I love your work Tarekith. You're music always sounds so complete and is actually musical (not just randomly arpeggiated crap)! It's especially cool for me to see you using an OT, now that I own one too, and I appreciate that you list how you have your tracks set up on your OT. Looking forward to more insightful videos from you, good sir!
+Mark GP Atherton Thanks Mark, that means a lot. I'd be making this music no matter what, but it certainly makes it feel a bit more appreciated when people reach out like this. :)
Damn this must be my favourite live set with octatrack. So many different ambiences and all fit perfectly. I was looking for tutorials for my new machine and now I cant stop listening to this :D
Tarekith, I'm so happy you decided to give the OT another chance. You helped me a lot in my journey trough learning process at the beginning. I still use your transition trick to this day. ;) beautiful music mate!
tarekith 2 years later I know, but any way you could direct me to this transition trick? Just getting into the world of Elektron. Great sounds mate. Cheers! Edit: Found it! Thanks for the quality content brotha. Also if that first track is released anywhere let me know! Would love to have it(:
i wanted to thank you, tarekith, too :) you helped me years ago to really get into the machinedrum. a few days ago i had the opportunity to finally get an OT :) thanks in advance for helping understand the OT :D
I do some work in Adobe Illustrator while listening to this.. Very tasteful and musical. Skillfully and thoroughly arranged. This is for audio gourmets.
This video gives me hope. I got an Octatrack to try and get away from using my laptop to sync my hardware synths and modular. To be honest, I've been very frustrated with navigating all the menus etc. But seeing what it can do helps me to remember why I bought it. Thanks and great set.
Excellent set and great to hear elements of your previous moody work woven in there. I thoroughly recommend fellow listeners make the effort to try the high quality version - you'll really appreciate the superb D/A converters of the Lynx Hilo unit.
+tarekith Not cheap but, in your line of work, I expect it's worth every cent. Thanks for the useful information you've provided in various electronic music forums, too. As someone starting out, I notice your name frequently alongside pragmatic, well-informed posts.
awesome set tarekith!! great music! and glad that you're back on the Octa :D Currently I'm also going deeper on the octa and looking forward to playing dj-sets and live sets with it only! Cheers and enjoy your beast :)
+Amer Trnovac have you already used the Electribe with the Octa. I was thinking about getting one and pairing them up, would make a nice combo I think.
+Amer Trnovac To be honest I'm trying to sell the electribe. Not a bad box, but the Circuit is more fun for me so I'm putting my efforts with that one.
+tarekith oh, that's interesting. I was thinking about the circuit but the "no display thing" is quite a put-off for me. And it has only 6 parts, so I thought the electribe would be more powerful in combo with the OT. Thanks for the info. Gotta investigate the circuit some more :)
Great stuff mate! I am jamming with my Octatrack a lot lately and your transition trick is great and I'm probably going to borrow that from you ;) Liked and subscribed ! Keep up the good work. Cheers!
Superb!!! Just listened to.the mix on soundcloud at work...very skilled...looking at this machine for my live sets currently using electribe 2 but only one output. Lets have another OT mix dude🤙🤘🏼🤖
Little MonoLink in there....interested in what you specifically loop and the reasoning...in your approach how you loop what..types of sounds when for what.....thanks man!
So, like me, you have a Circuit, an OP-1, and a few other things I don't (Electribe) that can theoretically make "full tracks". Do you find yourself spending time with them individually, or do you bring them together often? I desperately want an Octatrack, but I'm almost worried I'll neglect my other gear at that point. Do you feel you have too many options or that the Octatrack renders other gear obsolete? GREAT SET BTW.
Jeremy Leaird-Koch I typically use them standalone, just the way my brain thinks trying to get the most out of them individually. The OT is the one thing I sometimes add, just because being a sampler it makes transitions between songs a lot easier on gear that doesn't easily do this. The OT definitely fills a lot of rolls for me; looper, effects, simple mixer, sampler, stem player, etc. So yes it fills a few different roles in my sets that would otherwise take multiple bits of gear. Just deciding WHAT I want it to do is the hard part. :)
***** "just the way my brain thinks trying to get the most out of them individually." - yep, I feel this too. The OT is exciting because it feels like the last sampler I would really ever need, and I LOVE sampling. Since it has audio ins, could you theoretically use it as a mixer to bring, let's say, the Circuit in, with clock from the OT, and have only one thing to monitor but a bunch of stuff to play with?
Jeremy Leaird-Koch sure, you could definitely do that. One of the downsides of it for me is that to use it for resampling the way I do, I lose two of the 8 tracks right off the bat as master and recorder tracks. But still, powerful little box.
I would highly recommend trying to think of hwo you would use it if you did get one, and then going through the manual to figure out how it would be done. Or if you're even able to. I think a lot of people get the OT hearing how cool it is, but they don't have a plan for putting it to use. It does so many different things, that there's no ONE workflow to learn. So people find it difficult to grasp without having a plan to use it for first. Just my $0.02. Good luck!
Good job! I have been lusting for a Octa. from your other videos I see that you use a Maschine as well. How do you think having both works? I am a bit afraid that they do similar things, but perhaps that is not the case?
They can certainly cover the same roles in a lot of ways if you want. But for me Maschine is usually better at creating the material and the OT is better for performing it. Using the OT as a standalone groove box for making music is definitely doable, but I find it a little tedious compared to Maschine. Likewise Maschine does a decent job at performance duties, but I'm always having to watch CPU useage which can be difficult in larger sets.
Thanks for the response :) I think I have come to the same conclusion. I want a Octa, seems like fun, but I do think I might get frustrated with it being a lot slower than the Maschine workflow.
tarekith It is impressive how close your thinking process is to mine. In fact it's not close, it's the same. Let's talk in private if you feel you're in the mood to, I'm easily catchable.
No time to do a video of it, but here are some walkthrough in written form: innerportalstudio.com/three-by-eight-octatrack-live-set/ innerportalstudio.com/elektron-live-pa-rundown/
Something I'm always curious about with OT workflows: How do you keep from making permanent changes while tweaking? It seems like it autosaves a lot of stuff, which can wreak havoc on returning to a clean starting point? Do you make a copy of the project and only perform with the copy? I'm always really paranoid when I get inspired to jam on some old patterns that I will wreck them.
The OT has two save states, the ongoing sync to card, and a manual project save. The manual project save you can reload at any time to get back to that saved state, so I have my performance template saved that way. I just reload the save before I start a new set.
+tarekith Ah ok. I bet my problem with doing it that way in the past was related to the fact that I didn't fully get parts yet. I probably was not saving my parts.
Kind of a conundrum actually. I think Machine is easier to set up and get ideas started by far, there's just so much good content there ready for you that comes with it. But the Octatrack feels more like an instrument when it comes to performing. Not everything is easy or how you'd ideally do it, but it lets you do some cool ideas too.
@@tarekith I see, I prefer gear that feels more like an instrument, so I think I'd choose an Octatrack over Maschine because of this. My favourite electronic instrument for performance is the Analog Rytm (I have the MkII). I'd love if they released and Octatrack MkIII with pads like on the Rytm and also with performance and scene mode like the Rytm. The combination of these and the OT scenes slider would make a great hands on gestural performance instrument. For example, imagine pushing different sides of a pad in performance mode while moving the scenes slider at the same time to affect a long stereo sample in different ways.
I'm thinking about it as a way to simply get samples and loops into my music without the fuss of timestretching hassles etc. Can the OT also trigger external gear?
+2010MrWhitewolf Yes, it's got an 8 track MIDI sequencer built in that's really nice. The OT is great for loops and the like, but there is some set up involved that takes some getting used to. IT's not that bad though, great bit of gear.
hi!!! nice set!! how do you make that "cross fader" effect ... when you keep looping the last song in the scene b, then in the scene 1 you have the next song .. please help me!!!!
+2010MrWhitewolf It's not hard per se, there's just so many different ways of using it that people don't know where to start. If you have a clear idea of what you want it for, it helps a lot to get you started and used to the way it works.
So nice. :) Can I ask you; I'm considering an OT for live mangling of our main mix (so main mix goes into OT, where I can mangle it and feed it back into the FOH mix). Would it work well for this, in your experience?
Sweet! Really diverse range of sounds and very coherent altogether :) Just a question re your organization. You fit a bunch of tracks in that set! Just wondering how you laid it out? You said you used stems from your pre produced work, so I am assuming you have a few patterns per track with just those loops that you then manipulate? And I guess muted etc. Also, is it possible to set up the OT so that if you have say a reverb tail on a sound and switch to a new pattern / part, that the tail doesn’t cut off? Makes transitioning really difficult to coordinate smoothly. Thanks for all the tutorials and documentation you provide online by the way. Super, super helpful!
Each "song" in the set is made up of one Part and one Pattern, and then I use muting and effects to define the arrangement on the fly. Tracks 1-6 are the stems from my songs, Track 7 is a recorder for the "transition trick", and Track 8 is set to be a Master Track. If you use the same effects on each part, the reverb tails won't be cut off when you switch parts. I don't know any other way around this though. Good luck!
Excellent set! I'm still thinking about taking the plunge with the OT. Seeing put to such great use is leading me closer to the jump. Do you find it enjoyable to work with? How about flexibility? Do you use it to work with stems, compose from scratch, and sequence external gear? I know it's technically very versatile but I'm wondering if practically it tends to be better at some things rather than others.
+Daymon Kiliman yes it's enjoyable to work with, though at the same time I find it easy for me to adapt to what it is instead of trying to make it something it's not. It's not complex so much as open ended, if you find a work flow that fits your needs, nothing else touches it.
glad you're back! :D I have a question, if you don't mind: if you have a rec trig always recording in the background, wouldn't you have issues when moving to the crossfader to the right, when the rec trig gets "run by" again? I tried using the resampling transition trick a few times, but it always ended up beeing a bit stressing for me... maybe because I had to remember to activate the rec trig, and I would also tend to filter / manipulate the buffer recording... wich is tempting and a lot of fun, but if you forget to "reset" the effects before reaching the next transition... you end up doing a mess... I guess it's better if you keep the transitions simple (just XVOL transition)
I love the fact that the rec trig is always recording and updating every 4 bars myself. It means that no matter what I can instantly switch to the sampled loop and have almost perfect continuity from the "live" audio I was tweaking. Since it's post master, the effects carry over into the transition too.
what I mean is... you don't need to ever disable the rec trig once you're listening to the loop? having it always running would be a lot easier, it makes me want to give it another try :P transitioning is indeed one of the most painful parts of performing live... I've tried quite a few things (KaossPad 3 - when I had it, Soundbite Micro (great, but works with audio-detect BPM, so there's a risk of drifting; and lately, Loopy HD on an iphone..) I've been trying a few new options, since I got an Analog Four and I'm trying new setups... one of those is using an iPad for compression / send FX (cue out) and maybe also for transitions (Loopy HD is an option, I also realise that I could do it with Samplr, while also having many other tracks for experimentation, adding details, etc) but I must admit watching your video makes me want to go hardware only (OT/A4), and do an effort to mix/export the stuff from the computer into OT... :P
also.... having it constantly sampling the ouput (I guess you mean T8?) when you move on to another pattern/song... wouldn't the rec buffer be overwritten by the rec trig on pattern 2? how do you avoid this?
Yeah, I just let the recording trigger always stay on nowadays. I used to arm it manually when I was ready to transition, but this way opens up a lot of fun xfader tricks and what not too. Good luck, remember to have fun!
but how do you avoid the recorded loop to be overwritten as soon as you change patterns? assuming you also have a recording trigger recording at all times in that following track
Nice Work! I wander about track 7. I am assuming you are using a flex machine set to recording 7. then, how do you switch from your actual track to the recording? using scenes?
Yes, using scenes, but not a flex track. It's often referred to as the "transition trick" on the elektron forums. Here's more info on it: th-cam.com/video/uAD1MzZgsMM/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/f1D_UurOook/w-d-xo.html

also.... having it constantly sampling the ouput (I guess you mean T8?) when you move on to another pattern/song... wouldn't the rec buffer be overwritten by the rec trig on pattern 2? how do you avoid this?
Here's more info on it:

What about those reliability issues? Can you elaborate?
I'm eyeing some Elektron products, so I kinda need to know beforehand :-)
nice:)
This good old kuality/........
Thanks
Thanks!
what were the reliability issues you had with the OT ?
Some of the pins in the built in CF card reader broke off in one of my cards while I was ejecting it. Elektron refused to warranty it.
top trip
made me "google earth" the globe for almost an hour when I was supposed to be working :) thans for a journey
Nice, glad you got some global exploring in! :)
haha, Yes, I have been wandering around curvy roads of Finland :)
my last comment was bad taste in judgement. you kind of have this dj icey vibe, do you know who that is?
Old school florida breaks DJ? Seen him a few times actually, think I might even have one of his old Moonshine mix CDs too...
