Beverly Johnson was the first black model on Vogue. I am old enough to remember that they preferred the light skinned models. It was only until Iman and Grace Jones who were able to create their own path in addition to modeling that we started seeing dark skinned black models. Beverly Johnson became popular in the 70s. We get hate from EVERYONE. Black folks hate us and whites do too. We are black in a racist world and light in a white supremist system. You all don't get it, because like claudia said you don't live it. We have to walk a line that makes everyone comfortable. And can't even tell the truth about your experiences. They are interpreted and described by others. Imagine black people trying to compare you to white folks who run a entire system. Been told I'm pretty for a black girl. Or that they don't usually like black girls but liked me... as an adult. I sit and watch the dark-skinned women. Berate the light skin coworkers daily. Solely off of color. Ie: you know why that happened on the shift. Them light ones allow anything. Without ever caring if it's offensive or hurtful. And I am not light skinned. But it's as offensive as being told your pretty for being dark skinned. Colorist are all colors. My fair skinned light eyed co worker was in tears when our boss said to her how the lighter the eyes and skin the sneakier the person.

See? This is why getting an education is important or at least being well read. Lisa Raye cannot articulate her thoughts to save her life and she often sounds unintelligent...as well as Vivica.
