  • Charles Dickens wrote Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist in this impressive London home. Join our room by room tour and find out what life was like in Charles Dickens Home.
The Dickens Museum has dressed the Georgian House for Christmas, like some something out of A Christmas Carol. It is a superb!
Dickens lived here for 3 short years and the home was saved from demolition in the 1920's. Since them the Dickens fellowship has lovingly looked after the museum full of his personal belongings, portraits and original manuscripts. The highlight for us was seeing the very desk he wrote much of his later works on, like Great Expectations and A Tale of two Cities and his final unfinished work, The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
If you are a lover of Charles Dickens novels and interested in his life, then this museum is well worth a visit. You can find out full details and booking information at:-

At 14 I was introduced to Dickens and David Copperfield by an English exchange teacher at my high school in Detroit, Michigan, and I became a lifelong reader. Dickens was a keen observer and satirist, though he could be a bit moon-eyed over female pulchritude. It once was my habit to read one of his books every year. He never fails to please, and I can't imagine my library without his canon.

I love Dickens works but I do struggle with reading his novels. The length of sentences that are almost paragraphs is quite off putting. I will endeavour to persevere though, as I have all of his novels. The BBC here in the U.K. have made some wonderful adaptations though and I enjoy several dvds. A fine author, but not a very nice husband!

A big, hearty CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS to the re-booting of the Dickens House as the Charles Dickens Home !!! I´ve been visiting this place since I became a Dickens fan as a 13 year old in 1973 but, a decade ago, its atmosphere had become morbid and mausoleum-like - something which the highly jovial Dickens would have hated. Thank goodness that it is now full of its original charm and warmth as it celebrates what is probably the most happy and magical time of the great writer´s life.

I visited in 2014, and touched Mr. Dickens' desk. I was gratified. During the tour, the guide offered a voucher for a free cruise to anyone who could name another holiday story besides "A Christmas Carol." I said, "The Cricket on the Hearth." He was surprised an American answered, and demurred, "Just kidding." I loved the whole thing, and was suprised that besides us two, there was only an Australian woman and her teenage son. Well worth it - the tour took you to many London streets where Dickens had grown up and worked.

I remember seeing Dickens home when I traveled to London (from New York) in 1983. I began reading his works when I was 14 and never lost my enthusiasm for his phenomenal talent. I felt a tremendous sadness in the room where young Mary Hogarth passed away which I've never forgotten. But all these years later, I am still grateful I had a chance to visit this truly unique place.

I love that they might have had a hedge hog as a means to control unwanted vermin in the PANTRY... That's such a lovely and unexpected bit of Victorian lore that's not GENERALLY known or talked ABOUT.
Loved all things Dickens but that about the Hedgehog is a SPECIAL. UNEXPECTED Treat... THANKS FOR THAT.

In my school, in the USA, Dickens was required reading. Although I was not stupid I was too busy having a good time to really get much out of his work. Shame on me. Luckily I rediscovered him as an adult and was especially taken with A Christmas Carol. Now I voluntarily read it every year.

Thank you so much for taking me inside Charles Dickens house. So homely. My husband and I visited another one of his houses. Think it was Broadstairs. Not as nice as this one. Dr Samuel's house was quite nice too. It may be small compared to surrounding glass, office buildings but it's still magnificent. Need to try and visit Darwin's one day.

    • @MemorySeekers

Hello there, so glad you liked it. We were planning to visit Broadstairs this year but apparently it will remain closed until next year. 😑 Off to see Darwin's house this weekend actually! Video in due course 😃
