Ammonium Chloride to pair with his One and only bacteria. Chlorine alone will kill bacteria but not ammonium chloride. It’s a different molecule. It’s basic chemistry. Test kits test for ammonium chloride. If you look at any fish less cycling bacteria product. You will see you are supposed to add ammonium chloride to the water until it reaches a certain ppm and then wait for the bacteria to eat it. Once the ammonia level goes down to 0 in 24 hrs your tank is cycled.

    Personally, I always QT fish for minimum 4-6 weeks with some exceptions. I also like to do a Freshwater dip. And I swear by QT'ing them in Microbe Lift Artemiss and Herbtana. Both of these products are reef safe and I've successfully treated my system with them with no ill affects as well. I also like to add powdered ginger and fresh garlic to the thawed/rinsed frozen fish food.

Considering they was first additions, could you not argue that the DT could be classed as a QT if you're holding off further additions for a while? • @dannybski9620
    @dannybski9620 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Adding your first batch of fish doesn't really require QT as there are no other fish to get sick. You could introduce something nasty into your tank but you could treat for it without worry of harming an invert population or anything else.
    However with additional fish adds, I would recommend to anyone watching this to QT a minimum of 2 weeks, better if you can do a full month. If the fish behaves normally and is a good eater, you probably have a healthy fish. Certain fish are more susceptible to ICH than others - I would recommend QT'ing them a full 12 weeks before adding to your tanks. It seems like a long time but really is nothing when compared to how much time you would spend tearing down your tanks & treating for ICH. As someone that has gotten ich from online retailers, and multiple LFS, I am always on the watch out for it becomes pretty easy to recognize over a full length QT. Risk of doing a shorter QT is that the parasite can be hidden from you (eg - in the gills) and a fish that otherwise looks healthy could be a carrier ready to really ruin your day.
    All that said it can a good a idea to try and create a "display" QT tank where it is easy to observe on a regular basis since your fish may be in there for a while :)

I started with dry rock and sand, so no algae/diatoms etc at this point as I've experienced in the past with liverock...I only feed the clowns a pinch of frozen mysis about every other day, so not sure I'm really generating enough "crud" for a clean-up-crew at this point...thoughts?

    I’m not sure if it’s just terrible luck but my flame hawk fish is insanely aggressive, I’ve had this flame hawk for around 6 months .I had one before that around 8 years ago and zero problems with other reef fish . This one killed my black cap bass in under 4 hours of him being in the tank with all the lights off . Is it rare to have one this aggressive ? I’ve never heard of them being this aggressive towards others fish like this .

    So you guys added the fish on week 15? I assume your cycle was done before 15 weeks lol so why did you wait to long?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These videos were released week by week, but a lot of the steps and filming took place much more quickly. Like you said, most tanks won't take nearly that long to cycle.

    I've seen several videos where you keep mentioning Ammonia as the only waste toxic product to be aware of, nitrites are not much of concern?

    • @jcmendez51
      @jcmendez51 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BRStv Yes, that is supossed to happen in the average aquarium, but unfortunately that is not my case. See, I just started this saltwater fish only 5 gal tank on September 15th, two weeks later Ammonia went down to zero and nitrites began to rise, and rise and rise, to this day, API NO2 test kit reads 3ppm in a deep purple color in three times testing. I'm using an undergravel filter with a powerhead (I know, I know but it gave me great results in the past) and a Penguin Biowheel 20. Inside there is two mid pieces of dry rock that I pretend to get live and a Molly fish for cycle, just don't know what can possible be wrong?

    Hi! =) One question, do I need to cycle my quarantine tank? Some say yes others say no. I was thinking of putting a fish into QT while my DT is cycling. For my QT I have bought the Tunze Comline Filter 3162 for filtration, but not sure if that would be enough, or what I can put into the filter bag (i did get some active carbon for it unless I need to medicate).
    Since I'm new to this I want to QT all my fish, so I would probably add one or two creatures every month to my DT, meaning I will have a quarantine tank running at all times. If I need to cycle it first I should get that going now, haha. And do I need to change the water between each fish for quarantine?
    When can I add some clean up crew? Do I need to have had fish for a while first, or can I add a few snails etc with the first fish after the cycle? And do I need to QT the clean up crew? This seemed to be something people had different opinions on, some said no QT needed, others say QT absolutely everything, some say you need to have fish for a while before adding CUC, others say as soon as cycle is done.
    Also Firefish is on my list of critters I want, so after seeing this video I will add it first as well :)

      Thanks for the reply :) I did join ReefCentral, and I've read pretty much every sticky there is, watched this series a few times, and tried my best to learn as much as possible over the last few months. But when I do start threads to ask questions that I cannot find the answer to, I get told to read articles instead of getting answers, so it kinda keeps me away from asking more questions (like last time when I had made a list and researched what kind of critters and corals I would like, all suitable for beginners, and wanted to know if they would all get a long in the long run and in what order they would recommend me introducing them, since I dont want war in my tank, then got told to reasearch what organisms I want and if they are compitable). And to be honest, when there are so much information about so many topics, sumps, quarantine, cycling, curing, medication, diseases, waterchanges, overflow types, filtration, types of corals, dosing, feeding the right diet, different types of lighting for different types of critters, and everything else, I do get overwhelmed at times and I do end up having some questions :) So when I do ask them and get told to read it gets me no where, haha :)

    Hey so I have been in the freshwater side of the hobby for about 4-5 years. I have previously owned countless 30 gallons, a 55 gal and more recently a 125 gallon. Theres a pretty sweet deal on craigslist right now for a 220 gallon with a 55 gallon sump for 600 bucks. Im thinking to sell my 125 and use some extra savings on it. Just wondering what stocking would be good? I definitely
    want a reef with soft and sps, as well as inverts. I want some fish with big personality and not too small although i love clownfish, gobies, dottybacks, etc. I think the reason for this is bc i wanted to switch to salt for
    a while and those are good fish for a small tank. I love to research as it is fun for me to learn so i think i can handle a decent challenge. Any ideas? thanks... sorry for
    being too broad. Lots of fish out there lol
