The best answer to "how much should you invest in your hobby" is "more time, probably less money"

In German there is a term "Vorfreude". Its the joy before the actual event. Like if your all excited going to an amusement park.
Sometimes a little "Vorfreude" is all I need and you get a lot of it buy buying new stuff.
You're all excited about going home, build and paint the models and finally play with them. In the end they might stay in the box for years but the joy you got was still there.
Is that the same as retail therapy? It certainly sounds similar.
@@andrewcook3983 It's more general. Its basically joy in anticipation of something. No relation to buying or something. Could be upcoming holiday, date, whatever. Literal translation would be "pre-joy".

For most of my 20's I was into building cars. I got used to spending $200 for an Air Filter, $1,000 for a flash tune, $3,000 for an exhaust, $4,000 of wheels and tires, $3,000 on a turbo. And on and on it goes. Building cars is all telephone numbers when it comes to cost and that doesn't even take into consideration if you like to take your car to the race track for some hot laps. Now I'm in my late 30's I've recently gotten back into board gaming and spending $80 on a boxed set and $60 here and there for an expansion with $100 in paint all seems like a really affordable hobby. The hardest thing I find is finding the time to paint everything.
A short time ago, I was talking to a guy who was absolutely seething with anger over some boxed game release that he was not able to buy for a whole bunch of reasons that I guess made sense to him. Eventually I asked why he cared so much about - why he was so invested in - what amounts to some bits of plastic and cardboard and his answer boiled down to that he had waited on it, wanted it so much and the company was keeping it from him unfairly and therefore had betrayed him. That's the dark side of being invested way too much in a release or the hobby in general, and then having something not live up to the expectation. The anger was palpable.
Yeah I'm seeing this more and more in the 40k community, a lot of people have been incredibly angry over the warzone charadon narrative books because some of the rules can be used in matched play, so people have been complaining that it's not fair that they don't have access to the full set of rules without the books, which confuses me since it's not like everyone uses every rule at all times. So if there's say a supplement for a subfaction you don't play, why should that matter to you? I think a lot of people are getting really overinvested in the hobby nowadays to the point that they feel the need to have everything for their army even if they don't really need it, and this is starting to lead to a cult of outrage where people aren't satisfied with some of GW's business decisions, and "don't like it, don't buy it" isn't a good enough solution for these people.

You make a really important point which I think can be easily forgotten when we're in the middle of the hobbying process. It's very much about being reasonable with our expectations and maintaining something which is sustainable and enjoyable.
As a person who has been painting sporadically for 3 years but who hasn't actually played an actual game (yet, soon)... it's important to keep in mind the end goal and that's what has really gotten me going in the past month to get my army to a playable state. The investment I put in to buying models and allocating time is something I've been more critical about as of late and this video really identifies a route which we should be aware as of a community.

How many of us are there, do you think? I've been painting 40K, Bloodbowl, I just got the dominion box... and I have yet to play a single game (with the exception of some intro games that my wife played with me out of pity)

I recently realized I might have bitten off more than I can chew. I bought the rulebook for AoS 2.0 on the same day that the Kill Team/Ork previews, only to realize afterwards that my group might never actually play AoS, and that I also don't play enough 40k to justify the large amounts of money I've invested into plastic crack.
Also, AoS 3.0 is now out. That can't feel too great. (Not that you're obligated to play the latest edition; there are people who still play really early Warhammer Fantasy Battles editions).

You don't have to even play to justify it, if it makes you happy just building/painting/collecting then that is reason in itself.

@@clockworkpanda8 @josephskiles Thats well and good for you primarily artistic lot. I think of my minis and terrain as an investment into the social experience of playing 40k/AoS that has kind of decreased in value with the decline in interest of my playgroup. Painting up a necron and salamander army did get me through the quarantine, but as the quarantine ended none of my friends want to play which is a major buzzkill as far as hobby enjoyment and regret.
Uncle Atom, there's a fourth thing you invest: emotions. I see so many people get emotionally invested in their favourite IP, be it a game, novel series, or movie franchise, and they invariably get upset when the owner of the IP takes it in a direction they don't like.

Wow. Very accurate. I have seen that 1st hand and suffered from it myself.... emotional investment in a hobby is quite common & the way GWs plays with its 'canon lore' can be draining
It was on full display during you-will-not-be-missed-gate. Lots of people were heavily invested in 40K as a hobby that would be safe for obnoxious chuds, and when it was revealed that it wasn't, they went apoplectic.
Every model I have in 40k was purchased from selling painted minis for 40k. So… yeah, great vid Atom! Also, Black Templars! Whooo!

Dude your not kidding about being a little salty after being behind an entire 3 hour game and then finally losing, usually during the game you want to lose and you want it to be over. Games where you have a fighting chance the whole time feel a whole lot better losing, feels like and is a good game.
As I've aged, the term "investment" is the key factor to what I play/build/model. My friends know when I go all-in on a project...it's all-in. Table, terrain, fully painted minis, etc. So that translates to hundreds if not thousands of hours over time. So, when I look at a new shiny miniature or game, I put it in that context. "Oh those vikings look cool..." = "Will I buy and build a table, a fully viking village, several ships, several warbands, etc...". It has made my decisions much easier. If it's not worth 200+ hours of eventual hobby (often spanning several years) I don't buy into it. That same investment is why I quit 40K years ago, and again recently after trying 8th edition. A beautiful table - beautiful terrain, two beautifully painted armies...and every single game I came away completely disappointed. Not by losing (I won enough), but just by the completely shit rules and the fact that I simply didn't enjoy it. That was way too much time and effort invested..to not have fun.

I stopped building and painting models quite some time ago. While the building is fun and interacting, I always found painting to be a slog and a toll on my mental health. It did not matter if I took 3 hours or 3 months to paint a mini, I always felt disappointed with my work. However, being a massive fan of Black Library and imagining/creating characters, chapters, warbands, kabals etc., I found that what I enjoy about the hobby is creating stories and characters. So now my hobby budget goes into buying books, White Dwarf, the occasional codex if I want to take a deeper dive into a faction.
I honestly dont care if I win or lose, its about enjoying my hobby and having fun with my friends.

Great video, reminds me a little of your other video where you talk about how we do things that are forms of entertainment but don't really think of them as a hobby. In actuality playing video games and keeping up with a television program, keeping up with a sports team or collecting movies are all a large time, money and head space investment.
This is part of the reason I don't play in tournaments. In narrative play, you can always "call it" on a game if it is out of hand rather than waste more time on game that is already done. Sometimes a 3hr army level game is tightly contested and a lot of fun. But sometimes they can get out of hand early, or by mid-game, and in those situations the people I play narrative campaigns with usually just call the game early and move on to the next one. No one wants to slog through a bad game, we want to have fun.

I teach fencing, a sport that tends to attract a similar type to tabletop gaming. When I run kids competitions, I tend to run quick and easy games, so the winning and losing don't bulk so large.

I like skirmish games (god I hope new Kill Team turns out good!) exactly because I can invest time and headspace to kitbash/create lore for couple of cool minis and when I finally hook up with my friends play a game or two, have a bear and do whatever else we want because playing a game doesn't mean wasting half of a day on it alone. I love individuality in minis (RPG player myself) witch is too big of an investment for me to do with a whole army
This was my covid hobby. I spent a lot of money right up front buying the models and paints for Warcry/Kill Team. Ive found I love reading the lore and assembling is therapeutic but painting is not fun at all for me. I dont regret buying because I can use them for Dungeons and Dragons but I still have my work cut out for me. Your videos have helped a lot. Compare yourself to only yourself, take your time etc.
I actually like the painting but absolutely dread putting models together. My dominant ( or what was anyhow) arm is mangled from an accident so just trying to hold small pieces of plastic together gets frustrating when you can't even make a fist. Using baking soda as an accelerant has been a life save for me
@@josephskiles Yeah I too have difficulty, I have really bad rheumatoid arthritis so my hands/fingers are deformed. I take my time but the fine motor movements are a hassle. Everything takes twice if not longer for me to accomplish but I take my time. Same with the painting, holding the brush for tiny little details is hard. Opening the pots etc, I feel you.
I don't know if this would help, Harbor Freight sells a set of small clamps called "Helping Hands". I'm sure other places sell them too.
@@victorc3121 I'm sorry you have to go through that as well! Hopefully it does help a little bit using your hands ! I know I have got a lot more movement out of my hand just from the small bit of exercise building and painting models has given me. At the end of 2019/ start of 2020 I couldn't even touch my fingers to my thumb very well but through time and these models I can now with barely any strain.
I hope this hobby has helped you with the mental and emotional stress caused by your issues as well! Not many people realize the toll such injuries take on our mental well being unless they have faced the same kind of problems! Take care of yourself!
@@clipperrn thanks I have tried tweezers with not much luck. My biggest problem is getting glue on my fingers and once the piece sets up I am stuck to the model and no matter how hard I try to be careful I always pull the two joined pieces apart. Baking soda really has helped me a lot though! Dropping almost microscopic pieces is another big problem, I went nuts over the head pieces on the House Escher gals for instance
I'm one of the people who has liked the Warhammer universe since it started coalescing in the 80's - but as I really suck at the handcraftier elements of miniature gaming, I never got to play many of their games except for Space Hulk and Necromunda. I do enjoy the Warhams lore, has read a few of the Warhammer books, and will occassionally play some of Slytherine's video games, but I can't say that I spend many hours weekly studying game fiction.
So I spend much hobby time preparing battle maps for VTT's, finding neat tokens, and learning about and testing out new miniature rule sets and VTTs. I suppose that this activity is not actually that different from painting and modelling, in that the preparation for a game can also be an enjoyable activity in and of itself.
But for me, it is ultimately about playing the game, and so that is where I (try to) spend the most of my limited time and dosh; I use VTTs and digital landscapes and tokens *because*, with my limited modelling skills, that gives me the best cost/benefit with regards to actually playing a fun miniature game with good friends.
Remember to consider smaller model scales: 15, 10, 6, 3mm etc.
You can get the big spectacle and massive battles without having to spend so much time or money on it. Cheaper terrain, smaller table space, easier painting, etc.
Tons of great games out there that either are designed for small model scales OR can be easily converted to use smaller scale models.
So many rulesets have the figure scale and ground scale waaay out of whack (IMO), they can be played with smaller scale minis/terrain without changing anything else. Some are very easy to do this with - Bolt Action, for example. Cheers!

great topic! another thing that tabletop gamers need to reflect on, but no one talks about.
i've found that (for me) the longer the 'payout' takes, the more volatile my emotions become. if my investment in painting pays out at the end of the night when i finish 1 model, pretty high earnings on that investment. if i batch paint a unit of 20 models, and after my 10th night of painting i hate them all and just want it finished so i drop your standards or speed up, the payout at the end of 20 is tumultuous at best.
same goes for games. i think you hit the nail on the head.
If it keeps me from wasting my money on other things I could be doing that are a lot worse for me then the answer is no, no matter how much I dump into the hobby
Skirmish games only for me. Moved away from GW games years ago. I can invest more time and effort in fewer minis in skirmish. At the moment Stargrave is my go to
I'm not currently interested in the gaming side of the hobby, although I got into miniature painting with the excuse of wanting miniatures for D&D... except we were in lockdown and I couldn't use minis for D&D. I just needed an excuse to start the hobby, which I'd been curious about for a long time. So I bought the D&D/Army Painter sets with colours and minis; I then bought 4 D&D boardgames for the miniatures (I'll probably never play the games much, even if they're real fun dungeon crawlers). After a few months I decided to try some Citadel paints, and I really really wanted minis on sprues, because I wanted to try building my miniatures, so I bought the AoS & 40K paint sets; I didn't like the Space Marines or the Necrons enough to go in that direction, so I decided to use the same excuse of "needing" minis for D&D (mind you, at this point I already had 150 unpainted fantasy miniatures in dusty boxes). Long story short: I bought Cursed City ("I need more skeletons and zombies for D&D!"), all the new Soulblight Gravelords range ("I really like this retro/weird aesthetic, great vamps for D&D!"), and Dominion ("I... I... I dunno, man. Orcs for D&D?"). I'm not planning on playing AoS, but I might try Underworlds and Warcry... ah, who am I kidding, I'm just gonna paint plastic til the day I die, alone and penniless.

Good video and worthwhile topic. For head-space, I actually reap a benefit to "relaxing" my mind by thinking about something creative like hobbies. Obviously, it's possible to take that to an extreme and get negative returns, but I'd be LESS balanced if I didn't have some hobby time.

Great video I hadn't taken a lot of though as to why I had been enjoying 1k and 1.5k point size 40k games as they are a lot quicker than the 2k standard. I definitely have thought about it now. And will look at that going forward.
There was a group of us locally who were going to play a kill team campaign but after seeing some of the new rules we have decided to hold off on the campaign until the new edition comes out. which is better for me as I've been hobbying on Kill team for a year now but have due to covid been unable to play any games of kill team so this means I don't have to learn one system and then imediately learn a new system when the new edition comes out.

bingo. i think you hit it right on here. When i play long games and lose or even just in general I feel drained at the end and i always wondered why. I think this is exactly why.
Underworlds fits this bill perfectly. Not a lot to buy the game or warbands, and games take like 45 min.
i invested in the hobby out of social reasons, it got me out the house, got a hobby, practicing fine motor skills, meeting friendly people and starting to get a cool army.
so was it worth investing all those things into the hobby?, absolutely and i only buy the models that i like or the battle force, apocalypse, starter boxes, i do like value for money

i experienced that 1k armies (40k and aos) are much more healthy for my personal work/life/hobby balance. U usually can use every model from a given range u want to, without painting 60 of X and 40 of Y + investing a brutal amount of money in these projects.

I'd say it depends on what you want out of the game. For me, I'm not as concerned about winning or losing during 40k... I want to host more of those cinematic games where there's a GM that might be able to add a twist to the battle partway through or have a third player join in while the two existing forces have already damaged them so either fighting tooth and nail to scrape out a victory or band together with your previous enemy to defeat the new threat.
I'm definitely not going to buy some of the really big models... troops are likely to be all I get, but I do want to get units from just about each army faction for use as little one-off enemies to use in a battle or something I can use during a normal RPG session
I will admit that I've invested a little too much in my hobby and ended up with a 4500 point Tau Empire army, although part of it has been panic buying before GW decides to up the prices mores.
It won't get used as a full army too often but I must admit I do like the spectacle of a large game, but I enjoy creating the army from background, building models and painting them.

I love the epic gameplay and sheer scale of a 40k game, two painted armies going at it on a fully painted game table is what gets me excited, honestly I think I would still build armies and just play war with all the pew pew sounds just as I did when I was 9 with my plastic Airfix soldiers and kits :)
Over the last year I have invested what is, for me, a lot of money into Necromunda, but not as much time as I probably should have (ie painting all these gangs) - the return on cash investment is definitely much higher if I have a completed/painted gang as opposed to an unbuilt box of grey plastic. Unless someones hobby is just collecting boxed kits, then they are way ahead of the rest of us ;-)
Not gonna lie:
Con: invest a lot, even while buying mostly with strong discounts and as eBay rescues.
Pro: I still get a lot of fun out of it, improve my creative and artistic skills that may help in my job (marketing with lots of design tasks), and the resell value may help to reward me all my investments in the long term (I already resold a few minis that I got for 185€ and sold for 240€. And my paint jobs are mediocre, at best.
So yeah, unless GW crashes hard in a few years, I might still be able to even have a bit of profit in the long run, so I would recommend the hobby, as it isn't just a money sink. Can't say the same about most sports I did in the past. Used sports gear only is worth a fraction of the current price. But miniatures do seem like a good investment for anyone who is patient enough to play the eBay game with them later on.
As I just today purchased a Cricut Maker 3 for a maker "tinkering" hobby of mine that can also be used for this one. I can justify the purchase because it crosses over, right?
I do like the big game setup but I am lucky in I am a solo gamer so can set up a big battle and go back to it. But also enjoy I quick skirmish game with small model count which use from my model I have..

Great advice Uncle Atom. I found your channel from your painting videos and don't play any of the wargames, so I don't know how much interaction that occurs during them. Does any interaction occur that isn't strictly about the actual combat during the game? I play a lot of DnD and generally, there is a lot of commentary that isn't strictly about the game. This is an additional factor for us when measuring enjoyment. We get to look back and say things like "remember when Dagos tried to unlock the door using his dagger and set off that trap that killed him?" and everyone laughs, even the player who it happened too. Of course, in 5e DnD, dead isn't always dead, so he might be ok. :)

I don’t play tabletop war games I just paint minis. I just went for six years on the cheapest tools I could afford. I have realized that since I’ve stuck with it so long, I don’t feel so bad for investing more time/money into it. I think it’s all perspective. I go through hobbies like water. Mini painting seems to be the only thing I have stuck with. I’m not great at it. But boy, it’s nice to play some music and throw down some paint
I have in the last 18 months only gamed with my son because, lockdown. So playing him we tend to find that the result is rarely close but could be won by either of us. It's fun regardless of the result. He is a sportsman. We occasionally have a firm and frank discussion over rules, but we clean the blood up together after. Having fun if you only win means your not having fun.

I enjoy a 500 point 40k combat patrol game these days. I get to play with the cooler toys kill team excludes but in a similar amount of time.
I find I'm not ever bothered losing a game of 40k than I am to a skirmish game like necromunda or inquisitor, because smaller warbands I put more time and effort into fleshing them out story wise, unlike a 40k army which I would look apon as a group of models rather than people with actual lives and history.
10 deaths is a tragedy; 200 deaths is a statistic...

Personally, I mostly just like painting models that I think look cool, and to me that justifies the cost and time far better than if I just wanted to play the game, since the process itself is what's meant to be enjoyed.
I don't have a 'pile of shame' because I have a rule for myself that I don't buy new models until I'm done painting the old ones, I'm also not in a big hurry, two hundred dollars spaced out over four months feels like a lot less than two hundred in one day, I like this a lot because I don't have much potential to overdo it and it also allows me to paint minis as well as I can with no regard to time.
However, I am still new-ish to the hobby so who knows if I'll really end up keeping with those rules.

Hard to get to upset from losing at a dice game at least for me
I always wanted to try out a big army game, but unfortunately I don't have they take too much space: I would need to get a new, bigger table, make tons and tons of new terrain pieces, and buy, assemble and paint even more minis, so yeah, right now I'd rather spend the time and effort on smaller games, I mean, I'd rather spend the money in a ton of new kill teams than in a single big 40k army.

My thing is that the games that are played are the big games, so skirmish games are a little limited around here. That said, I prefer AoS, and play with monster armies, so while the map might be big, I don't have a bunch of them anyway. Warcry doesn't let me take a team of giant dinosaurs, so it's somewhat limited. :)

I don't feel bad about losing, I just like to imagine the battle on the table! I will usually make bad decisions as long as it leads to more interest in the game. Plus I usually play 'evil' armies so losing is part of the bit.
The title alone is something you hear parents say for any hobby you start.
You are missing the point ! hahaha we like to get geeky and invested with our toy soldiers ! It is the whole point ! I am going to a 40k competitive tournament this sunday, and my imperial guard is going to get his ass kicked ! But I created a cool lore for my penal regiment, and that is what matters.

No, you're missing the point. You are describing what YOU get out of it. That's not wrong, but not everyone has the same satisfaction from the same things, and they're not wrong either. For some it's only the competition, for some it's the building/painting, for some it's the lore and stories, and so on. Adam's saying the newbie needs to decide what it is they want from the hobby, not what others say they should be getting out of it.

I find it more fun to play with eachother rather than against eachother.
But I am a casual player also.
I’ve started playing Kill Team and Warcry a bit ago and the headspace thing is kinda a non-issue for me, I don’t really fallow the lore of Warhammer. Like I know what each faction is or does but I’ve also found the lore to be kinda too serious for my flavor. I picked up a copy of Rogue Trader at a yard sale a couple years ago and I really liked the older lore they had it was chaotic and tongue in cheek never took itself too seriously which I really enjoyed. I think the whole grim dark esthetic is kinda overly edgy for my taste iunno it just reminds me of the dumb comics I wrote with my friends when I was 13.
Settlers of Catan has a very solid lore!
I am currently making Settlers tiles, cities and towns with terrainbuilding technique, so there's hobby in it as well.
How much should you invest? As much as you want to.
That's pretty much the beauty of these sorts of hobbies.
I like skirmish games more than big army games...mostly for the same reasons as you...so we understand each other ;)

I think that veterans really underestimate how much of a time sink 40k is. There's a lot of work put in before you even know if you like the game, and then you might like the game but not the army you spent hours upon hours painting and assembling.
That's why I'm keen on skirmish games like killteam and warcry as you get to play it quicker and it isn't as much of a time and money sink as the big games.
IMHO the biggest problem is the breakdown of months and months of hobby time and hours of playtime into one mere moment: The Win or The Loss. Just try to enjoy everything your hobby has to offer and not just the process of winning.
I think it's more the length of time you spend losing which matters most. Games with win conditions that end the game feel better to me. Guildball vs. Bloodbowl. If I am having a bad game of Guildball it ends quickly. If I am having a bad game of Bloodbowl it just continues to get worse and the only thing to do is wait for it to end.
I wish GW would have continually printed their Warcry boxes. Those were fun and affordable compared to the rest of the hobby. GW seems to be big on the "limited time product" thing, you don't get it now you'll never get it later at this value.

I spent all last year getting my night goblin, Night lords, and sisters of battle armies together. I really hope I get a chance to try them out this year

I probably spend too much $$$ on my hobbies... Oh, that's not the investment you talking about... okay. Then, I hardly invest enough in my hobbies: in the last 5 years I only have 2 armies relatively painted (out of 6 full armies for AoS and 6 for 40k) and a bunch of books and comics I haven't read yet. I also have notebooks of stories I've written about some of the games I've played and game design ideas...
Investing time and head-space in a hobby... play historicals and spend 1000's of hours reading so many books about the lives and times of your chosen setting.
