    Awesome! Congrats on the new addition to the garage. The needles come off. No damage will happen to the motors. I've had my M cluster apart more times than I care to mention lol

      Good to know. Mark was worried about the clock springs if the shafts moved. Or did you do something to support the shaft when you pull the needle?

    • @HassanEido1
      @HassanEido1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ZeroTo60Tube the shaft will move but it's fine. Might be counter intuitive but it's how it's done no problem 👍

      To be honest, would have much rather have done that than drill in to it. Just didnt want to risk damaging those bloody clock springs. Hopefully have the gearbox out of it in the next few days and get it on the road asap. Really looking forward to this one.

    looks like a delicate, lengthy operation that shouldn't be attempted unless you have good eyesight, a steady hand, the rights tools, experience, etc! I came to this video because I'm considering purchasing a 2004 or newer Rolls Royce Phantom, also made by BMW and I've heard that the missing dash pixels is also an issue with them. Not sure, based on the video if the copper strip that was cleaned, is the entire cause of the problem. It would have been interesting to see if after cleaning it, would the original display be restored. I wonder, knowing this issue, if manufacturer's have been improving these products so they don't fail, or is it inevitable in all of them. I get the feeling that many manufacturer's are not as concerned as to the length of time their parts will last indefinitely, but more to the length of their warranty. That's why these videos are terrific, the repairs require a lot of patience, expertise, but I'm sure there is a tremendous cost savings and satisfaction doing it yourself!

    I've been wanting to do the 6WB cluster upgrade on my F30. It looks simple enough. A bit pricey though, but it really does look so good.

    I have probably repaired several hundred of these clusters. the needles do come off. I used to use a bad set of small side cutters to hold onto the shaft to stop them pulling out. you can use a needle puller on the oil temp needle. it had a little cover that pops off

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to know, the oil temp did have a different motor to the rest, i guess thats why. Did you have any issues lining the needles up again?

    • @AlexNZL
      @AlexNZL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZeroTo60Tube I was able to power them up on the bench and do the self test. but I also just got to know where they were meant to go. on clusters I was not familiar with I would use a postit note to mark the resting needle position. that sometimes worked depending on the motor.
      There are aftermarket screens available that are not shiny like that one. But they were getting harder to get hold of.
      The screens that I used to use had a heat activated glue on the end of the ribbon that I used a special iron tip with a rubber foot to activate the glue.

    • @AlexNZL
      @AlexNZL 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also dont throw away the old screen it is possible to replace the ribbon on it. That is what I started doing when I could only find the shiny screens. I left that job almost 2 years ago so not sure what the current availability is.

    Your friend was very wise his assessment. Pulling the needle out most certainly would have taken the shaft and spring with it. Below is a needle removal set specifically for BMWs. It comes with a tool that holds the shaft to prevent the entire shaft from coming out during removal. It's pretty cheap at 7£, but you also need to buy a screen from to get it.

      Yeah, have a foxwell nt610 (i think). It works. Its pretty slow on BMWs and rubbish compared to ista. But its handy being able to scan so many cars. Used it to diagnose the fault on the transit. I have used it on Renaults. etc. Definitely happy with it for the money it cost.

    That display looks real crisp and clean! Is it just the camera or does it look crisper than the original (you know, when new, before the pixelation, haha)?

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No it looks much sharper than a genuine one. Or maybe the genuine ones looked like that when they were new. Someone did say this gloss finish isnt correct, it should be more matte. However i think it looks better, even if its not orig.
