Hate aics mags…. I do not want a protruding magazine on a hunting rifle .. period . I have also heard all the complaints about the original rotary mag breaking. I have no idea what people do with their magazines to make them break. I have a gen 1 first run American with the plastic follower in the rotary mag which was made metal the following year and I have never had a failure . I mean , I imagine if you threw it on the ground it would break…. Other than that I don’t know what folks are doing. Unless they are literally failing from the factory or something. But yeah I know it’s “tacti-cool” to have some sort of protruding magazine but most folks aren’t western hunters shooting from a bipod most of us are in elevated stands or in a tree , and protruding mags are problematic for that .

I've done a lot of hunting on the ground and in stands and have never encountered any issue with the whole inch or so exposed on a 5rnd AICS pattern mag. Regardless, if your position is that you do not want any exposed mag, it makes virtually no sense to go with any variety of detachable box mag. Completely flush mags and most states magazine limits on hunting rifles would be limiting the capacity to where you should probably just go with a fixed internal magazine instead of any detachable mag anyway

All good to me , I like the rotary mag in the American , I just do, sure in most scenarios , I don’t have my rifle in a position where the mag matters , but there is the occasional time when I do. @@Calaveras32Spcl fair enough I have a 2014 American all weather compact…it wasn’t expensive…it’s built way better than the Gen 1’s they’ve been building for the last few years…that said these new ones are well built and offer a lot right out of the box. They don’t really need to make a regular and compact model now, since the LOP is adjustable…appealing for someone like me with 2 kids. The compact I have, for my daughters, has a fixed 12.5” LOP, which might be too long when they first start shooting and might get too short as they grow. So with something like the Gen 2 I could buy the spacer kit (annoying it isn’t just included, and they’re charging $30 for black plastic)…and I’d have a rifle that goes from 12” to 12.75” to 13.25” to 13.75”
Final length…could be a lifetime rifle for a youth to adult.

I also have both and many other Ruger rifles.
I personally just find they fit my preferences in general and I'm going to find tradeoffs from one to the other no matter what they do.
And this hasn't been an exception. Which I like more is going to come to what I'm hunting in what particular conditions.
Both these are big game rifles. My 308 has been modified to the point there isn't a discernable difference but don't have buyers remorse.
My main thing is I like Ruger magazines.
An AR or AK platform is the only thing I prefer if sometimes just tolerate a magazine sticking out.
But this is just me and my personal preferences.
Pretty much any firearm is a tool and I ask myself what is the right job for this tool.
One of my favorites is a 12ga Remington bolt action Goose Hunting model.
That's like a 20oz claw hammer. It's really versatile tool if I was forced to pick only one to get by with.😅

What's wrong with a fluted barrel? Has more surface area to cool down faster and it's lighter without sacrificing strength. Spiral fluted barrels are actually MORE rigid than standard barrels. They say spiral fluted barrels also equalize the gas pressure as well but idk about that.

I don't have a problem with the spiral fluted barrel.
My problem with the gen 2 is the barrel length.
I would rather have a 22 inch barrel, threaded or not.
I don't need the extra muzzle blast from a brake, especially on an already low recoil 7mm-08.
Also, a lot of us can't afford a suppressor that costs more than the rifle and the extra tax fee the feds want to rape us with.
      Just my 2 cents.....
