FYI: the base of these pillars are supposed to be set BELOW the frost line to prevent heaving. Spoiler Alert: they aren’t. Also, using a sixteen oz finish hammer to set firms is hilarious.

0:30 Shouldn't you dig a bit deeper that that? you'll get ground frost below the pilllars and the house will start shifting. If temperatures drop below 0c you should have atelast a meter deoths and then half a meter for every ten degrees below 0 you expect it to be subject too. In Canada it should probably be 2.5m.
I went off grid 8 years I'm still working on the cabin a little at a time as money allows me to but going to do a house tour hopefully soon :) It's nice wood hauling weather right now so one thing at a time:))
From where I grew up, ground clearing for any kind of cabin, especially considering it's a wooded area deck it's bear country, dig carefully and have your 12 gauge slung around your back, LOL
This will be a great and cozy house. The glass facade brings a lot of light inside. Will you be independent with the house? solar/water supply/sewage? And please a question: You know the custom of celebrating the topping-out ceremony after completion of the shell, like we do here in Germany? The builder has to drive the last long nail into the roof and the more hammer blows he needs, the more drinks it costs. Yes, it's a small celebration at the end of the 1st major construction phase. Thank you! Yes it will be independent with solar, a composting toilet and grey water system. The topping-out ceremony sounds like a fun tradition, we do not have anything like that here in Canada that I know of but it would be neat if we did!
At first I was concerned about strengh of roof under extreme prolonged iced snow load.Not uncommon to have several storms in a short period of time. But the structure is impressive.
Nice build, teamwork and good camera work. I like the design. Looking forward to see how you complete the interior, heating, kitchen, etc. Did you mill your wood? Also, how will you insulate the floor and the roof?
Thanks so much! We did not mill our own wood, however we bought it from my uncle's saw mill. We insulated the ceiling after the roof was on from the inside with batt insulation. We have not done the floor yet but will be putting batt insulation under the floor from the outside and foam insulation on top of the subfloor before laying the wood flooring.
i would have staggered the vertical boards so you wouldnt have the very distinct joint going horizontally all the way across the side of the cabin. 16:18
how do you anchor the home to the ground? All i noticed was that you drilled holes into tthe beams and just set them down on them? No strapping to hold the home to the pillars? I would have put in all thread or something else to anchor the home?
Great work, such a nice cabin, lots of light and fresh air can be let in. Do you plan to build a wrap around deck so you can sit outdoor to enjoy the relaxing environment.?

How did you go about levelling the piers to be at the same height? Did you just use one piece of rebar to reinforce each pier? Why not more?

We plan to build a front deck that hopefully will go around the right side of the cabin. I am looking forward to sitting out on in the future :)
