      That’s basically where I’m at too. Does the DJI O3 look better than all the other systems? Sure - as long as you have enough light (if/until they update that). But if, like me, you’re either going to fly with a GoPro or no action camera anyway (that’s exclusively how I fly. I don’t have any situations personally where I want to fly something smaller but still have high quality footage), I don’t think the O3 system actually brings anything compelling to the table. All of the digital systems (DJI OG, DJI O3, Walksnail, HDZero) give enough resolution/fidelity to see scraggle and small objects from far enough away to react, which was (for me at least) the main downfall of analog - though I do still fly analog quite a bit. Because of that, the added expense of the O3 system just isn’t worth it/I don’t think DJI actually cares about the FPV hobbyists. They seem to only care about the professional market (which makes sense, as I’m sure that’s where they sell the most units). Additionally, I’m not actually convinced that FatShark cares about the wants and needs of the community, as historically they have really only added features to their goggles as a reaction to other players in the market (power buttons/fully powered OLEDs, etc.) HDZero, by contrast has put in an immense amount of effort with their goggles to meet the needs/wants of virtually the entire FPV community that has an interest in their system. Fully integrated HDZero that doesn’t have the 1 frame of additional latency that HDMI does - check. Analog integration with full low-latency de-interlacing for higher quality - check. To knowledge, HDZero is the only digital system that won’t have the additional frame of latency between the receiver and the screens, which is amazingly cool. Additionally, de-interlaced analog is a first as far as I know. Oh, and they have a hardware power switch instead of a software button (also a first, though the significance of that is somewhat debatable). It just seems to me that in terms of video systems right now, HDZero just gets a lot right. I am definitely waiting to see where the Walksnail system goes, but the lack of any video input on the current goggles is just a complete dealbreaker for me.

      Considering the image quality is marginally better than the V1. Everything else are negatives for me. It’s bigger and heavier, uses more energy, doesn’t perform good in low light, and it’s reliability needs to be proven. Plus GoPros image quality is better IMO

    A larger sensor doesn't necessary produce better low-light performance... it's more about pixel size. The O3 has a 48 megapixel sensor which means the individual pixels are *very* small and thus receive less light than in larger pixel sensors. This could account for its lower low-light performance when compared to the original.

    • @rowannadon7668
      @rowannadon7668 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some cameras also do “pixel binning” which basically produces a 12MP image and averages the value for each pixel across four pixels, not sure if O3 is doing that

    I’m trying to get into FPV. I only have a tx16s and been practicing on the sim. I think your way of explaining and teaching would be perfect for a beginners guide into FOV components. It can be very demotivating to get into Fpv when building one is so difficult to understand all the parts and comparability. And some people like me want to build not buy a Bind and fly. What makes a good urban drone, a park flyer or a long range drone? What parts go with what? These basic questions are what puts noobs into a purchasing paralysis and sometimes never end up doing more than buying a simulator game. Your style of teaching could help allot of people out and get more into the sport.

    Excellent test, thanks!!!
    Having v2 and Scout HD’s, my thoughts at this time are;
    1. DJI - might try out the O3, but seriously concerned about the heat. I’ll give it time and see how that works out.
    The new goggles,,, not really that interested as I really hate latency.
    2. HDZero - it’s ability to manage low light when transitioning from bright is fantastic, and I find shadow detail on par with anything.
    You loose some quality, but where it truly shines is the very low fixed latency.
    It’s ability to play nice with others is a plus!
    Give 😂Carl some time, he’s already working on 1080p. After he’s done with the goggle release he’s going to want to fill his free time!

      I started my fpv journey this past autumn, with DJI v2 & Air Units/Vista. It's been a great start, and I am happy I started where I did. But I am now looking at starting an analog build, and HD Zero looks to be the place to begin that next step in my systems set-ups. There is so much competition in the market, right now. I will wait until around early summer of 2023 to see how everyone develops, but HD Zero's open-source attitude is the icing on the cake. Can't wait to see what else comes around the corner, both with manufacture's development, and the open-source community!

      Running with the V2 goggles you can choose 810p at 120 FPS and get the same low latency as the OG DJI Air Unit. The latency is connected to the framerate, so at 100 FPS the Goggles 2 have slightly higher latency by nature. What I don't like on the O3 is the detail in dark areas compared to the OG Air Unit and that recording settings are linked to the settings you fly with. It's quite limiting

The time to first bright pixels seem to match up but the DJI V1 120fps seems to be the first to bright frame at 21 or 22ms since pixel and frame seem to occur at the same time. Thanks, Chris. I haven't been able to get clarification on how to force the "low latency" mode on the O3 Air. It's not very clear in the documentation and I suspected that low latency mode wasn't possible in the 4k modes. Thanks for making that clear!

    The new goggles 2 and the new air unit v3 all remind me off the first attempt at dji fpv with the dji race goggles ( the very first box goggle white and the gray set they had anologe built in with the gray set ) the latency is from 40 to 50 ml sec. When the first system came out the FPV community said that 40 to 50 ml sec was to much to fly fpv. I fly the goggles v1 and v2 not the box style any more and can't see me going backwards for the new goggles 2.

    HDZero definitely had more detail in the shadows compared to all the others. The Media Offline flashing made it difficult to make a fair comparison. Both dji systems suffer in the shadows, but the Action 2 does as well, so I’m not surprised. I’ll enjoy flying without the extra weight of a action cam and hence, the added flight time without the extra weight. I look forward to the updated camera mounts of the AOS5 v1 and the 3.5 v2. Great review also.

    finally, properly indeepth analysis! I've been scouting interwebs for just this, MEGA THANKS! Question: how 4k-60fps onboard recording affects the preceived latency when you actually fly the drone while recording, is this clearly noticeable to the point that you kinda have to make tough decision - when to record and when to not record and to just enjoy flight?

    • @ChrisRosser
      @ChrisRosser  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on your flying style. It is not noticeable for smooth cinematic flight but is noticeable (but not deal-breaking) for faster more agressive flying.

  • @pirchoo

    I think they did not really nailed what they were after. They focused on Image quality for what? The answer would be to replace additional action cameras, but this is just not good enough, it does not meet production standards and if you are a movie maker, you dont want auto exposure for capture, but you want that to see obstacles. I just can't use it on my beater quad, as I need fast feedback in bandos too. Could be good for live broadcast, but... oh they forgot again to add a HDMI or anything. So who were they listen to? What is the target audience? ...is it like Cyberpunk 2077 so it will be useable a year later?

    Great content! I was wondering but now know! Comparing the images, even before knowing what was.what, hdzero had my vote. It might sound odd for most: Very apparent lower pixel resolution but color and contrast was what hit me. I found it much easier and faster for me to identify objects and flight paths and gaps, in daytime first and then more evidently on night time. This video has me all settled on that matter now thanks to you! Very grateful thanks 🙏

    6:29 I preferred the DJI V1 (close second with the O3) until the low light tests 9:05, then I preferred the HD Zero 9:27. I like the contrast of the WS Avatar as it looks more filmic or better exposed but also lacks the dynamic range of the others. 8:35 The DJI O3 was really slow at adjusting iso for the switch from dark to bright environment.

  • @twinturbostang
    @twinturbostang ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting. My first impression was that the V1 had crisper image than O3. But after pausing the video, you can see that the V1 is over sharpened (digitally). The O3 does give more detail. But it's not by much. I don't think you'd notice the difference during flight. HDZero is quite a bit fuzzy in comparison. I feel like you would see that difference in flight. But it definitely has better shadow detail which may be important for close proximity flight.
