@@sharonlee4773- Fair enough, you disagree, no need to be so hateful. I'm wondering why you're actually here - just fancied listening to an "average" song, did you?
A beautifully sincere number. Ashcroft's pain is very apparent here. The loss of love is one of the most crushing pains any human can experience. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. And yet it's something most of us must deal with at some point. Life, eh??
+Friedrich Nietzsche Yeah I remember listening to this a lot in 1999 when I broke up with my 1st girlfriend who I'd been out with from 16 to 19, biggest deal in the world at that time .... can barely remember her name now. Only when I park outside her house on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and SUnday nights (she works late Tuesdays) do I even think about her now.
I relive these lyrics, and moments upon every breath. The mother of my eldest had our history before she died of cancer. She left our 2 yr old son - who is now 14. We are not yet done...
Pure genius. Ashcroft always been against the programmers of society. Cost him the spot light his talents deserved. A loyal following recognises his true talent. One of the best lyrically.
Wander thro' each charter'd street, Near where the charter'd Thames does flow, And mark in every face I meet Marks of weakness, marks of woe. In every cry of every man, In every Infant's cry of fear, In every voice, in every ban, The mind-forg'd manacles I hear. How the Chimney-sweeper's cry Every blackning Church appalls; And the hapless Soldier's sigh Runs in blood down Palace walls. But most thro' midnight streets I hear How the youthful Harlot's curse Blasts the new-born Infant's tear, And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse.
@@pedrofaria7451 I preferred The Verve to British bands like Oasis, Blur, Pulp, The Stone Roses, Massive Attack, Travis I love only Depeche Mode, Radiohead and Suede that much.
with you on that , A northern Soul album as an album is probably the best , and last of their psychodelic early stuff . "No Come Down" a lesser known of their albums (in between "Storm In Heaven " and " A Northern Soul") is well worth getting
Seemingly just fell apart after the reunion tours in 2007/2008. Richard Ashcroft is solo again, Nick McCabe and Simon Jones formed a new band called Black Submarine. Their album "New Shores" is amazing.
A masterpiece, but probably one of the saddest songs I've known. Richard really experienced so much for such a young man. And he's still standing tall. Good for you, Mr. Ashcroft! :)

this is a very moving song. the lyrics and the way it sounds. I love 90's music. so much authenticity. this band was really great and had a lot of unique songs. I can relate a lot to their music and it's a comfort to me to listen to it, especially in these uncertain times
I simply can't believe that such piece of art has so few visits. The Verve must be the most mistreated band by de music industry. This guys deserved much more success.
They were not a normal band. A Northern Soul nearly killed them and they weren't as big as bands that came up behind them. It's a bona fide masterpiece. It's not one man's work, it's a group masterpiece
You’re right every song on NS is credited to the band. People assume Urban Hymns was created the same and it wasn’t. Half of it is RH solo material and for me loses the magic of what the band did on NS
this song takes me back to when houston flooded (1998) nd i had to take all these back ways to get to work and when i got there i was the only one that even attempted to show up. this song carried me all the way-- almost an hour of hazardous flooded roads. i hit repeat on this song & prayed like heck.
It was always round my mates house, 3 of us had all just split up with our girlfriends at the same time and we used to drink strong vodka and tonics, fat lines of coke, smoke ciggies until the sun came up and just carry right on through the day til the night came again. Messy but its what we had to do.....
This is their peak for me. A perfect apex just catching them between the spaced out sound-scapes and the more predictable acoustic sing alongs. Perfect song.
I knew this was an amazing song when I was younger , but now I’m older I can fully appreciate the quality of this song , always takes me back to my youth.
