@@decimustv4257 It's a toss up for sure. If you ever get a chance, he was in a Highway to Heaven episode(A Song of Songs. 1987) as "Gabe Wilson". Such a great episode. I believe the series is on Prime or maybe Tubi? Of course that brings me to Michael Landon and Victor French also. Man, I still miss those guys.

Being a parent is literally the easiest job in the world IF you LOVE your children. The love I have for my wife and daughter can't be faked. It's just there. My daughter asked me one time why I always tell her that I'm proud of her before I tell her that I love her. And I told her "Stella, there's nothing on this Earth you can do to ever make me stop loving you. But pride is earned."

Yeah, and pride is sourced from shame. True humility is the only way through parenthood. Coming to terms that as a parent we cannot know everything, but we must be humble enough to learn.

When i was a kid, i saw my neighbour, shouting “yay daddy’s home” when they father's home. I'm confused, curious, can’t understand why they all so excited when their father coming home. Me and my brother used to hide in our bedroom when our father came back from work, because we all scare of him. 1 day, he shouted our name, calling us out. Asking, “why do you guys run away when i came back?”. We were scared to death, so we lied to him saying we got homework to do. The truth is, he’s a hot headed man, when ever he’s stressed out, coming from work, shouting and calling us out, saying he wants to check our homework. We are not brilliant as he always wanted us to be, our grade are just average, barely get an A-. When he found out our grade, he beat the crap out of us, saying we wasting his money, we're worthless, useless. Like every time we got our results, it feels like death to us. No matter what, i will never do this to my kids, i am my father’s son but i am not him. I don’t want my kids hiding in their bedroom when they knew me coming home.

Same. I remember one time I heard the door opening and I hadn't taken my shoes off and put them away - so I ran to my bedroom with them. He didn't allow me to close my door so I would always hang out in the corner of my room that isn't visible from the angle of the doorway. Anyway, he comes into my room, sees me with my shoes in the carpeted room and gets mad. The thing is - he only ever hit me a few times and it wasn't severe (i.e. with the brush-end of a broom or push me onto a carpeted floor). But the yelling and mocking and verbal abuse was very stressful for a scared little kid.

@@joshitheyoshi2533 i know how that feel, and when my dad hit us, he hit us hard, leaving serious bruises and wound. When we go to school, we are embarrassed to answer to our teaches and friends, they all asking what happened to us. Living under his dictatorship is just so hard, yea we do share some good time but it ain't long, like just a second and then he turned back to his usual hot headed personality. My parent just divorced, which is i think this is the best for all of us, and we don't have to live under his dictatorship anymore. It's been years since the last time we met, and no i don't or ever wanted to meet him again.

One day at my sister's hpuse, I watched it on Hulu and Denzel W had me bawling at the end. I have a family member who is somewhat like this and this movie brought up so much. August Wilson did a magnificent job writing this.

If I ever have a wife and children I will run my ship like a dictator in terms of I have the final word or say so but I will listen to my females opinions. Don't get me wrong, I think a little fear in any relationship is healthy for you. It's lets the other parties know that there are boundries not to be crossed. Weather it be a Parent to child, man to woman in a relationship, boss to worker, sibling to sibling or even friend to friend... but even with that being said I wouldn't want someone to walk on eggshells around me. I used to fight my father when he got drunk. It was a good way to get him away from my mother and sisters and brothers. I am the oldest boy. I'd usually win, I was young, played hockey and highschool football so, the physicality of it wasn't that bad. I really couldn't punch him in the face. So many chances. But I knew my future and that of my mom and siblings would be f*cked if I wailed on him. I remember sitting in an exam in school once...wearing a turtleneck because my throat was bruised. I put down my pen and looked around the gym and wondered how many fellow students had to fight their father ever. Instead of studying for the exam some more...I'm fighting my father...wtf. I always slept with a 2x4 under my bed because on many occasions I woke to him choking me or punching me. My sisters slept with knives. But the really f*cked up part...is that now that I'm older...I look like him. I sometimes catch a glance in the mirror that reminds me of him...and makes me angry. The face I so wanted to pound into the ground. Ahh...such is life I guess...we play the cards we're dealt. I think you become a man when you can take care of yourself, and you don't complain or make any excuses.

Had a friend in school, real nice kid, his mother was single although had a great job and a very respectable woman. This kid hardly was disciplined because him and his mother got along well. Few years down the road she met a ex Marine. Shortly got married, this is when life changed drastically for this kid. His new father only knew how to shout and use a belt. I swear he got a beating daily. Sad part is his other took her new husbands side. She started beating him also. To make a long story short. He finally moved away to another state. Many years later I still think about my friend. I have a better understanding there is a difference between discipline and abuse. Some of us don’t know that difference. Some of use violence to discipline. Does this make you a man? Yes and no, yes if discipline is explained with reason. There is men in prison that will tell you they were beaten as a child. Although never was it explained to them why.

I’m my mom’s son more than I am my fathers. She was a stay at home and was a polar opposite to my dad, pretty much gave me all the good qualities I have in my heart. Now that I’m grown up I listen to my dad much less because I respected him out of fear as a child, I don’t want to be like my dad to my kids, I want them to respect me out of fear of disappointment and not physical consequences. Only time I ever want to get physical with my kids is if they absolutely need it and it’s a final resort. I also want my kids to know I love them without a doubt, I don’t plan on being always soft, but I sure as hell don’t want to be all tough love like my dad’s been to me.

    • @cockoffgewgle4993

So your Dad paid for everything and your Mum had the easy job. You should respect and appreciate your Dad because he likely sacrificed his life to provide for yours, that's what a Father's job is. Times change and change fast, and people are products of their time and environment. Males today are more feminised than ever, and by some margin.
My parents grew up at a time when kids (or rather boys) got caned in School. Violence was normalised. My Mum spanked me a few times as a kid. Because that was the norm, and she grew up in a very rough family. But my sister wouldn't dream of spanking her son and nor would my Mum. Because times are more civilised now.
As for "tough love". I grew up with two quite soft and loving parents, and I'm spoilt and lazy as a consequence.

The tragic thing about this scene is that the way Troy's father treated him when he was a child carried over and he pretty much treated Cory similarly.....later in the film the similar clash between Troy and Cory occured just like when Troy was a child in that Cory was going to leave (like tradition in that family). I hope for Cory's sake he doesn't turn out like his father.

Today too many parents are running away from it altogether. Thus are lost generation full of suicide and depression.

The final time my aul fella took a hand to me was in-front of two of my friends when I was about 12 or 13. I'm certain I'd have taken it again had they not been there, but embarrassment took over the fear and I drove him into the nearest corner and everything stopped from that moment. We've actually been friends ever since, and I think he realised he had simply become someone he never intended to be. He's had my back ever since.

I heard a similar tale from a friend of mine. Her father propositioned his own teen son's gf. He essentially told her: my son's just a pup, he's got no money, no job, no nothing. Im an accoplished man, be my woman instead. And before you ask, yes, he obviously cheated on his wife a lot. It was when I heard that story that I realized how rare my own happy family was.

My father and mother were parents of 4 kids. Father was sole income earner and didn't make much. Mother was sole over-time parent and working side gigs to make ends meet. There was no time for love. They kept us fed, sheltered, and healthy. This is the reality for many kids. Everyone saying Denzel was abusive has no F-ing idea what a tough life is. What poverty causes. My parents loved us more than any parents can ever love their kids cause they were killing themselves to keep us fed.

But I knew tougher kids with tougher old mans and they were still better men at the core; wouldn't be as low down as this one. If not just for fear of the charges and sense of morality, but they would drop you harder than a sack of bricks if you tested them. You never felt the Earth like that.
