I played in that Splatoon 2 tournament way back when, I don't exactly have a way to fact check this so I could very well just be wrong, however my understanding of why the stream was canceled was that Nintendo wanted their team names changed or they wouldn't stream it, leading to all 4 teams that qualified for day 2 to voluntarily drop out of the tournament. Nintendo then went to the 5th-8th place teams to try to get them to play in day 2 instead, to which they all refused, leading to day 2 not happening at all. The original top 4 teams then played out the finals under a new tournament called The Squid House which had like a $25k pot. Once again, can't 100% confirm everything I said is true, not with my team from back then anymore nor does the official Discord for the initial tournament even exist nowadays (they had to set chats to read only because people were spamming #FreeMelee, it was funny as heck), but this is hopefully at least mostly accurate.
yeah this is exactly what happened!! not to mention one of the biggest upsets happened during that top 4 which then lead to a pretty quick 3-0 for the projected winner. $25k is still insane for this scene and I whole heartedly wished we couldve continued to crowdfund like that. Sadly not possible in the state the game is in right now
For Animal Crossing, a really interesting one would be the scandal involving test copies for Animal Crossing Wild World. In it, the villager Baabara was programmed to call the player the n-word, seemingly from a disgruntled dev. Nothing much came from it apart from the dev team apologizing, just something weird
12:12 “Skullgirls ohno” This rant is completely unrelated to the topic of the main video but I saw that comment or and just wanna add my two cents. As a black person myself I REALLY don’t like when my people are treated as a collective that needs constant pandering to please. Lots of companies recently (ahem Concord) have been prioritizing inclusivity over well-written characters. The removal of Filia’s comb in her hair and Band’s backstory is really just pure virtue signaling. The devs tried to “not offend us” but in my opinion only offended me more by basically implying we’re too narrow-minded to understand why Band was being beat, and too sensitive to see a white girl use a comb. I love Skullgirls to death but I CANNOT find any way to be excited about these parts of the update. The devs literally said “Hey guys we removed the comb from the white girl because ONLY BLACK PEOPLE use combs am I right?😆😆😆” I already didn’t like censorship before because it can alter the main content (cough cough Dragon Maid dub), but after the Skullgirls one I’m actively against it now. I don’t want to be treated as a collective to be pleased, I just want to be treated as a person
The only Smash bros “controversies” smash fans worry about are Nintendo characters getting into a game primarily about Nintendo characters (they didn’t add a guest character they pretend to know everything about)
Dude the insane thing about advance wars is that IT HAPPENED TWICE! it happened with the original game because of 911 and now it happened because of Ukraine war which is a remake of the first one and 2nd one. Like why is advance wars just cursed to be released during tragic events
The whole bayonetta controversy was so funny, because it really showed just how small of a franchise bayonetta is and noone knows anything about it. She really started her video with "the bayonetta franchise made approximitly 450 million dollars" and we are talking about a whole franchise that together sold less units than ARMS. And people believed her.
Yeah Coney's like "that seems a little small for being the main character of a game like _Bayonetta,"* as if Bayonetta means anything. That series has three games, kind of four, and you could argue over half of them are just bad.
13:59 it's super weird It's a byproduct of having most characters that aren't in the main cast designed by outside artists But they could've just...done more of the designs in-house
I normally find people complaining about localization cringe but yeah people complaining about fates localization have a point A real full support conversation got translated into "..." "..." "..." "..."
Yeah, the localization team handled Fates _terribly_ ; I mean, we got shafted a lot of dialogue in order to fit in more bad jokes and dated references than you can shake a stick at (or, in your example, literally nothing at all).
@@Sharkofspacei havent played the game in a while so i might be misremembering but its the whole support having ... as dialogue as a joke when afaik the japanese version had a completely different text
The support conversation is between two characters who are the “stoic, quiet” type of character. The original dialogue is a full complete conversation between the two. The localizers thought it would be funny to take that conversation out and just have them say “…” back and forth to be funny
funny thing lots of people thought a horny male designed that xenoblade 2 blade when it was actually just a woman. but yeah the reason why xenoblade 2 designs are like that is because they needed tons of artists to design blades.
Xenoblade wasn't about titties until 2, and it was never about titties ever again. It always had attractive characters, and some had spicy outfits, but it was never as shameless as it was in 2. And now every time I tell someone I'm a Xenoblade fan, they all think I'm a gooner. Because people have only heard of 2, and Shulk. Xenoblade is about exploration, deep lore, religious and philosophical references, intricate characters... All down the drain because the public zeitgeist only cares about Dhalia. Man.
From my experience, it seems like people (including Coney) overemphasize the ""anime"" aspects and tropes of Xenoblade and FE and ignore or straight up don't know about the deeper themes, philosophy and characters. I'm not sure why, I think it might be because of the puritanical association with Nintendo, people are more likely to scrutinize for things like that. They might also see more lines in the sand for content or characterization than they would for something like Persona or SMT or FF or anything else anime-styled with great substance. It's not like people don't or can't revere some of Nintendo's games for their themes and characters and ideas (Majora's Mask, Mother 3, TTYD, Galaxy, etc.), but there's just something about the greater substance of these two series that doesn't break into the consciousness like any of those other anime franchises do. I guess you're even doing some of it yourself, as there's plenty to enjoy of what you just mentioned also present in XC2, and that's coming from someone who's never even seen a lick of any XC/XS/XG gameplay; someone in another comment mentioned Pyra, Mythra and even Dahlia are all pretty well-written characters. Maybe that contrast between you and them might tell you something about the state of the franchise's perception, another piece of the puzzle.
@@vdpt9911 Xenoblade 2 definitely still has what I love, even if I dislike some of its gameplay decisions. It's just that what's actually in the game doesn't matter to how it affected the public perception of Xenoblade. That's because the real core of this issue is that people generally don't have the time or attention anymore to understand something they're only barely interested in. The short-hand cliffnotes, or whichever stands out most to them, is what ends up propagating. The ideas that make Xenoblade truly great are hard to communicate in a funny way. But since time immemorial... Titties have pretty much immediately caught the eye of an audience. Xenoblade 2 was definitely the most guilty of it by far. And so, because of its popularity, I still blame its odd artistic decisions for this public stigmata. It's not _only_ titties. I love the Xeno-games, from Gears to Blade 3, and that includes Xenoblade 2. But Lord knows, loving these masterworks makes people think I call NNN "Nonstop Nut November."
@@mythosinfinite6736 Yeah, that's awful. There's a lot of games that I've ended up enjoying that are similarly just brushed off by the public from the simplest, easiest, often most cynical or lazy analysis/interpretation (ex. M&L Dream Team, Paper Jam, AA4-6, hell, the entire concept of strictly handheld consoles, their games and unique ports). I suppose that's always been a thing but I definitely blame the rise of short-form content, correspondingly shorter attention spans, less willingness to engage in fear of ostracization, overall decrease in connection, and greater comfort in online anonymity on what I feel is an increase in this behavior over the last 8 years or so.
Its funny how 3D All Stars was brought up (justifiably so) and during the fire emblem bit he didnt mention the fact that the same goddamn thing happened. There was an official translation of the first fire emblem game released for the first time ever... only on the eshop... only for a few months. That shit was wild.
With localization, I'm glad that the recent remakes have been healing some of the sins of the past with things like Vivian. Another example of it that isn't talked about as often is an npc in Black and White 2 who is implied to be a trans woman! She has a high ranking martial arts rank, and says she used to be the male equivalent of the same rank but "Science is wonderful." That's an example I like a lot
not only did nintendo put first things first alway full screen no distraction "put those gotdamm straps on" but also how weak are peoples gripps that they can't hold a remote. as a stupid kid i never even drop the remote once and i was doing all the wild waving through the air everyone was doing
I used to be a stupid teenager who thought random racism was funny. My friends laughed at it so I thought it was okay, but, while I still enjoy dark humor, I have grown as a person and can tell the difference between a joke and just blatant racism. All this to say, punchout was still funny and if it can’t have funny stereotypes then damnit I don’t want it back!
As a Mexican I love Mario in a sombrero and poncho. People need to stop virtue signaling. It’s like being offended by a renaissance fair themed area/outfit
Damn I remember the whole Fire Emblem Fates thing. I would follow any news about it as a kid because I really liked Awakening, and I remember when I heard some parts got censored or cut entirely for the release outside of Japan. It wasn't just the petting minigame either, Soleil's entire Support had to be changed, and they cut a few of the swimsuit outfits for My Castle. Honestly the fact they cut out so much was kinda funny in some weird way. It didn't really matter much anyway, I remember playing it and not really liking the game much. But the memes about it were pretty funny. Edit: Plus funny enough it wasn't even the only censorship in FE at the time, I remember Tokyo Mirage Sessions was heavily censored also, there was a whole DLC that didn't even release outside of Japan and I remember there was some sort of controversy when everyone found out the censored version would be used as the basis for the remake on Switch
I’d say the Soleil thing was one of the few good calls made in the localization since it was based on a real-life Japanese mindset that is both non-present and heavily discouraged in the west so aside from it being one of those “it only works if you understand the culture” things, the entire meaning of it would just come across as bad in the west where it (sadly) wasn’t meant to in Japan.
Dude if Coney gave Xenoblade a chance, people are either gonna see the stream to criticize it and Coney will criticize it too, which in term will result on higher viewership or to see his reaction when he realizes that Xenoblade has a very good story outside of the horrible character design some of the characters have that Twitter can't get off of their minds
Coney would legit tap out after 1’s unproblematic tutorials dawg. The man is inconceivable To the genre outside of ff7 and that one doesn’t count too much imo
12:46 let me preface this with, it’s coming from a gay guy who has been following the series since it came out on the Wii 1- the xenoblade series is about so much more. There’s fanservice yeah (for both the men and women by the way, no one ever mentions) but the more important thing about xenoblade is that it’s about the struggle of war and pushing humanity past its limits to survive. It’s legitimately one of the best stories I’ve experienced, I’d recommend playing at least the first game, it has the last of all this and is focused most strongly on story 2- Fuck. Don’t even get me started on tit rabbit. Nobody likes Dhalia. I’ve never met anyone, not a single person that likes her. I fucking ABHOR her but the great thing is, once you see that cutscene you can just throw her in the bin and never use her again. She’s a fully optional character With no character, so she’s not worth using. The fact that so many characters in xenoblade 2 are designed by so many different artists leads to a lot of really neat designs and uhhhh… a Dhalia or 2 sadly
Plenty of people like Dahlia, there are just some reactionary people who are loud about disliking her. If you're actually willing to engage with her sidequest and heart-to-heart, the entire point of her is to look past flashy outer images to see inner beauty through virtues and hard work, so the fact that so many people write her off based on that flashy design seems like they ironically care more for image rather than virtue. I get disliking her based on aesthetic values (there are some parts of her design I would change myself), but to say she has no character or worth is blatantly false, with her design, mannerisms, and powers feeding into that character.
@ that’s very fair about her story, I’m willing to admit to that. They still just could’ve made her tits a bit smaller than everyone else’s heads, that’s wayyyyy out of place even in this anime ass world
I have the Nintendo music App, it's fine, I love some of the Songs on it, splatoon 3's soundtrack is fire, scarlet and violet has some bangers, there's good stuff on there, but man would I kill for some of the older pokemon games like gen 4 and 5 to be on here... as well as xenoblade, if they're not gonna put that Peak soundtrack anywhere else at least put it there!
Wait, the "biggest controversy" for Splatoon and Smash was a fan movement and a leak, and not a pro team being outed for racism and _a fuckload_ of Smash pros being outed as pedophiles? Oh, so it's just controversies where you think Nintendo was personally in the wrong, huh? Also Coney's like "what the hell controversy could there be about Animal Crossing" when I've seen a video where a guy tier listed every _Animal Crossing controversy exclusively._ Turns out Animal Crossing fans get dangerously close to advocating for eugenics and human trafficking when you turn the victims into cute little animal people!
I didn't know there was a 3rd fates game... maybe I should play that game... I gotta finish 3 houses first tho, I adore that game but I cannot get myself to finish it for no reason
I like how coney talks about franchises he’s not into like fire emblem and xenoblade but barely talks about Pokémon and is just like”yeah all the games except Gen 1 are objectively bad moving on”
The original video was made before this happened, but let's not forget when a Splatoon team won the world championship and got their characters placed on a banner in the game, only for us to find out later that some of them were straight up racist toward the quote "monkey people." Then Nintendo had to alter the in game banner to just have random characters that did not resemble the members of that team, but the cherry on top of it all is that the new banner characters represent a whole variety of skin tones.
I was playing MP1 last night and got tug o war 5 times in my 30 turns and got the canoe one 3 times. It hurt my wrist more than anything. I played it a lot as a kid and never tore my hand. But man i played that boo game one time awhile ago and i never want it to come up again, that one was EVIL to play and actually hurt. As a kid i used to be so good at it but fuck i cant anymore
13:30 I think the problem was that artists were given full creative freedom, leading to some … interesting designs. That being said, XC2 (and xenoblade in general!) is still really fricking good but I wont deny that the character designs are funky
somewhat related to the mario party mini game giving blisters but once when i was playing smash 4 i was playing with a gcc that didnt have the weird plastic protector thing and once tried to sdi bayo bullshit and slit my thumb open
If Nintendo All-Stars being limited-time only, how about we extend that to Metroid, and Splatoon, and Smash Bros? Time limits are always a tactic to get you to buy things because it scares you into making a rushed decision. Doesn't matter if it's a mainline title or a re-release
I'm not entirely familiar with XBC2 outside of it being more character driven with boobs as the selling point, but I don't know if Rex having kids with his blades in 3 helped with the allegations
Nintendo Music app is.... fine. I hate that they're doing the drip feed like everything else on NSO has got going on, but at the very least it's got SOME work put into it with the Extend feature and the Spoiler feature. They should 100% have released the music on other streaming platforms as well but I'm also a massive hater of music streaming in general. Only reason I even tried it is because it's a part of NSO. I do not see myself using it but that's because fuck music streaming. I like my music files.

Sadly not possible in the state the game is in right now
I knew some people involved in that! I saw screenshots of the #freemelee channel it was so funny.
The Mario Party segment missed the time there was an accidental slur in MP8 lmao

12:12 “Skullgirls ohno”
This rant is completely unrelated to the topic of the main video but I saw that comment or and just wanna add my two cents. The devs literally said “Hey guys we removed the comb from the white girl because ONLY BLACK PEOPLE use combs am I right?😆😆😆”
I already didn’t like censorship before because it can alter the main content (cough cough Dragon Maid dub), but after the Skullgirls one I’m actively against it now. I don’t want to be treated as a collective to be pleased, I just want to be treated as a person
The only Smash bros “controversies” smash fans worry about are Nintendo characters getting into a game primarily about Nintendo characters (they didn’t add a guest character they pretend to know everything about)

Lmao
Yeah Coney's like "that seems a little small for being the main character of a game like _Bayonetta,"* as if Bayonetta means anything. That series has three games, kind of four, and you could argue over half of them are just bad.
They whole "pay voice actors" movement blinded them to the facts.

It's a byproduct of having most characters that aren't in the main cast designed by outside artists

I normally find people complaining about localization cringe but yeah people complaining about fates localization have a point
A real full support conversation got translated into

"..."
Yeah, the localization team handled Fates _terribly_ ; I mean, we got shafted a lot of dialogue in order to fit in more bad jokes and dated references than you can shake a stick at (or, in your example, literally nothing at all).
Said support being a dlc exclusive one too, and the following supports continue normally leaving you lost because they skipped it
What does that even mean? Did they just cut all the dialogue out?

Also Xenoblade 2 is about the Bible and Luffy, not titties. I am not staring at her chest for titties but because of the Bible.
@@vdpt9911
Xenoblade 2 definitely still has what I love, even if I dislike some of its gameplay decisions.
The public is just dumb and it’s best to ignore what they say. Don’t cast pearls before swine and all that
Its funny how 3D All Stars was brought up (justifiably so) and during the fire emblem bit he didnt mention the fact that the same goddamn thing happened.

@emblemblade9245 Yeah that makes sense.
Wigger Wednesday is my favorite Nintendo media moment. Not really controversy, just funny!

“Let’s not get silly” had me rolling 😂
12:46 let me preface this with, it’s coming from a gay guy who has been following the series since it came out on the Wii
1- the xenoblade series is about so much more. There’s fanservice yeah (for both the men and women by the way, no one ever mentions) but the more important thing about xenoblade is that it’s about the struggle of war and pushing humanity past its limits to survive. It’s legitimately one of the best stories I’ve experienced, I’d recommend playing at least the first game, it has the last of all this and is focused most strongly on story
2- Fuck.
They still just could’ve made her tits a bit smaller than everyone else’s heads, that’s wayyyyy out of place even in this anime ass world
My favorite Nintendo controversy was when melee made it into Evo from a charity contest and Nintendo tried to prevent it
I have the Nintendo music App, it's fine, I love some of the Songs on it, splatoon 3's soundtrack is fire, scarlet and violet has some bangers, there's good stuff on there, but man would I kill for some of the older pokemon games like gen 4 and 5 to be on here... as well as xenoblade, if they're not gonna put that Peak soundtrack anywhere else at least put it there!
I saw a "Sealed Brand New" Copy of 3d-All stars at my gamestop as late as earlier this year in stock.

I mean i don't think pokemon matters to a lot of people past X Gen so I get it. His fave gen is clearly the first
2:13 as a Mexican, I don't find this offensive at all. I love it. it's funny
The original video was made before this happened, but let's not forget when a Splatoon team won the world championship and got their characters placed on a banner in the game, only for us to find out later that some of them were straight up racist toward the quote "monkey people." Then Nintendo had to alter the in game banner to just have random characters that did not resemble the members of that team, but the cherry on top of it all is that the new banner characters represent a whole variety of skin tones.
no word short of iconic can best describe coney's face when the splatoon controversy got brought up
I can't believe the Splatoon section didn't talk about the Jackpot incident
