It's a solo instrument, not an orchestra, so the player can take freedom with the tempo. Also, if you actually read the sheet music, the A section is andante, while the B section is Molto adagio e dolorido with rall. and rit. throughout the piece.

João Machado Yes, keeping the tempo is absolutely essential. Rubatos and all those should be done careully and with meaning. All pieces need continuity and flowness. you can play slow sometimes too, but the sentimentalities should be done careully too, because if you mess up with the tempo and with excessive rubatos the piece looses power and meaning. You can fall asleep listening to it.
Yes, you are absolutely right. And that was precisely what i was going to write. The guitar's musical possibilities are somehow isolated from the rest of the instruments, either from the musical or technical point of view. In some way, destroying the tempos like this is possible and "admissible" in the guitar as if it was a demonstration of expression, but if you are a serious listener and pretend to play the guitar in a serious way in a concert hall, messing up with the tempo the way many guitarist do is inadmissible in my opinion, because the piece, the music loses meaning. We, as guitarist and guitar lovers, shouldn't let ourselves isolate this instrument from the rules and values of the rest of the musical community.

Classical music has a tempo set in the work. There is a little freedom but not as in jazz, pop etc.

Feeling is one thing. Classical guitar clichés is other. These kind of "expression" makes us look ridiculous amongst other classical musicians.
