Due to the thousands of years of fighting for and disputing over territory, many Europeans think along the lines of “just because the borders got redrawn again doesn’t mean our ancestors suddenly became a different nationality” - when an European person says that you aren’t Americans, they are simply applying their own thought process to your situation. Only difference with your situation is that there wasn’t a map to redraw the borders on yet, when we say you aren’t Americans we draw the distinction between your culture and the USA’s who forcefully assimilated your people. What people don't understand is that it is the same inside of European countries. Take France for instance. Go to Brittany and you'll find people talking celtic, go to the Nord and you'll find people talking chti, go to Corsica and you'll find people talking corsican... Even for the people who do not talk a distinct dialect, there are a lot of words and expression that people would use in certain areas and not others (Biloute in the Nord, Cagniard in the South, Chocolatine in the most barbarian parts of France, etc.). People will have different accents, regions have different stereotype associated to them (people in the Nord are incestuous, people in the West always get wasted, people in Corsica are always terrorist, etc...), sometimes even words/insult linked to a particular region of France ("plouc", for instance), eat different foods and drink different things (people typically drink cider in Normandy, pastis near Marseille, wine in Burgundy, bear in the Nord, and everything they'll find in Britanny - they don't care as long as they're getting wasted). The culture are different ; people in Paris are always in a hurry, in the South they're always smiling, etc... And people don't do the same amount of bises in different regions. Another significant difference. And that's the same thing inside of Spain, Italy, Great Britain or Germany. Not even talking about the tensions between French-speaking belgians, and Dutch-speaking belgians, too. The actual difference between european countries is usually much, much bigger than these regional differences that you find both inside European countries and inside the USA.

Then with ww2 and all the refuges you have Germans coming to USA.
Also you have pockets that claim heritage from Spain, Italy, Nederlands and France.
Thus why Americans are interested in certain countries. It has to do with their genealogy.

The difference in "America" from Texas to Mississippi to Massachusetts to California is crazy.
@Swords Chant Wel, yes. But the point Im trying to make is in a singular country you have 'yall' country in the south, posh-leafy liberal New England, Bustlin NY, Cuban culture in Miami, etc. A lot of differences between regions.
Massachoicetts well we do, since the U.S. is about the same size as Europe, and there is definitely a difference in culture between New York, and East Coast Northern Area, and Hawaii, a few Islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean
John Saunders different types of ethnic groups, different legal systems from state to state, and different economic systems varying between states. The U.S. is very much like different nations, but is united as the biggest global super power.
That's exactly how Europeans feel when Americans talk about what "European behavior". There's a big difference from Portugal to The Netherlands and from Greece to Finland.
I think they might have been being extra nice because the interviewer was American 😂 reading all of these other comments I'm pretty sure that we're hated in a lot of other countries.

People appreciate it if you at least attempt to communicate a little in their native tongue.
earlybird015 it's very true, arrogance, ignorance and self rightousness is something strongly associated with Americans. And it isn't easy to get any input from americans that changes that.

The popular vote is used for all other governmental positions, it's just the president that is elected based on the electoral college system.
People are free to vote for whomever they want at any point in their life.
