True story. This happened this past Monday. A customer came up to my seafood counter. She had on this dress that was kinda flowing in the air and I said "You make me think of a line from a song." She said what song and said year of the cat. She had never heard of it and asked what line was it and I said " She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like the water running in the rain." She said "Oh my God that's so beautiful! Then I just recited the entire first lyrics and she asked me the name of the song again and who sung it. She immediately goggled it and started listening to it. She loved it and thanked me for telling her about it. Im 65 she was probably 32-34. I said no problem and said you missed alot of great music!
This, and 'Baker Street' by Gerry Rafferty define a certain excellence in atmosphere and a certain sense of a snapshot of time during the mid to late 1970s.
Yeah it's weird that songs do that. But everyone's "atmosphere" that they relate to the song must be different, yet somehow somewhat the same, too. I wonder if more recent eras, people will look back on with less yearning and nostalgia because so much of it has been recorded because of the internet & cell phones? The 70s, 80s and 90s have a kind of veiled nostalgia because we didn't have as many ways of preserving events & moments so well...we have to rely on our own memories. What do you think?
They make me think of a rainy 🌙 night. Where the lights from the headlights and traffic signals, reflect their warm street colors into the streets, on a summer night. 🌟 🐅
My late husband and I used to love to listen to this song cuddled in bed. We enjoyed listing to music together and remembering the old days. His favorite cologne was Patchouli too. Smelled so nice on him. Such beautiful memories. Still can’t believe we won’t have those nights again 😢
Sweet peep - great resurrection on the future cards for all dead loved ones... We're all going to meet up again... Eternity was put into our hearts... We'll welcome them back... Account of Lazarus convinced me...
When a teenager (started between junior and senior year in high school) I worked in dangerous oil field as a rough neck (and did so in summers between college years) - because it paid very well. And used the money to buy audiophile grade equipment. This song has always been a pleasure to listen to on such gear.
What has changed that we aren't doing the same stuff today.. something has gone wrong with the new generations.. why? i am 64 and i am so lucky to have lived thru all these classics..

This song makes me want to put a headphone and walk through the park on a rainy day, aimlessly... One of the best songs ever written. Thanks, Al Stewart. From Brazil.
One of the best instrumental sections of a song ever! the writer of that instrumental section where it goes from guitar to electric guitar to saxophone is absolutely brilliant. that transfer to the saxophone takes my breath away every time I hear it.
Grateful too growing up in the 70s and college in the 80s; certainly a time with its challenges-but we approached it with optimis, hope and some feeling of togetherness.. unlike today's despair and selfishness.
Al Stewart composed a beautiful arrangement of instrumentals piano, solo guitar and saxophone, wonderfully crafted musicians, even in 2022 this song is a standout.
God... they just don't do it like that anymore. Music now is so... empty, but that song is just, well... full. There's so much there and it all comes together to make one of my most treasured musical memories.

I like the idea that Al played the guitar in this song. Most people just sing with a band. But Al was a guitar player and was one of the best. I remember in the beginning of 77 I heard it all the time. year of the cat, OMG.
Incredible song. It takes me back to a better time, when human's for the most part trusted each other. One could live without the feeling of big brother watching us. I play Al Stewart daily as a form of escape of today and delve into that era.

Every lyric is poetry, the music ethereal. One of my favorite songs. "You know sometime you're bound to leave her, but for now you're going to stay, in the year of the cat."
Pivot man Farming, where is your home base ? You got to have good music when you're traveling I-70 through Colorado. It's not nearly as scenic as people would expect it to be.
I remember listening to this song in early 1977 (after being in the Army for 18 months).. Brought back many memories from that time. Makes one wish if it was possible to go back in time and change what I could back then and in subsequent years. So glad the song is viewed so favorably after 47 years passed by.
After Snow skiing in Michigan my Buddy and I headed back to Toledo--I was in the back seat of his car with my future wife and we were so exhausted and cold from skiing--this song came on and it was transcending to say the least--It was an instant hit and total flashback to a wonderful night in the back seat of his car.

What a beautiful piece of Art! The piano harmonies, the sweeping orchestral violins, the guitar & sax solos ... and the cherry on top ... Al Stewart!!!
Hard to believe this song turns 47 years old in 2 weeks......the memories are overwhelming me right now....a better time and better life, and much better music!
Honestly, it is one of the Best Musical Compositions I have Heard to date. It makes me remember my stupid things I did when I was young, my parents, my poor family, my friends, school, profession and work. Really, how this generation has changed. There are no values, they don't care about anything !
I remember buying the album when it first came out , I was young , strong no aches or pains 😊 Well , at least this incredible musical masterpiece remains the same ❤️
Wow, so very beautiful, the rush of memories that come flooding back, as a young boy in the 70's listening to this, it was the time of my life, the memories are as clear as the day this song came out. Beautiful

I'm 7 years old sitting the back of my Dad's white station wagon and I hear this song constantly on the radio. Something about it, even as a kid, something about the lyrics. Who is this mysterious woman he sings of and in what part of the world does this song take place in? These are questions I had at 7 and I have now at 54. Everything about this song is perfect, the lyrical poetry, the musicianship, the feeling that I'm going on an adventure when I listen to this song. It is just such a cool, cool, song.
This song was a snapshot in time when I was leaving an abusive group home the day this song came out walking to my own apartment 45 years ago, now 45 years later I hear it before going into surgery as I drift off to sleep in the surgery unit playing in the background, it is such a symbolic song and it's been with me for so many years, and it truly is the epitome when they say that music touches feelings that words cannot!
I had the greatest pleasure to see this band a few years ago now, and all I can say is, what a truly wonderful and pleasurable experience that was. The audience were in rapture 😍, the voice was just the same, such a polished band and performance. An unforgettable night from the magical Al Stewart. 👌👏👏👏
I saw Al Stewart at the Santa Barbara Bowl in 1977. It was a fantastic experience. I also saw him at the Midstate Fair in Paso Robles in about 2015, with Plsyer, Orleans, Christopher Cross and a couple other performers.
Amazing performance--my favourite--every instrument is stunning. The piano is so distinct and gorgeous; the electric guitars are on point. All the instruments have the focus time and meld together. The lyrics and voice of Al Stewart bring everything together. Glorious 70s sound.
This song has special meaning to me. My now husband for 33 years & I went out for drinks the first time & we went back to his place & we were smooching! I am a Leo & I needed to get home. Year of the Cat came on & we just laid there waiting for the song to be over. Gratefully we’ve had 33 years of the Cat! “Me”

It IS like a cat!
On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolour in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat
She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
The year of the cat
Well, she looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
The year of the cat
Well, morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away the choice and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the new-born day
I know sometimes you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat

Peace From London. 🙏
Every lyric is poetry, the music ethereal. One of my favorite songs.
"You know sometime you're bound to leave her, but for now you're going to stay, in the year of the cat."
Agree!!!
I love this song being 20 years old driving trucks across the I 70 to Denver all night long listening to it brings back great memories with my dad
Pivot man Farming, where is your home base ? You got to have good music when you're traveling I-70 through Colorado. It's not nearly as scenic as people would expect it to be.
Amazing song. The world never will get singers, songs, poets, as we had in 80's. The best years of this world.
This song has always put a mystical feeling over me like no other song.
A "Mystical feeling" is a good way to describe it.
The piano on this song is incredible
Who is that playing?
Peter John Wood who co wrote The Year of The Cat
Saw him perform live about three years ago. Just him and his guitar. Amazing 💛
Michelle, where was? What a privilege!
City Winery, NYC. Amazing.
Lucky you are!
Highly underrated song of the 70’s by a highly underrated artist.
Did not appreciate this song during my teen years, but now I definitely do! ♥️♥️
Underrated?? By who? Its one of most popular songs of that era lol
I remember listening to this song in early 1977 (after being in the Army for 18 months).. Brought back many memories from that time. Makes one wish if it was possible to go back in time and change what I could back then and in subsequent years. So glad the song is viewed so favorably after 47 years passed by.
Absolutely wonderful. A classic that has stood the test of time. ❤❤
Um grande clássico🎤🎹 não me canso de ouvir.Belissimo🌹🌺
2023 the year of the cat!!!!!!
Beautiful instrumentals and words to this song, it is one of the most beautiful songs of the 1970's and still is today!!!!!
I love that you could sing 🎶 along to a song that told a story. Wonderful ❤
Such a gorgeous song filled with so much imagery

Great song writing, great performances by all those playing, you just don't see that much talent in one place and one song anymore.
God I love this song. You don't even have to be a CAT LOVER like I am!
I was so fortunate to see Al Stewart in concert in Fresno, CA. And then after the show I sat and talked to him. He was so charming.
wow🐈 lucky you !
That's cool
What a beautiful piece of Art! The piano harmonies, the sweeping orchestral violins, the guitar & sax solos ... and the cherry on top ... Al Stewart!!!
Oh my gosh, yes! It's got all the instrumentation. And the lyrics are just haunting.
Meu Deus que voz é está ? Realmente éramos muito feliz só por ter pessoas iguais está banda que falava de amor ❤️ pra os quatro canto do mundo 😍
Beautiful
⏳🌟🌟🍇 MAGNIFICENT SONG....I PLAYED THE LEAD PARTS, ON MY GUITAR 🎸 AT HOME, IN 1976** after buying this great Album. Michael W.Johnson retired in Modesto California_______
Sensacional, explendida, magnifica, maravilhosa, essa é a canção mais linda de todos os tempos...
Boy, that saxophone just OWNS the room.
Great and beautiful song🎶🎵🎶❤️

I'm 7 years old sitting the back of my Dad's white station wagon and I hear this song constantly on the radio. Something about it, even as a kid, something about the lyrics. Who is this mysterious woman he sings of and in what part of the world does this song take place in? These are questions I had at 7 and I have now at 54. Everything about this song is perfect, the lyrical poetry, the musicianship, the feeling that I'm going on an adventure when I listen to this song. It is just such a cool, cool, song.
I believe it takes place in Morocco because of the hint of Casablanca (bogart movie) plus the reference to blue-tiled walls in the alleys, etc.
Now, This was and still is GOOD MUSIC
Such a beautiful song man. Gorgeous performance. Actually flawless

Always loved the song, hus unique voice and the guitar solo.
Eddie Van Helen en the piano
Una obra de arte, músicos de conservatorio señoras y señores, una joya musical. Que vuelvan los clasicos.
Hermosura
Melodia espetacular....um sonho❤❤❤❤❤❤❤amo tudo na música.
Amazing performance--my favourite--every instrument is stunning. The piano is so distinct and gorgeous; the electric guitars are on point. All the instruments have the focus time and meld together. The lyrics and voice of Al Stewart bring everything together. Glorious 70s sound.
a classic, been listening to this song for the last 45 years
This song has special meaning to me. My now husband for 33 years & I went out for drinks the first time & we went back to his place & we were smooching! I am a Leo & I needed to get home. Year of the Cat came on & we just laid there waiting for the song to be over. Gratefully we’ve had 33 years of the Cat! “Me”
Thanks for listening. Just because it means so much to me doesn’t mean anyone else wants to read about it!❤
Esta canción tiene una magia increíble
In the 70's I didn't like this song, but today I think it is a masterpiece - so wonderful
A beautiful song transporting you to different landscapes, each with a focus defined by a distinct instrument. A true gift to those who listen to it.
