  • By popular demand, how to record your gear using a reel to reel tape machine.
    A breakdown:
    -Synthesizer output is plugged into stereo input on the tape machine
    -Before recording I adjusted the monitor levels
    -Then, recorded by holding the record button and twisting the lever to record
    -Once I finish my recording I can twist the lever back to the default position or switch to forward for playback
    -the output of the tape machine is going into one of my audio interface's channels for playback and recording into my DAW
    -Again, after I record into the tape machine I have to then record it into my DAW and I do that by playing it and then recording on a channel in my DAW.

    My grandfather had an Akai reel to reel when I was younger, like 30 years ago now. I remember listening to Richard Wagner's Ring of Nibelung, Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene and Vengelis' Blade Runner to name my favourites. He mostly recorded vinyls on to the reel to reel. Eventually he sold all of it yet made a profit. This ultimately influenced my taste in music. Not bad for someone who literally grew up in the same time frame and area of the Peaky Blinders.

    I'd love to see a comparison with the digital vs. tape (reel to reel). I still haven't gotten to do my own comparison as I'm still tracking down reel to teels and proper cassette recorders. Great video!

      Get a mixer then sound audio out into your tape machine

  • @Garygrayhair
    @Garygrayhair หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey, I know this is an older video but still really useful for someone wanting to get into this. Super beginner question that I'm having a hard time finding online: is there a difference between routing your instruments/mics directly into the deck and then outputting the deck to a mixer versus instruments/mics into mixer >> deck? I've heard people say most people do it through mixer first and I was unsure about the flexibility of the mix if you plug everything directly into deck first.

    • @Tiger.Arcade
      @Tiger.Arcade  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It would be better to do the mixer first I’m sure since you’d get better control over your sound levels and EQ.

  • @daniel_mana

    sounds good man. are all the moogs going through a mixer before the tape recorder?

    • @Tiger.Arcade

      No actually. Just being fed into the matriarch and directly into the tape machine

    Hey! Can you explain to me how you're routing the inputs and outpouts to and from your interface (I'm trying to record on my DAW, but whenever I plug the rca line outputs into my interface, everything just explodes in a huge feedback). I want to re-record something I've already recorded on my DAW to the tape reel, and have it come back to the DAW to get the rawness of the tape. Much appreciated, thanks!!!!

      U ever figure this out

    • @Tiger.Arcade
      @Tiger.Arcade  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I should do another video explaining how to record a reel to reel to your DAW and vid versa.
      I used the line output of my reel to reel and plugged it into one of the channels on my audio interface. I then monitor on my DAW.
      You might be getting a feedback since you have a full circle thing going on.
      If you’re trying to record DAW material to your tape machine try the output on your audio interface or headphone output and then feed that into the inputs. Experiment with which one makes sense on the reel to reel. Sometimes the mic inputs are best since you can dial the gain on them.
      But just make sure you’re only doing one method at a time. Hope this helps. ✌️

    👋🏽 hey, For some reason my teach a2300 sx is coming back in mono and I can’t figure out why. Was wonder If using Male TRS to 2 RCA Phono Male Stereo Y Insert Splitter instead of Dual TS to Dual RCA Stereo is the problem. In thoughts would deeply appreciate it.

    • @xisotopex
      @xisotopex 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      are you sure it is capable of this? it might only be able to record 4 single mono tracks? you cannot record a stereo track on one track, you have to have a head that is capable of recording on two tracks simultaneously... some machines can record stereo tracks, but its just 2 tracks in one direction....

      Just plug it into the microphone jack input or rca input. They typically have one of those.

    Now what brings this, you wasch the Audio signal through the magnetic tape machine, and thats all? But btw did you record over an old recording or did you buy a new tape? Is it useful to record nö signal before recording a new Signal on it? I remember my tapedeck, when I re-recorded I often heard the prevous recorded music when at Low levels. I use my r2r just for mastering finished music, this brings some mojo 😇and voodoo into your music. 😅But the truth is, these machines are fascinating while beeing obsolet, but I 🥰them althrough...

  • @ThePickledOnion
    @ThePickledOnion ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Aren’t you risking damaging the machine by plugging your instruments into the mic input? Are they not coming in too hot?
    I’ve just got a R2R and I wanna do this but from what I’ve read it’s best to only use the mic-in for microphones as it can only handle very low level currents

    • @Tiger.Arcade
      @Tiger.Arcade  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not have an issue. I just lowered the volume on my instruments or interface.

    • @JamesSClapperton
      @JamesSClapperton ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThePickledOnion definitely a fragile input. They make cool converters the step line level back down to either mic or even pedal level. I want one so I can send my pedals straight into my lunchbox style preamps and crush the hell out of the signal. But yeah, I wouldn’t advise this without conversion. It may work for a while, but you’re hammering that input and parts/fixing these isn’t easy! Good luck.

      Is it a lever or a button? You may need to remove the faceplate to inspect if it’s stuck or if something broke. May need to be cleaned up from debris collection over the years too. A wire could’ve become disconnected as well. A common issue with reel to reels as they age is the belts wear out and they need to be replaced. Hope all this helps troubleshoot the issue.
