I have been playing majoras mask on my n64. It has been a sublime experience. It is pretty nice playing the original experience while most people are just getting hyped for whatever is coming out next. I still like playing new games but sometimes it is exhausting trying to keep up and there’s always this sense of urgency. Whereas with older games it almost feels like time slows down and the rush is gone.
@@dylangirard4670I do recommend looking up a video, at least. I consider it to be, probably the best texture pack ever made because of how much effort went into making it match the concept art and original aesthetic of the game, but without the hardware limitations. And the PC recomp makes the game run at high fps with interpolated animations that look SO good.
@@Patrick-bn5rp ya I will definitely check it out at least then. I haven’t tried any of the pc reconcompilation games that hve come out in the last few years but I’ve been meaning to get around to it just to see what an improvement it would be.
I'd say I'm in between an enthusiast and a niche gamer. I spend a good portion of my time gaming but lately I find myself playing more retro or retro-aesthetic games than I do anything new. My personal reasons for that is that hyper realistic graphics do absolutely nothing for me and they actually hinder my experience. I play games to escape from reality for a few hours at a time so when games are hyper realistic they just don't allow me to have the experience I'm trying to achieve.
I’m trying to learn to live with the fact that I will not beat every game I touch and that’s ok. Currently silent hill 2 remake, xenoblade and call of duty black ops 6. Im taking my sweet time with fighting games sprinkled in and it’s fun ! Happy gaming
I just found this channel and i have to say, i love the vibes of the channel, also the editing is top tier high quality vids, keep up the good work dude. 👍
Dude, you are my type of gamer. I loved playing Final Fantasy games at my best friend's house, but when i got Golden Sun as my first GBA game, it changed everything for me. I'm still a diehard JRPG fan. I'm currently playing Metaphor: Refantazio on my ROG Ally X. Playing it on an 8-hour flight made me feel like a kid again.
I'm really not sure I'd add "Niche" as a category; instead, everything you've mentioned applies to Enthusiast. To elaborate: A Casual gamer to me is someone I met over the summer this year: They have a PS5, they're excited about the latest AAA game and the graphics it provides; they might enjoy the story and the gameplay, but they don't really think about games on any deeper level and they don't obsess about games as an Enthusiast might. They're eager for the latest releases and think of gaming as a forward progressing medium that is always improving and getting better in every way, they're Jim Ryan saying, "The PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?" Then you have Enthusiasts, those of us who consume gaming TH-cam, listen to gaming podcasts, talk about games and the industry itself in a more in depth manner, whether that's online or if we can find someone in life to chat with. Those of us where maybe we don't always have time to game, but we're always thinking about games in whatever context. I get where you're going with Niche, but I think what you call a "Niche" gamer is actually an Enthusiast who has seen through the hype machine and can realize that there are so many games from the past that they haven't yet experienced. Stuff maybe they were excited about when they saw it in a magazine as a kid, but never got to experience it for various reasons. I might be considered "Niche" under your definition: I have every variant of Gameboy (sans Micro) that I have modded myself with IPS screens, power inverters, etc, etc. I have PSP's, Vita, DS's, 3DS, a SNES and Sega Genesis both hooked up to a CRT; I have a cocktail arcade cabinet that I've built with a custom Raspberry Pi setup for classic arcade games and NES. But I also play heaps of new releases, by which I mostly mean indies. Caves of Qud has been a favorite of mine lately, Call to Arms: Gates of Hell - Ostfront (mouthful, yeesh) is another, but I also like Cyberpunk and ended-up getting Starfield with a new video card last year. All that said, I have "casual time" as you mentioned. I have two children, a wife and responsibilities; I play maybe an hour a day if I'm lucky. But what differentiates me is that I'm always thinking about games and thinking about the industry. I spend time on dedicated PC gaming forums and talk to others about them, as well as industry happenings, the philosophy of games and gaming, etc, etc. I have other hobbies, but I am obsessed with games and have been since I was but a wee-babe. I'm just generally excited about games, so I play new ones, I play old ones (this year alone I've made good progress through not only Cyberpunk, but Shining Force, Dragon Quest 3, KOTOR 2, Tomb Raider (PSX, of course) and for the first time have been playing Mario Golf on GBC) and that to me defines an Enthusiast. I feel as though you're an Enthusiast and you've just discovered you don't need to keep-up with the hype machine, the scales falling from your eyes and realizing that old games are just as valid as new. I had this same realization about a year after my first kid was born and I was spending less time gaming, but more time reflecting back on when I was a kid and the games I had and played. It was shortly thereafter that I started getting into retro games and later realized they're not just "retro games", they're Games, one and the same and it's all one contiguous medium. Anyway, sorry for the long-winded, rambling comment, it is my nature.
Nothing beats playing my original copy of Pokemon Silver on the FPGBC these days. It's as close to the original experience as I can get with the convenience of a modern screen and rechargeable battery.
I do feel like Sony consoles have stopped being as "niche" friendly, starting with the ps4 generation. For one reason. Lack of backwards compatibility. Back in the ps3 days, you could buy tons of old ps1 games and even some ps2 games off the store and it was great. You could even play ps1 discs just fine. If you had a launch model, you could play ps2 discs. Ps4 did away with pretty much all of that. They made a ps2 emulator for that system, barely released any games for it even though the ps3 store offered more games, and then released like no ps1 games. They had the opportunity to merge the two store libraries and they didn't take it for some reason. And then they could have taken advantage of the power of the ps5 to make a ps3 emulator and they didn't do that, either. :/ Xbox is a little different. Dev mode lets you install emulators, which makes it unironically the better back compat system since it plays more sony games than the current sony system. But it's kinda finnicky to get working and requires you to have a pc to get it all running. I blame Jim Ryan for my current issues with Sony. He's infamous for his "why would you want to play old games" spiel. 😒 Uncultured swine, he is.
@jdxcoffee Nashville has a great coffee scene for sure. Also, to add to the game discussion - I would encourage you to really lean into what you enjoy playing and stick with that. As I've gotten older (I'm 35), I've really given up on chasing the "next best game" and just enjoy what I enjoy. If you'd rather play old Nintendo consoles, then do that. Get the consoles, get a retrotink, get the everdrives and have a great time. You don't have to force yourself to buy original cartridges. I have a PS1, PS2, and Wii connected to my 4k TV via Retrotink and I do a combination of physical and roms/iso's on OG hardware.
I think that for the price of the Chromatic you could have an original GBC with a with a shell look of your choice an Oled screen that will make the games look anyway you want, old school, clean, etc... ultimate nostalgia renewed. Nothing against the chromatic. I hope some GameStop's will have it on display to test.
I'm not sure what kind of gamer I am... I love playing modded OG hardware with ROM Hacks, I like playing all consoles both handheld and home, I play few PC games but a couple. I like JRPGs mostly both old and modern but also play puzzle and action games. My 'gateway' into gaming was being a tech junkie - love building and modding starting back in the 286 days with my first PC. I started messing around with programming when it was still on punch cards ( yeah, I'm old!). My first console was an original Pong console but I didn't become a 'gamer' til later.
I probably count as a Nuche gamer, as my main genre is JRPG but I also play other genres in-between... I'm also a patient gamer who doesn't buy any game full price. Though lately, I barely buy anything at all as I focus on beating my backlog!

Why else do you think mobile games are so heavily anime waifuized for example, Because men want to look at nice things and giggle, and Women want to aggressively dress them up, if none of them have value to people (and beauty can be seen in practically anything) then they dont sell, they dont become popular. Just like with art, we are in an era of "safe bets" in a dull world.
There are 1.86 billion gamers on PC. Niche games always have consumers there. Hell, there are people playing games one thinks are dead, like S4 League or Metal Gear Online. The vast majority of PC gamers are not active on Steam, and that comes as a shocker to some people. It's not because they are playing games that are not on Steam like World Of Warcraft, League Of Legends, Valorant, Fortnite or Escape From Tarkov. It's becuse they are playing MANY other games that aren't there. Also, small indies that are great, arguably as good as titles like Hades or Hollow Knight, but never popular, usually have a couple people playing them at all times. If you follow Best Indie Games you'll see how often games like this come out, and when you check how they are doing on the charts after a while, yes, you see AMAZING games with just a few people playing it, and that does translate to games that are not on Steam.
