      Flew far away, lost radio signal, had almost no idea where it was, wasn't familiar with the map app, got panicky. As a last resort, I turned the controller off, then back on. It worked! Got signal back, and she was automatically on the way home. Apparently, that's what you're supposed to do. I was guessing.

      I bought a mini2 used for $150, biggest mistake I have made. It flys fine WHEN IT LETS ME TAKEOFF, but it's always complaining about geo fence bs. And it's camera is not very good. Overall I now hate DJI.

    I would like to add another drone mistake. Not watching where you're walking while flying the drone. I was walking down a slight hill. I slipped and fell on my back. I'm 68 years old. I shouldn't be doing that. I dropped my glasses, my hat, and the drone controller in the mud. The drone landed right beside me and shut off. Nothing was broken and I am O.K. except for a lot of mud.

    I am 80 years young and have recently been presented with a drone. Your video is the best I've come across. Most "drone pilots" seem to be spade shaped bearded, tartan shirt types who know everything!!

  • @gisstudents1098
    @gisstudents1098 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Hi Carson! Great tips there! A few more I might suggest for beginning drone pilots is to always calibrate the compass before flying at a new location (standing away from metal objects). Also, to calibrate the "IMU" or "Inertial Measurement Unit" about once a month (compass tells the drone what direction it's flying--IMU relates to acceleration and tilt angle for stable flight with 6-axis gyro). The IMU "green=good" indicator in the app is like a "check engine light"--it won't turn "red" until state of emergency! By then, a person might crash their drone. For drones that rely on WIFI frequency more than radio, you can buy a special high-speed cable (if using an Ipad Mini or Iphone--you can just use the Apple highspeed charging cable). This improves transmission of the video feed for lower latency and reduces risk of disconnecting mid-flight from the app (always turn smart phones on "Airplane Mode" before flying so incoming calls don't cause drone to disconnect from flight app! Since your smart device is plugged in to RC--leaving it on cellular or Wifi is unnecessary and causes frequency interference). Yes, you don't need cellular data to use the DJI Fly App--but you have to have internet connection to initially log into the DJI Go App before leaving the house. Position the controller antennas flat side towards the drone at 45 degree up angle for best broadcast (many "newbies" point antenna tips straight at drone, down at ground, or criss-crossed . . . all of which are incorrect!). Yes, the drone will execute a "lost link procedure" if it loses connection with the remote controller (it still has connection with satellites though to fly in auto-pilot). I leave it on "Return to Home" for normal use. However, if a person flies under structures or takes off from a boat--set the "lost link" procedure to "hover" in place--so the drone can re-connect with RC and land safely (Otherwise, your drone will try to ascend up to RTH altitude and fly straight up into tree branches, bridge, or overhead obstructions! And, if the boat has moved--it will land in water because that's the "home point" it last remembers. If your flying altitude is higher than RTH altitude--the drone will not descend until landing (So, if you are flying above a skyscraper and the drone loses connection--it won't fly down to RTH height and hit any objects below it). Remember that RTH is still blind to obstacles! Ken Heron was orbiting around a skyscraper and the concrete building blocked his signal--the drone "came home" in straight line and smashed right into the building (altitude was not set high enough to clear it). Also, many people do not realize drones will execute an emergency "auto-landing" at 10% battery. So, make sure to land with 20-30% battery left just to be safe. Hope this helps--you covered a lot of excellent points as well. Use a micro SD card with a U3 rating for sure. I turn my drone on first so it has a minute to connect to satellites in GPS mode before I take off. Otherwise, you will be flying in full manual or "Attitude Mode" with no GPS to help you. Please feel free to use some of these suggestions if you make a "Part 2" video sequel

      A LOT of good tips! 👍

    • @gisstudents1098
      @gisstudents1098 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@SagefulSolutions Also, I always turn the drone "off" before I turn the remote controller off! If you turn the RC off while the drone's rotors are "armed" or "idling"--the drone might think it has lost connection and take off by itself to "return to home!" It should simply fly up to RTH altitude and then land again at home point. But, it sure is scary when your drone takes off like that.

      Good adds to a great video, thank you. A lot of old school RC pilots were trained opposite in the 72mhz days... turned the plane on first to confirm clear frequency. But with today's systems...Always control first on and last off. (You wouldn't slap a horse on the A__ before setting the bit and reins, would you??)

    If you reset the RTH home point, won't that set it to where the drone is currently at instead of where you are?

    I just got a DJI mini pro 3 on September 16 off of Amazon. My last software update I thought mention something about 0king them activating a remote ID on it. How can we tell if ours has the remote ID activated? By the way, I just got my part 107 certificate/license.

    I want to get started but now I know the 13 things not to do. I figure that saves me the cost of a replacement drone.

    I just got my DJI air 2s 3 days ago first time flyer but I've been flying drones on Xbox and the controls are very similar anyway one thing you forgot to mention which I've done twice which is stupid is don't power up the drone without first removing the gimbal protector.... but your videos very informative thank you.. I did subscribe.

    My 2 cents on the gimble wheel: you can set up the app so that Fn button + gimble wheel acts as a zoom in & out 😊

    Great tips! What prop blades are you using? They look like 1 piece and the Air 2S I just purchased has the collapsible 2 piece.

    Do all or most drones save the videos on an SD card?
    I look at many drone adverts typically on AliExpress but most do not mention where the videos are saved and do not mention SD cards.

    Good video. I be been flying a Mavic clone for a while now. I have probably 10 or 12 FPV quads now, and never paid more than $100 for any of these. I've only broken two props, ever. One of mine got snagged in the carpet when picking it up. Yeah, it was a micro, stunt guad. Another, a wall. LOL
    I've had one fly away. It was one of those El cheapo $20 Dollar Store quads. A camera, but no FPV.
    This was an informative video. Good job.
