    A lot of people keep asking about 6m cable. This is a link here - ebay.us/TT22Bo
    About 12 months ago we did an Android install on a E39 540i that still gets a lot questions about how to install or upgrade different versions of the OEM audio system. Hopefully this video will help everyone understand what's going on with the factory setup and how to tackle upgrading both the head unit and the amps.
    Below are some links to the xtrons versions to suit the E38, E39 and E53 models. Just keep in mind with the ultra wide 10" screens some android apps don't display that nicely. Its just not made for such a wide screen, its made for narrow tall phone screens.

    I've watched this video so many times, and each time I appreciate more and more how informative it is. Upgrading an X5's infotainment system literally feels like dealing with the akashic records or some other esoteric dark art. Thank you so much for this.

      It really does take a while to get your head around how the system works. Im sure people watching it for the first time will miss certain points, that they pick up later on. Thanks for the kind words.

    My e39 had the most basic "business cd" version and luckily for me there was no DSP. I grabbed an Xtrons unit a few months ago after watching Dave install his Android unit (Erisin from memory). Mine is Android10 with PX6 processor, 4gb ram and 64gb rom. It's really been a pleasure, I read reviews of people complaining about Android units being glitchy or slow but mine is awesome, I guess that's what you get if you buy a cheap lower spec unit, I replaced all my speakers with Focal gear and it sounds amazing. Apple Carplay in my 20 year old BMW is a godsend.

    Great video. An easy way to explain all of this is if your car has factory navigation, you will need that 5m extension harness. If you have DSP, you will need to bypass the factory amp with an aftermarket amp. If you have the simple head unit with no screen, you're good to plug and play the aftermarket head unit without needing the 5m extension harness :)

    • @ethanfield5459
      @ethanfield5459 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To bypass the amp would you still
      Need a 5m extension for the head unit or wouldn’t matter any more with the 5m extension ?

      Michael, makes sense. i have an android system, plugged it in and turned on but no sound at all. Not sure what i am doing wrong? I have the amp that is on the left of the screen the standard hifi unit not the one on the right of screen. I also have the navigation unit from factory with the same head unit that is in the car on this video. I have no idea what DSP is? any reason why no sound is coming from my unit? i connected bluetooth audio and even with my phone no sound was coming out. its doing my head in now. I think it has to do with the amp? grrr.

    I think you nailed the explanation Andrew. I am surprised they didn't run a digital connection down from the front to the rear. I believe they started that in the later e series.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interestingly some of this generation did use a coax digital signal for the DSP, however, i have never seen one in the flesh so they must be very rare. But yeah the DSP in this car has the coax digital input. But you are right the fibre optic most bus on the e series is on pretty much all hifi models.

    Personally the bass you get from a sub isn't actually that useable in a car, crank the volume up and it tends to just vibrate everything lol. If there's any doubts in the doors speakers etc I'd upgrade them to really good quality component speakers and keep it simple. You'll get all your audio quality setup that way and have plenty bass available too

    • @ZeroTo60Tube

    I watched hours of videos and I read tons of different posts from various forum pages...
    Your video is the most explanatory resource. Thanks for the information.
    I need help with my e38 with factory DSP amplifier.
    1998 e38 with DSP (without nav - no need for 6m cable) and stock speakers I was not able to change the direction of the sound. Even if I change the balance cursor sound was still coming from all speakers.
    I decided to buy and install Avin Avant 4 with DSP option and focal 2-way speakers with crossovers to replace 4-door speakers (rear deck 4 speakers are factory original). Now I have very low and distorted sound from all speakers and I cannot direct sound to any speaker same as the old setup. I bought a used DSP factory amplifier to try but no luck, the result is the same.
    I am thinking about buying an aftermarket amplifier but not sure about what to do for a good sound quality
    I need your advice.

      I think ditching the DSP is the way to go. The fact the factory DSP is canbus bus controlled is just a nightmare. The DSP is also a very old piece of electronics that wont last much longer. I'd go new amp and crossover setup and simplify the system.

      I have I-bus license and USB on the head unit. Am I going to loose any feature by ditching DSP amp?

      Original components are all top quality and working well so chose to stick with them rather than replacing. I personally think a lot of cheap "upgrades" are actually a downgrade in sound quality. Of course my opinion only and others will differ.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rotorshed4115 I dont blame you, i have heard some horrific aftermarket setups (some being ones i have installed). I think a lot of people miss the tuning stage of a stereo i did in my early days. Component for component, the stock stereos are lesser quality than a current average aftermarket options and that plays on what people think of the stock stuff. However when they designed the stock system, the components, the amps, the equalisers are all tuned for the cars cabin. So they get so much more of the components than if you were to put them in a different car. This is why i wanted to initially listen to the DSP setup how it was intended. I was a bit bummed when i found out the DSP amp was no good. You can add a load of power to a system, change to the speakers in the doors and it will sound worse as the upgraded speaker is over powering the door enclosure. It ends up being a slipperly slope to set them up properly. I ended up doing about 4 different iterations of the stereo in my old e53 to get it right.

    Hi,
    I have installed the Eonon one on my 2003 e39 m5. I am confused about the Can Bus installation. Do I have to plug it to get the steering controls working and where should I plug it? And the buttons illumination, I had to jump the power wire from the factory harnesd to the extension cable to get them illuminated when switching the hradlights on. Also, can I add a region in the unit to make radio channels compatible with the regional bands here in Saudi Arabia?

    Hey, great video. I watched the whole video, maybe I didnt get it but is there an option in which I use the existing DSP (original, it still works)? My question really is this: what is the simplest way to install android in a E53 with DSP and the head unit like you have? No need for fancy sound, just need it to work.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can use the stock DSP, however you will need a device on the ibus to send the required data to the DSP to turn it on. Some of the latest androids have this built in, otherwise the Ibus dongle will do it for you.

    i think it's the 3rd or 4th time watching this video and still finds it frustrating. So, i guess that if you have a working factory amplifier, then you need just the 6m harness in order for everything to work. Same thing if you have a working dsp. All problems begin when you have to bypass either of those, or if you want to add an aftermarket ampifier on top of the factory one. So, if you have to just replace the factory ampifier, you should just run rca from the front to the back, to the aftermarket ampifier as an input and wire the output channels to the speakers directly or via crossovers?

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try and think of it as the original BM53 in the boot is the audio source, the OEM screen in the front is a controller for the BM53 and the DSP. If you have a non DSP amp, it just feeds from the BM53. WHen you fit an aftermarket unit, you are normally replacing the OEM screen and BM53. However if you have DSP, you need someway of controlling the DSP with out the OEM screen. If you are going aftermarket, just wire straight from the new head unit to the new amp. Ignore all the OEM stuff on the source side. Keep in mind none of the speakers have crossovers. So if you replace the amp or the DSP, you need to fit crossovers between the aftermarket amp and the speaker.

    Hello everybody. Recently I got a 2002 X5 with al the original sound system. It has the original cd changer, 4 speaker, 4 tweeter, and two sub-woofer. It does not have a navigation system.
    Now I got from ebay a Android unit with all the accesories to just plug and play. After I removed the radio and cd unit in the panel and then installed the new android unit. Not sound comes out. If you mess with it for long enough turning the car on and off it will sometimes start to work until I shut the car off again then same problem. Doesn’t seem like the amp is being triggered to turn on is my guess. I’m not sure what to do either. A lot of audiophiles on reddit swear off from using Chinese android units. They keep telling me I will be very disappointed with the audio quality. The problem is the brand name head units simply dont fit nice in the E53. There is gonna be so much dead space. Whats your opinion on the sound quality of these Chinese units?

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are using audio streaming services like spotify or youtube music that is your limitation on sound quality currently. The only way you may possibly notice a difference would be using FLAC (full lossless audio files). If you are using flac files the headunit doesnt matter anyway. You will have a digital sound processor after the headunit to make it worth while and the real audiophiles will have an optical connection from a high res player connected directly to the DSP by passing any headunit. The modern android units sound as good as any iphone or samsung phone when it comes to processing audio. So if you are happy with listening to music through your phone (whether its headphones or bluetoothed to something) you will be happy with the android. If you wanna go all out, get a decent DSP, tune the sound stage in the car (ditch the dash speakers which bounce on the windscreen fyi) and run the android through that. The DSP will tune away any issues of the android and sound great, like properly great even for music streaming. If you haven't looked in to aftermarket DSP yet, you defs dont need to worry about audio quality, like the online audiophiles make out.... :P Keep in mind there is a massive group of people that believe vinyl records sound better than digital music......... They are probably all virgins. :P

      @@ZeroTo60Tube hahahaha they probably are! Your reasoning is already way beyond the reasons they give which is not more than " its just cheap chinese crap", "it will sounds so bad" and "you will regret it trust me bro". I am not even looking to upgrade the oem speakers amp or DSP. I will be using mp3. I can't hear the difference between FLAC and mp3 when I listen to it with decent headphones. Also the only upgrade I want to do is a new stereo and a sub since my car didn't come with the factory sub. I am not sure if I will have to get a new amp for the sub or if the factory amp has a channel for it since a lot e53 came with a factory sub in the back? Thanks a lot for answering my question by the way. I am once again very excited to get a cool looking tons of feature packed android unit!

Because they are no longer being used I was wondering what they did also the other plug has 4 wires going into it what are they for? Because of the 6m harness I have the canbus module will now be in the boot, I was just wondering if you knew of any downsides to putting the canbus adapter in the boot rather than behind the radio and having to run the chunky extension harness to the radio. Cheers.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pins that dont get used are mainly for the original screen. However there are few other signal wires in them, that are no longer needed now that the factory radio is being bypassed. It doesnt matter where your can bus module is located. As long as its in the can bus line somewhere.
