- The weather has been ridiculous this last few weeks so that has given me a chance to put together a video I have wanted to do for a while now.
I have not made it a secret, and this week you will watch, as a Man with ZERO building experience builds an off grid cabin in Alaska starting with raw land to the move in!
Those of you that have been with me for a while will have seen all of this before, those of you who are new will get a chance to see from the start until the move in!
Anyone new to the channel can watch all of the videos that got to this point, should you want a little more detail on how I did anything so far....
I am a complete novice builder who grew up in sunny California and thought it would be an awesome idea to build my own off grid cabin on raw land in Alaska...what could go wrong?
I have never built a thing in my life so why not a house? OH! and I can live in a trailer while I do it....and work full time! Did I mention that I am out of shape, over weight and 60? What could go wrong?

Sean in Alaska
About 6 years ago I was inspired by Shawn James (My Self Reliance) and we bought our homestead property in Northern Pennsylvania. I had considered building myself from scratch but ended up doing a pre fab building that I put together myself. A ground up build would have taken months and with the pre fab I had it all together in less than 4 weeks. We have a windmill and solar for power and collect rain water with a filtrations system that provides us with all we need ( also have a diesel generator for backup). I'm 54 now and wish I had done all of this sooner. I was stuck in that "someday" mentality where someday is the same thing as never. You never know until you try. Keep grindin
Shawn James is incredible! When I think of all the time I wasted on "someday" lol....
I just started watching your channel, and my dog is captivated. She will sit and watch until the commercials come on, then she’ll lay down, and when your video comes back on, she sits up to watch again. 🤷♀️
Signed - a jealous Texan wishing she was in Alaska cause we’re frying down here.
That....is an AWESOME pup! I lived in Houston for 2 years, when I moved in I turned on my air conditioning....2 years later I turned it off hahahhaaa....
Yes it’s been fun watching you work this land, put in a driveway, outhouse, chicken coop, and the cabin! Keep the videos coming! Have a great weekend…
It sure has been an adventure!
Well done my friend!!! Thanks for taking us along!! 😊
Thanks for joining me Reniece!
You’ve been on a long journey most of the time alone but you learned on the way and your a much better man for it.....well done my friend. I’ve been with you on this journey and some time if we would have bin neighbours, I would have come over to help you but you built to fare from me but you had courage and you did well.....CHEERS
Thanks Gator! Yeah, the drive would have been a long one hahahhahaha....the learning has been the best part!
Nicely put together Sean! You and few few others (Kyle's Cabin, Bushradical, and Boss of The Swamp) inspired me also to just do it. Keep on truckin brother! You're making it happen!
Thanks Dave! You are rocking it yourself!!!!
The Outsider
LOVE the outsider! Great channel!!
@My Self Reliance
aka @Shawn James
Love his channels! That man is incredible.
Congratulations Sean to a job well done ! I just turned 60 in July of this year, and I've been thinking of doing the same thing as you, and I have zero woodworking skills. You have proven to me it can be done. What one Man can do, so can another !
Awesome Mark! Heck yeah...if I can you can!
He had to have more woodworking skills OR HELP to do this
@skins4lyfe I did have help, and everytime I had help those folks showed up in a video. As for skills? Well, if you watch me try and build that chicken coop you will shake your head at how ridiculous I look lol...when I built the first beam you will see I had no idea how to swing a hammer, but I am learning and getting better at every stage 😀 heck, I could not even cut a straight line with a skilsaw when I started hahahhaha....if I can do this, anyone can! Baring physical issues that would stop them....
Just what I need to wind down a busy Friday at work. tomorrow I have to pack an entire storage unit into my trailer which will be no fun in 100 degree temps.
Ugh! The heat hahhahHH
That was fun to see all those old clips again!! Thanks for sharing it with us!
I had fun putting this one together!!
I come from Vietnam, hello, I wish you a lot of health, peace and happiness ❤❤❤
❤️ thank you!
Bravo.. so inspired by you.. anyone who lives off grid has my admiration..never seen that early footage.. pretty cool Sean!.. have a great weekend ❤️☮️
Thanks Yvonne! And awesome that you got to see some of the early stuff!
...Sean, what an undertaking, and you did it!!! CongratuIations :)
I am not done yet.. but I have a chunk of it started now lol
@@SeanInAlaska ...no more winters in the traiIer, or cIimbing a ladder up to the deck...IoI ...now, it's a work in progress :)
Right?!
Great job sean, wish I could do the same but my health issues prevent me to do tasks like this and well my age too. It's okay I can live vicariously through your eyes. love the video, Sir
Thank you so much!
The last words you spoke on this video is some of the best advice I’ve ever heard, brother. Keep chasing, my friend…. Keep chasing. 👊
Thanks Patriot! 😊
Hey Seany- Sean! This was a great vid! I watched it with my 10 yr old granddaughter and she Loved it! You may have a convert here! lol! It was really good of you to show the start to finish. Kaitlynn actually understood the concepts because she helps her dad ( a woodworker) and has learned a few tricks herself in woodworking! Thank you, Liz from Kemptville, Ontario 😁🐓Have a fantastic week!
That is so cool Liz! Tell her I said thanks 😊 and thank YOU as well!!!
Hi, new to your channel. I have been binge watching your videos. Enjoying them all.
Thank you so much! And welcome 😀
Sean, you need some lettuce, tomato and onion for those burgers -- just sayin'! And, some of my potato salad and deviled eggs to go along with them! Just a virtual thought to let you know that we are all behind you -- 100% -- well, 99% in my case, since I can't deliver the goods! (I'm in Alabama, and mayo doesn't travel well in this heat!) Love all your videos so much. Thank you.
The problem with lettuce is I never go through it fast enough, and tomatoes are only for BLTs or eating by the slice. I am on board with the potato salad and eggs though hahhahahaaha!
@@SeanInAlaska Totally understand about the lettuce! Wish I were your neighbor, because I love to cook for people who are willing to eat!
And I would be willing too! Hahhahahha
Man after my own heart. Glad to see you living your dream
❤️
Hi there Sean!
We just got our sonotubes poured in Anchor Point today after battling a few setbacks with all the recent rain. Talk about a thrilling feeling to be underway with our build👍😀
So awesome! Keep pushing and you will be there in no time!!
Awesome job Sean. ☘🍀
Thank you Patrick!!!
❤❤❤😊😊😊Oh Sean, I've been waiting for this video for a long time! Finally, you began to use your truck for its intended purpose!))) Lol😊
Hahhahahahha! Yup, for hauling wayward trees 😉 lol
As always, another great video. Thanks Sean. And nice 1911/.45, very nice
I love that thing hahhahhaha!
13:20, best part of the vid :) good whisky, good glencairn glass. you, sir, are a legend!
Greatest glass ever invented!
So great to see all of these. Looking at the Ladies then it made me smile and say they sure come a long way. There isn't nothing about this video that I didn't like the memories are great. Thanks Mr. Sean 😊.
Why thank you Karen!
@@SeanInAlaska Your welcome Mr. Sean.

What a refreshing video. Love the kilt. I have been thinking about getting one.
Thank you so much! Warning on the kilt...you will never want to wear pants again lol
Amazing, my impossible dream, Alaska is another dream.
Where I live in the north-west of Italy on the border with Switzerland and France, you can only build on building land and it's rare and very expensive, and you can purchase houses for renovation. Thanks for sharing this beautiful story
Thank you so much for watching! You can build in most places up here in Alaska, and all of the state has beautiful things.
The algorithm brought you to me. As I’m primarily Scottish and love my kilts, of course I had to watch your vid! Then, you sold me as a lover of Irish whiskey, beer and chew, you sold me 😂🥃🍻 Great job! I have 20 acres in NW Montana and LOVE IT HERE or I’d pack up my furkids and head for Alaska!!
Sweet! A kindred spirit!!! Hahahaha
@@SeanInAlaska Absolutely brother, absolutely!! Peeps see all these young and skinny YT’ers doing vids on building cabins, but at our similar ages and weights, don’t realize how hard a lot of that work is!! Kudos to you! Badass!
P.S. If I ever tow my trailer up to AK, love to stop by with some fine Irish and beer!!
@markcole5550 right? Lol..we are old lol
Whatever your plans are get them accomplished before you turn seventy years old. Seventy is when your whole body health-wise will start changing. Good video, I enjoyed it.
I have 9 years then lol....although 61 hurts too hahahahahha
So awesome to see. I dream this could happen as I am so ready to go off grid and get away from society. Very inspiring. Great job!
Thank you so much!
Making the dream happen!

Great work my friend it's awesome keep on keeping on with your dream your a inspiration to many have a blessed day

Congrats Sean! You inspire me. I've had a similar dream since I was in H.S. I bought 23 acres in a free State a little over a year ago. Similar development is in process at my place too. I'm 68.
Awesome! I truly believe it is never too late to start!
Can't tell you what a boost that gave me. I'm 67 and I have been thinking about buying land and building a cabin with my son, but thinking I am too old. You're like the sunrise to my spirit.
@Boballoo do it! Oh man...if my kids were here to help me, what awesome memories we would have had!!!
awesome video been fun watching the progress
It has been fun learning!
Well done!!! I've been watching since day one I think! You are Amazing Sean!!!

What a brilliant series! I’m hooked …binge watching over the weekend!Dave🇬🇧🇬🇧
Awesome Dave!
@@SeanInAlaska I think there are some Amish folks from Wasilla that build log homes. Could've had a small cabin totally completed in less than 2 weeks.
@TicklerDude there are loads of folks that build with logs up here...itbis super cool! I will try logs myself at some point.
You can see the weight loss transformation too. Well done mate!
Thanks! The weight loss was a bonus hahahahha
Vary awesome indeed. Thank you for sharing this with me and others too.
Thank you for your support Kevin! Much appreciated!
Congrats on achieving your dreams especially starting at 57. Covid hit me hard l lost 75% of my business but took jobs paying 1/5th what l normally earned. I won't lie it took the wind out of my sails.
You pursued. You succeeded.
Yay for Sean In Alaska! An inspiration....esp now that you can swing a hammer lol.
Thank you.
Sort of swing a hammer...let's not get carried away hahhahhaha...yeah, 2020 was a crazy year, but it allowed me to get started and that is what I needed.

Thank you LaRue 😊
Hi Sean, it is incredible what we can do when and if we decide to do it!! You have done some fantastic stuff there up in Alaska!!!
So true....if only more people would chase the dreams 😀
Very good job on building the cabin.
Thanks Oliver!
Wow Sean, I just turned 60 and I am impressed ..

You are living my dream I'll be 54 this year and if I can figure out a way to have a sustainable income I will move to Alaska and start my journey.
Best of luck and I look forward to future videos
Hey, there plenty of jobs in Alaska! Come on up!!!
I just came across your videos on this, and LOVE to watch them! The only problem I am having is, I am not getting my own work done around here now. I watch one of your videos thinking I can watch the next one later. Ho Ho, I end up having to watch more and more! You are so professional in what you do and take pride in doing so. You seem to enjoy what you are doing and so pleasant and easy-going kind person. 👍👍 How far do you live from your Brother? Does that rooster of yours wake him up too? "LOL"
Always leave time to do other things...lol my brothers live very far from me, my neighbor Todd live down the road and he says he rarely hears the rooster lol. I am a novice at this but I am glad the joy shows through!
My first time watching you, great video, love the life style living my dream you are, enjoy from another Alaska dreamer
Welcome 😀 this is the best move I have ever made lol....
Swan the Chickens need you to instal winter heat with a heat Lamp plus they need a door on the front for night time protection.
I am not heating the coop. The cost in power is just not something I can pull off, and they are fine without it. I do have a sliding door in the front that I close at night for them.
I went to the biggest Library I could find on home building subjects and learned it there, then I went to home depot and got the proper directions on plumbing, electrical, heating, got all the Permits I needed and I did it this way.
I used TH-cam as my school and so far it has worked out.
l remember when our fist got the land and started working on it and you have done a great job so far
Thank you Cecilia 😊
Well done Sean. Its a pleasure to watch your channel and so happy that you achieved your dream. Thanks for telling me that even at my age its not too late for me to set my heart on my Alaskan dream .everyone says im too old for anything i beg to differ.....id like to see em do my job for just 1 day. 😋
I am doing more now than I was 20 years ago! I hurt a but more, but I love it hahhahha

I've worked in the construction trade all my life. I have seen how a lot of things are done. Watching what you have accomplished is awesome. A couple of thing's were head scratchers. But hey whatever works.
Hi Sean, happy Friday
A very long time ago, I built a house, all the necessary tools and experience. Then tragedy, met a girl got married… divorced, lost the house tools and my dog… there is a happy ending… a bigger meaner dog 😎👍
That I a country Joseph! Hahahahha..all good in the end....
Very inspirational to me @ age 62. I have always imagined that building one's own house to be very satisfying. I like your priorities, outhouse, chicken house, then your house!
Looking back I am not sure I would change the build order, the outhouse was a game changer hahahhahha
Wow!! You did a great job. However, I must ask. I always have to wear pants when I do outdoor jobs simply because it’s easier. How you’re wearing that Kilt has to be uncomfortable and with all the mosquitoes too. I’m absolutely impressed because you’re a hard worker.
Thank you! For the most part the mosquitoes leave me alone from the waist down and have not been a problem....they love my arms though hahhahhahha
You are a trail blazer. Thank you for sharing your incredible journey. Your journey is inspirational. May God almighty bless you with the fruits of the spirit. Psalms 91 is a powerful prayer for protection against evil. Joy and grace be with you.

Great Video very inspirational I have 2 years left and then going to farm and build a house.
Very cool!!!
My dream was to always live in the country. I bought my 5ac piece of property. Where I can't be told what to do or how many dogs I can have. I have always been a dog person and raised dogs. had my property 6 years I am now 68 years old I just bought a shed and made it a tiny house I live in its a 12×28 Tennessee I'm a woman I live by myself. Well, me and my 3 dogs that are 100 lb each dog. and I love it it's been a lot of hard work I knew how to build things but it was still a learning curve especially when you're old out-of-shape and that I know exactly what you mean there. But it's getting better, and I'm getting more and more stuff done. I just started putting up a fence. I enjoyed your video very much. Marie from Tennessee. 1:04:13
Thank you so much Marie! There is no end to what we can do if we really want to 😀
Sean, you have come a long way on your property. God bless you

Good times! I just saw something that I didnt notice before. It appeared that you and Todd were holding out on Ward and Ward lifted the walls by himself. Could be the turkey I guess lol. Good video Brother, tell the gang I say yo. See ye next week.
Shhh! Ward reads these! Hahhahahahaha...I will.see them all this weekend! See ya brother!
The grading looked like it was done by profession grading and excavating company. Very well done. I worked 20 years in residential construction. I was bored and unchallenged with stick framing construction. I moved on to Industrial and commercial construction for another 31 years. Our company had many jobs in U.S.A. Parkway and it is the biggest industrial park in the world at 160 square miles. One of my highlights for my career was working on a Galvanizing plant. The red iron columns that supported the main frame of the building were 92 foot long and each one weighed over 4 tons. My safety coordinator and I used 2 10054 Sky tracks telehandlers to unload the red iron columns in tandem and place them in the correct locations. The plant has a 12 inch gas line to the furnace and was computer temperature controlled 24 hours a day. The furnace run at 900 degrees fahrenheit. The galvanizing plant is directly located next door to Elon Musk Tesla Mega Giga Factory. I think it is impossible for any one person to know the parameters of all 3 phases of construction. Your brain will never be that big. You may not of had any experience. I think your co workers may have contributed to your success.
That had to be cool to build! The skid steer work was by far the most fun I have had doing this so far lol...I loke how it turned out too!
Of all my helpers, my buddy Ward, who helped raise the walls, is actually a builder. We made a deal when I started this, he said he would loan me whatever I needed and give me all the service he could but I had to do it myself. I am very happy we made that deal! Brian who helped while I was sheeting the roof has built a few things in his day, but he was just manual labor for my project and Todd, who gave me the greatest help..and was key to me completing the roof had never really built anything either.
I am very lucky to have the friends I have!
Really enjoyed. Proper honest build and just shows how anything is possible. Great Job Sean.
Thanks! I firmly believe that too...anything is possible!
Crazy to see how far you have come, great work!
It blows my mind!
