    I’d like to see the guts of an air conditioner used to cool both the water in that air to water intercooler. Yes it adds a little weight but the water can be kept just above zero. Would make for an interesting test. Maybe you guys could do a collaborative thing with the guys at HVACR Videos. The days of getting ice would be over.

    If you have ice left after a run that means you have room for improvement. If the water moves to quickly through the core it isn't in there long enough to absorb all the heat it can. Works in a similar way if you take the complete thermostat out of your cooling system. Without the restriction the water flow is to fast and your engine can run hotter. That's why if you don't want to run a thermostat you just take out the middle so there is still a restriction. You can even purchase restriction plates to put in when you don't run a thermostat.

    • @dudemcgee256
      @dudemcgee256 ปีที่แล้ว

      Q (Energy) = 500 x f x DeltaT (in F)
      Q = rate of heat transfer (Btu/hr.)
      f= flow rate (gallons per minute or gpm)
      DeltaT = temperature change (degrees F)
      This is the calculation for BTU transfer using water. If you'll notice, flow rate is a major contributing factor to heat exchange. The faster the water moves, the more heat exchange happens. This is why electric water pumps are horsepower limited depending on flow rate. This is the same principle as the radiator. Less air flow lowers the cooling capacity which is why you need fans. Water is no different.
      The reason an engine can run hotter with no thermostat is heat soak. Eventually the radiator will heat up to the same temperature as the engine because it is never allowed to cool. The thermostat allows all of the fluid in the radiator to cool to ambient temperature so that when the thermostat opens, the engine receives a large amount of cooled liquid. If the liquid is never allowed to cool, as soon as air stops flowing over the radiator it will begin to heat up because it is already the same temperature as the engine. As long as the vehicle is moving it isn't an issue, but as soon as you stop you'll begin to overheat. This concept is the entire reason cars come with cooling fans to begin with. They knew that heat exchange needs flow to work. A good set of electric fans with a shroud and adjustable temp control will mitigate this. The stock fans usually don't flow enough to overcome this phenomenon when running without a thermostat as they are designed to not come on until the vehicle gets too hot for comfort (usually around 220 degrees) Hope this clears everything up for you.

    I always see "1000 HP rated" etc when I am looking at cores. Are these numbers the manufacturers throw around based on a supply of ice water and only 1/4 mile worth of use? How much of an upscale in intercooler core size would you need to make if you were using ambient air to cool the water (large ducted radiator) and on boost for something like a standing mile, or even a few time attack laps?

  • @lucaseaston

    When you are cruising with little to no boost wouldn't it be best to leave the water pump on? If the pump is on, the intercooler is going to act as a radiator, cool unboosted air flowing through it will remove the heat from the water, keeping temps down for the next hard run.

    How would an air to water intercooler do for a twin turbo daily driver car? I am not overly concerned about if it would cool the air intake temperature adequately because I imagine that it would. However I am concerned about using an air to water intercooler in the winter. As water expands when it freezes and I have seen many things break because of this.
