using the BOTE ROVER for the FIRST TIME will this MICRO SKIFF work for me?

  • I need to get some experience with the new Bote Rover. After messing around with it on this particular day, I've learned three important facts.
    1. It's going to take at least 3 months to get the hang of this new fishing platform.
    2. Catching fish off the Bote Rover WILL BE DIFFICULT in the beginning.
    3. The Bote Rover does NOT do well in the wind.
I will continue to document my learning experience on the Bote Rover.

Hey Nick, I just got a Bote Rover and I took it out for the first time today. The 9.9hp does have some power for this little skiff. It was pretty sketchy at first but after a while I got comfortable. I fish the South Texas waters as well and hope to see you out one day!

  • @LetsGetBiblical207

Exactly, I have an Ascend 128T that I rigged a trolling motor to, mainly that just gets me to where I want to fish, then I paddle around. Once I saw this solo skiff I figured if I had one I would use it the same way, motor to get in the general area then paddle around and fish

Lots of folks buying these lately.
Check out how Lawson Lindsey has his set up; he does a lot of stealth sneaking up on fish in mangroves which is similar to marsh conditions.
My suggestion would be to put a trolling motor on the front, which will balance the weight a lot. The 9.9 is great for covering lots of water but if you’re going straight to a marsh, unloading, and dropping right in a mile or less from where you plan to fish...I’d say maybe consider removing it for those marsh trips and only use the trolling motor.
You can always pop the outboard back on for more open water situations, tougher conditions or longer runs.
You definitely want a tiller extension if you’re keeping any outboard!
Good luck with it, and give it some time & lots of practice 😀

It can be scary but you have to get that throttle up so your boat can get down on plane, if you sit at mid throttle your nose will stay up, your tiller could probably use an extension and you won’t have to play with your seating too much. You were right to not go very fast on choppy water though, im gonna love to see the new fishing adventures with this thing

  • @jtee9548
    @jtee9548 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, that got a little scary. Too little boat with too much motor! You are a brave man. Looks like super fun in calm water. A smaller motor might only cost you 10% or less in top speed, like less than 1mph for 50lb weight saving and a possible increase in fuel economy. You could power like a 16 foot aluminum boat with that Suzuki! Good video, well done.

  • @michaelhaynes8388

You just got to get use to "your" equipment. As you say, it's going to be a Learning Curve. Like other have said, ensure you have your toolbag and extras if or when your need a repair on the water. Believe me, there is nothing like being DOW...Dead on the Water without self-recovery equipment. Also, suggest moving your equipment forward to get on plane faster and to balance your boat...Lastly, as suggest placing rod holders on your cooler to have better visibility while driving and if a hook comes unloose (hook in the eye). Good Luck and Tight Lines Always.

Practice makes perfect, take it out as much as possible just to get used to it, IDLE SPEED....factory settings on new motors when it comes to IDLE can really be near "cutting out", if it gives you a lot of trouble, let them check it in the SHOP, one of my boats years ago had the same but a lot worse problem....also avoid crossing those swells at an ANGLE (until you get used to the rocking)......try to keep almost head on or run WITH them.....years of rough water boating in windy North Texas speaking here......the Bote looks good Nick, it will be great in the Marsh!

Hey Nick as for using your Jerry cans as your primary gas can here's an idea get a extra gas cap for one of your Jerry cans an get a gas line fittings for a bigger boat and hook it through the center of your gas cap with the gas line feeding down in the bottom of the tank so you can hook your gas line to your Jerry cans and eliminate the big gas can and just have the two small ones

Hey Nick it probably be a good idea to go to the 6 horse motor to save weight but you might look into a hydrofoil to help keep the bow of the boat down and help keep it from chin walking and something you might want to look into it might be hard to find to fit one to fit inside the boat Rover it on hooks onto the bottom of your motor

In the future when you launch, you need to actually back your truck in the water just enough so tail pipe is sticking out (get rid of rear bar). Then jump in the back of your truck and shove it out without ever having to get in the water. Load all weight in trk bed with motor and strap down tight front and back and you won’t need rear bar.

Hey that looked scary. I use a 2hp Honda on my 8ft.Walker Bay more than fast enough and trolls down slower than my electric. Tiller has a friction lock screw which I can lean turn and would be hard pressed to burn $2.00 of gas a day. I catch the biggest Rainbow Trout for hundreds of miles. More poundage than most of the Salmon Fisher's who fish the salt water. Weight is the biggest factor in boat speed. Happy you made it home alive but hay you could always come up to the Naniamo BC bathtub boat race to Vancouver BC. I'm sure you would win.

Was your motor turning on its own? You might have to tighten the collar for a little bit more steering resistance if that's the case. I have 6HP Suzuki and I love that thing to death. It has an internal tank and one fill will run on full throttle for about 45-50mins. My tank will fill it 4 times so I about a 3hour runtime with my set-up. Good stuff!!! Is this an inflatable or is it a hard shell vessel?

I'm pretty sure maximum outboard size is 5 or 6hp, that might be why your having difficulty controlling the skiff

Why don't they build the things with an extra ten inches of width for stability. Little more room too for comfort

What you paid for it you'd get a good second hand boat with comfort and much more stable to narrow of a boat for such a big engine hate to lose it. Best of luck with your toy it's a lovely looking boat
