For this episode, the remainder of season 1 and slightly after, the order of episodes we recorded was weird. HBO Max (or "Max" as the kids say) listed the episodes in order of release date, not canonical order. Because of this, the episodes that are titled are in order of release date - not in order of cannon. We weren't expecting the streaming service to have a wonky order and would have preferred to cover the episodes canonically, but we're here and at least watching the episodes the way fans would have seen them as they aired. So Technically Episode "46" that we react to here is canonically episode 50 "The Message". Now that we're all up to speed on our episode order -Steven Universe Season 1 Episodes 45 "Roses Scabbard" and 46 (or 50) "The Message"! HEAVY LORE DROPS?! Rose, Homeworld, Pearl, Audio Daddio, Lapis, and more in this incredible set of episodes~

One thing that's really cool: when Pearl tells Steven a story at the end of "Rose's Scabbard" while holding the flag, she has real dialogue. She says, "...and out of nowhere, when it seemed impossible, Rose charged in with me by her side!" And if you look, the lipsyncing matches up with this perfectly. Rebecca Sugar, the creator of the show, confirmed this.
I never noticed that juxtaposition between her carrying him up that cliff and her later neglecting to save him when he was in danger. Crazy
I realized this when I first saw it & its undeniable evidence showing at least Pearl is not a perfect parental figure we were presented to before.

This is also maybe a slight nod to stevens future float powers and how its activated by emotions.

So much in Rose's Scabbard hits different on a rewatch. Even Steven's sudden drop mid-jump when he sees Pearl's face means something different (or maybe just magnified) by early Season 3.
It seems like silly cartoon logic, much like any early strength or durability Steven shows, and then it's later explained 😂
While this is coming out, people would complain that there were so many "filler" episodes, but every one of those episodes had call backs later on that related to the plot.
It's got to be so hard though to be Lu, because on a rewatch, things that Pearl (and the other gems) do and react when certain things are happening or being said hit way harder when you know why. Lu, you should hit up the spoiler chat more often. lol. Let it all out where Alec won't see it.
Yes, Pearl didn't save Steven, BUT! She made sure he grabbed onto something before looking away. I'm sure if he actually continued to fall, she'd save him
I appreciate the benefit of the doubt, but if he hadn't gotten a hold on the island, I don't think she could have saved him either. And if he had grabbed the island and lost his grip after she stopped looking, she probably wouldn't hear him.
I always tear up when Steven says "I think you're pretty great".
And Pearl did say the signal the wailling stone was receiving might be too advanced for it to process correctly, and it was.
Wait I just realized something in Rose's Scarrab, spoilers for way in the future
When Steven was making the jump to the rock Pearl was on, notice how the second Pearl turns around and Steven's expression changes, he begins falling. Do you think he was unknowingly using his floating powers. That literally has to be the case it even plays a gem noise when he begins falling. God I love this show so much.

I've said it before elsewhere, but one of the things that SU pulls off better than almost any other series is nonchalant drops. They'll have this random episode that starts off goofy or weird or whatever, and they just kinda drop a bomb and walk away. Whether it's massive backstory points, things that totally change how you look at a character, or new forms, they'll just have these huge things happen without comment.
45 is definitely a key episode to rewatch after the show; the context makes things absolutely fascinating.
edit: Sound that drives me crazy: the high-pitched whine some TVs give off. It hurts my teeth and makes me anxious.

We've actually seen the Wailing Stone before. The Gems retrieved it way back in "Rose's Room". Amethyst played it and it broke Steven's TV.

Not only are you guys really comforting to watch =, seeing you enjoy a show while also figuring it out yourself. Honestly your dynamic feels like a sort of safe space for me as a queer person.

I've seen the entirety of this franchise so I know EXACTLY the things Pearl is referring to... and on my rewatch, this knowledge only makes this line and many more moments with her THAT MUCH MORE PAINFUL, it's AGONIZING AUGHHHHH!
One of my favourite parts of season one. Love seeing these characters develop

Rose's Scabbard is definitely my favorite episode of season 1, been waiting for you guys to get there. That line from Steven when he hugs Pearl always gets me, instant tears.

Be sure not to forget to watch the mini episodes in the correct order along with the extended opening theme for season 2 (you can find the order on the wiki page). The character depth for this show is insane.
Rebecca Sugar created charts that kept track of the plotlines and characters right through to the end of the series, which is why the show is particularly good with continuity. This was even lampshaded by Steven's "My mind is the internet: I know every continuity mistake ever made on television".
The high fantasy of this show was never a draw for me. The emotional connections is what really held me onto this show and it all began with Pearl. Once Pearl's character arc completed and the mysterey reveal my interest in the show waned, but I did finish the serries.

Okay so Pearl called the sword a straight edged saber, which is an oxymoron. Sabers are European curved swords, popular around Renaissance times and long after until the World Wars. If it’s not curved it’s not a saber. It’s more of a broad sword than anything.

Rose's Scabbard is such an interesting episode, it's one of the best in the early series and gives a glimpse at the complex emotions underneath the service... But, at the same time, having seen all of Steven Universe, I can't help but feel like some of that depth and complexity was missing later on in the show. I love this series, but I was definitely disappointed in how it handled things at the end, and seeing how good it was early on is a bit sad.
Oh man, if you liked the callbacks in these episodes, you have to keep watching. I still don't understand how this show got made on Cartoon Network.

Where'd you get this listing for the episode order? "The message" should be episode 50 not 46... if I'm remembering episode is called "open book"
This was the order Cartoon Network created for the first "Stevenbomb" (a new episode every day Mon-Fri for a week) that concluded season 1. This tightened and built up the tension of the plot that followed Marble Madness that would have otherwise been dissipated by the stories that were pushed into season two.
Wow is season 1 going to end soon? Well I guess season 2 is in space.
